Again Too Nice!, 05 Nov 2008
I really love Avril Lavigne. She is a beauty! I had an Avril calendar in 2008, and when I noticed that there had been released a calendar for 2009, I decided to buy it. However, again the pictures are little bit too nice. Only two pictures of May and October fill my passion for Avril. You can see the picture of May in front cover of the calendar. I think there was too many pictures that only show Avril's face. Although she is hot I'd like to see hotter pictures of her. I don't mean that they have to be too hot - just normal calendar pictures. There's much attitude in Avril's music (especially the latest album) and also the live DVD was excellent! I'd like it to see that power more in her calendars. The front cover is a great example of the pictures I'd like to see more.

Logic Pro 8 first timer, 30 Aug 2008
As they say in Dragon's Den, "..let me tell you where I am". My experience - I am new to both Apple and Logic 8, and invested in both as technology was now able to cover my lack of formal music training.
After a months of 'playing' it was clear that the logic Pro 8 manual which comes with the package is well written, but does not offer up any projects or walkthroughs for you. This book does just that.
I thought that I was using maybe 25% of Logic's capabilities starting "raw" and self taught, but having only gone through 3 lessons so far on this book, I am surprised at what I did not know, even on basic inputs.
The DVD is structured with lessons that are logic projects and a few other artifacts to really hold your hand through every keystroke. Only on two occasions was I confused at what was being asked of me, which was partly due to my wireless keyboard not having all the keys that a full one does.
Certainly after lesson 3, you already feel you have made some significant progress and already understand editing audio, basic mixing, song construct and multi takes etc.
I will aim to update this when I am through all 12 lessons, but given this is probably about 16 hours equivalent of classroom quality training, I would not hesitate to recommend to new users like myself. The book forms part of Apple's Pro training programme and is classified 'Beginner/Intermediate'.
its ok kind of book, 06 Aug 2008
I would not go as far as other reviewers saying its a fantastic book because it isnt. its ok kind of book, it covers things superficially , I mean, if you are looking for an in-depth manual sort of book this is not for you (or me). this is more like a tutorial that guides you thru some stages but not thouroghly either. So if your looking to learn everrything from the start dont buy this , just read the manual and try things out , if you dont have the manual then look for something else as this only helps you a bit but not a lot.
Essential, 20 Jul 2008
Open this book before you open up Logic on your Mac. You will not regret it. It is step by step and simply and logically (no pun intended) laid out. If you want to get down to making music as quickly as possible this book allows you to do so, without assuming you have much previous knowledge.
Your Logic Pro 8 bible., 04 May 2008
If you want to get to grips with using Logic Pro 8 than this is the book for you. Right from the word go David Nahmani gets you making music and this hands on approach is used throughout the book. The book is clear and concise from beginning to end. The lessons are thorough without a step missed out and given to you in bite sized pieces so you never feel lost or overwhelmed. The numerous screen shots also act as a further guide to help you along. At the end of every of every chapter is a lesson review, a set of questions and answers, that nicely summarizes the key points of the lesson. I also liked the section on trouble shooting and the inclusion of a glossary of terms and the summary of keyboard shortcuts. This is a book you'll want to keep because once you been through the lessons it will make a valuable reference book to dip into again and again.

Brilliant - a guide that's really useful, 09 Jan 2008
This little book helped me decide to make the switch from my current MP3 player and go for an iPod. It's so clearly written, so full of great advice and tips that it's been better than any user manual could possibly have been.
Written with the usual wit and flair one expects from Rough Guides, this is an absolute must for anyone who is thinking of buying an iPod. For once - the blurb on the cover of a book is actually true. "You need this book". An excellent little guide indeed.

Great book on Ipods, full of tips and tricks for both my player and the Itunes website. A life saver in fact, can't recommend it enough.
way too basic, 03 Jan 2007
This books seems to spend an eternity telling very basic things. Quite often I have wanted further information on something and found that the book deoesn't cover it. Instead it spends most of it's time wasting paper space on the most simple of procedures.
Not good. I will be looking for a more advanced guide.

An Absolute Must!!!, 23 Oct 2007
I read all 290 pages of this little beauty in just 3 days, it was so good I had trouble putting it down, I am sure I will be refering back to the sheer avalanche of information contained therein for many years to come. It is very well constructed and the guys who wrote this book have a great sense of humour, they had me laughing aloud more times than your average simpsons episode!!!
Each main chapter has several extremely concise sub-chapters that give you the collective experience of the authors and every other page is adorned with quotes from the biggest DJ's in the business dispensing their piceless pearls of wisdom. Not one stone is left unturned, as they conspire to educate you in every concievable way, into potentialy becoming the next big thing.
Simply put, if you are thinking of becoming a DJ you need this book.
Awesome, 08 Feb 2007
I told a friend of mine that I had interest in DJing and she bought me this for my birthday.
I found it absolutely brilliant, it tells you how to use the equipment effectively including the differences between certain makes/models, plus the advantages and disadvantages of different types of DJing (Vinyl, CD and Digital) and even goes on to explain how to try and get into the industry itself.
Not only that but it advises you on what equipment to buy and gives a list of places where it is available.
As a beginner I found it very useful and inspiring, it is down to earth and everything is written in a way which allows you to get to grips with what its telling you.
If you want to become a DJ and are not very knowledgable about what it requires then I definitaly recommend this book, even those who have some experience will find something they can use.
Worth every penny.
Best of the lot, 13 Jan 2005
Right. Just bought some decks and don't know what to do with them? This is the book. I was in that position, and worried about a) being patronised (I play a number of instruments quite well), or b) bored to death by a squillion obscure labels for music I don't like (happy euro trance etc.). Having looked about, this was the only DJ book on Amazon with no negative feedback, and it's for a reason; it really is very very good, for anybody at practically any level (unless you're Cash Money or somebody). Tells you literally everything (technique, technical stuff, business, music industry), doesn't talk down to you, doesn't obsess about style. The authors tell you again and again that it's all about the music, so if that's how you're looking at it as well, I can't recommend it highly enough.
How to Dj properly - the Dj bible!, 29 Jun 2004
I would have to agree like other reviewers that this is proabably one of the best, its probably the Dj bible. As expalined it starts from the very basic shape of the whole dj way down from past masters to tips from the pros in the dj world, pete tong, oakenfold, tall paul etc. It is helpful because it is clear and whilst balancing a level of honesty with the fact its not that starightforward to dj and to become a superstar! It punches out all the fills and blips and compacts them into 280pages of enjoyable read of tricks and tips. I fully recommened anyone who feels like messing with some records! (it even has tips on cd mixing too this book really is the bible for the next several years to come)
The Best DJ Book On The Market!, 21 Jun 2004
Not the most decorative cover, but I was desparate to find a book that would get me past basic scratching, and beatmatching. Not only did this book contain what I wanted, but also all the basics you need to make a great remix, or even your own track. It contains in depth, easy to understand descriptions, clear diagrams, pro dj quotes and advice, basicly all that a bedroom dj would ever need! The book is divided up into 4 Large chapters, with an interesting intro, and a few extras. The chapters are The Bedroom, The Dancefloor, The Masterclass, and The Industry. All are extremely helpful for a dj that's just starting out, and those who have been mixing for years! Overall, a great book, funny at points, and a big shout out to the authors Frank Broughton, and Bill Brewster. You're the best!

(it even has tips on cd mixing too this book really is the bible for the next several years to come) The Best DJ Book On The Market!, 21 Jun 2004
Much more than Quick Mastering Tips, 05 Jul 2007
I must say I found this book an excellent read. I'm currently self producing an album of some of my songs and got this book in the hope that I'd get some quick tips to try and do a half decent master of the mixes. What it actually did was make me go back to the mixes and question the decisions I'd made to get there.
The author's technical knowledge is extremely high and has definitely given me a clearer understanding of the scope and limitations of the gear at my disposal. More important though is his insistance on not always using processing as a crutch and encouraging you to LISTEN before and after plugging in the standard fallback eq/compressor. I found it refreshing that he focused on music as an art and insisted that within all the requisite science of audio production you should never lose sight of the musical line of the recording your producing.
In a way this book has been temporarily counter productive for me as rather than giving me quick fixes for the last step in production its set me back a few stages to reflect. Hopefully though this will lead to a better, more transparent final product. I suspect that, as a long serving mastering engineer, this is more than a little of the author's intention. As he states several times a good mix is the key to a great master. I think the truly intended sense of this book's title is, therefore, a more all encompassing Mastering the Art and Science of Audio. A must buy, 14 Dec 2006
If your serious about music and want to really produce some excellent sounds you must buy this book.
Professional or home studio, dance music or band producer this is where to get ahead. One of the few authoritative books about audio, 27 Aug 2004
The world of audio is full of stupid explanations for largely misunderstood problems. People seem to suffer paranormal phenomena with audio, and there are people who claim that a green marker can enhance the sound of a CD! This book is a welcome exception to that. It does a wonderful job describing (as the title states) the art *and* the science of mastering. The explanations of digital audio problems are scientific and rigurous, without a single exception. And the author knows his job indeed; he isn't the typical person obsessed with gear. He deeply understands how the different processors work, and the different issues with them. Following his recommendations, my editions are now much better. Moreover, the author is a member of the very small group of talented technical writers. The book is even fun to read, written in a lively style, and very interesting.
Detailed Mastering Bible, 31 Jan 2004
The degree in which the author masters the audio & digital domains is truly amazing. It goes down to the lowest physical level and lets you understand _why_ things behave as they behave, instead of just giving you a list of what not to do. This, together with invaluable examples from his more than impressive 32 years of experience in the field, makes this book more vital to your work than various pieces of expensive equipment.
So, all in all, 5 out of 5. If you are a sound engineer and you haven't bought this book yet, buy it now (or wait a little - a revision is in the pipeline for 2007!) :-)
The best book on mastering., 10 Jan 2004
If you are thinking of buying a book on the topic of mastering, then this should be it. It contains explanations of the principals and processes involved in mastering along with excellent technical explanations. If you are interested in mastering audio, whether at beginner, intermediate or expert level then you will learn something from this book. It's set out nicely and is interesting throughout. You'll soon be turning good sounding tracks into great sounding ones!

Great, 18 Nov 2008
Wow great pictures of Avril as per usual. I so love avril. She the best. If your an avril fan this is a must. and its a great price Again Too Nice!, 05 Nov 2008
Open this book before you open up Logic on your Mac. You will not regret it. It is step by step and simply and logically (no pun intended) laid out. FAB!!!!, 17 Apr 2008

All becomes clearer, 11 Sep 2008
A great book with very insightful writing. If you have been struggling to get over a learning plateau in home recording this definitely helps. I have been using Logic Pro for 3 years and this book definitely helped. The guest sections in the book make very good reading too and it is not written in too 'techy' a manner.
This is an excellent book., 08 Oct 2007
If you would describe yourself as someone who really wants to improve the actual sound of your music, buy this book. I have been producing dance music for quite a few years, but got to the stage where my ideas seemed to be ok, but my productions just didn't sound like I wanted them to ( I wanted them to sound professional ). This book basically tells you a whole load of tips and tricks about how to get all of your elements to sit nicely in the mix, I
used to have one big mess of a mix, but this book has taught me how to create a tighter , brighter, clearer and cleaner mix presented in an easy to understand text.
I would recommend this book for any level of producer and for any genre, but especially anyone who can't quite get that pro sound, and then
as a follow on , buy 'Mastering audio - Bob Katz ' a not so easy read in places, but worth it . for me these TWO books have made ALL the difference.
Inspirational reading, 13 Sep 2004
This book really has some nice info about the use of compressors, reverbs, delays, tricks for monitoring mixes, and lots more. First it goes through subjects one by one and gives some general info plus a few related quotes from some famous mixing engineers. Although most of these people are professionals and talked about equipment that I will never use the theory was still valuable for me. It's stuff that can easily be adapted to my needs with my PC recording studio using Logic Audio. This book doesn't receive 5 stars mainly because it is a little light for the money. The paragraphs of quotes are repeated in the third part of the book which consists of the interviews in their entirety. Also, the section on surround sound really was of no use to me (or most home recording studio enthusiasts I would think). However, I did find the book a pleasure to read. I am a big reader and was surprised to see how interesting it was to get a little personal insight into some of the mixing techniques and the issues that are taken into consideration. The story about how they got the drum sound for "Billy Jean", for example, was very interesting. So, I am glad I bought this book. I am still looking for more tips and tricks to improve my recording/mixing/production skills but I now have a much better idea of where to start when mixing, what kinds of things to consider, how to use effects more effectively and lots more.
Reader friendly and interesting, 13 Jan 2004
If you're into home recording or are looking to brush up on your mixing skills in the studio, The Mixing Engineer's Handbook contains plenty of practical tips. I would say that this book is aimed at the beginner/intermediate reader and is easy to follow even with only a little knowledge of sound engineering. It never gets too heavy and is even funny at times! The book covers a good range of topics and interviews with mixing engineers which give a good insight into how the pro's create the hits. I've been mixing for years, and I still found this book useful.
Excelent book for begginers to experts - Superb!, 26 Dec 2003
Simply superb. This is the defenitive mixing manual I have been searching for years... It includes comments, trips and tricks from many greatest music enginneer's from all time. This book helped me as an amateur mixing engenieer to improve my mixes by far in less than a week. I recommend it.

(it even has tips on cd mixing too this book really is the bible for the next several years to come) The Best DJ Book On The Market!, 21 Jun 2004
A great book, 25 Sep 2008
This is probably one of the only books that I can recommend to those who are interested in learning about audio engineering, from beginners to experienced studio engineers.
It has everything from the basics, right up to the more advanced topics. Combined with Bob Katz "mastering" book, you will have the perfect learning and reference books for university / college use AND general home reading.
Handbook or guidebook? Just a great book!, 16 Sep 2007
As someone relatively knew to home recording, i got hold of this book and it is a really friendly and interesting read, on all aspect of recording, and the overall concepts.
I coupled it with Home recording for Musicians for Dummies, which has more of the specific information you might be looking for (eq for different instruments, compression settings, etc) and the 2 together have brought my understanding and enjoyment of home recording on in leaps and bounds.
Thoroughly recommended. Great support website too!
Good Overview and Introduction, 20 Apr 2000
This is not so much an actual manual as to how to acheive certain results, more an interesting read of a wide range of topics, ranging from Acoustics and perception of sound to Studio layout and mic-ing techniques. I borrowed this book from my University Library, and decided to buy at as a result. I have found it invaluable as a reference guide for gaining a general understanding of various techniques. I would reccomend it to people who perhaps have a general idea of the subject, and who are looking for something to introduce some of the technical aspects of Sound Recording. However, if you are looking for detailed explanations of anything in particular then this book is probably not the best solution. However, I am very happy with my purchase and often find my self reading it for my own interest rather than as a technical reference. Excellent introduction and reference, but not one for the more experienced professionals.

Great, 18 Nov 2008
Wow great pictures of Avril as per usual. I so love avril. She the best. If your an avril fan this is a must. and its a great price
FAB!!!!, 17 Apr 2008

Brilliant - a guide that's really useful, 09 Jan 2008
This little book helped me decide to make the switch from my current MP3 player and go for an iPod. It's so clearly written, so full of great advice and tips that it's been better than any user manual could possibly have been.
Written with the usual wit and flair one expects from Rough Guides, this is an absolute must for anyone who is thinking of buying an iPod. For once - the blurb on the cover of a book is actually true. "You need this book". An excellent little guide indeed.
Brilliant Guide, 23 Nov 2007
