Excellent potter's book, 15 Nov 2008
Here is a book that will not fail to satisfy. As a potter, I have read many books on the subject and if you only intend to buy one book on the subject, this would be a good one to buy.
It is beautifully presented, packed full of useful information and well illustrated with examples of work from some of the best in their field. It not only looks good, but it comes up with the goods. It is indeed a complete reference, a definitive guide taking you through all the processes from choosing clay to the finished product whether you wish to make pots by hand or throw them on a wheel. I believe beginners and experienced potters alike will find this mine of information of use. Learn how to pinch, coil and slab-build. See how to throw a teapot, how to create large structures and how to use or create moulds. Find out how to furnish a studio and what equipment to buy.
This easy to follow, how-to-guide covers many types of surface decoration techniques that are good to have on hand. The practical information is backed up by design ideas and inspiration. This beautiful and well-thought out book really is my favourite book on pottery. It is very favourably priced too. A wonderful book, 30 Aug 2007
This is a wonderful book for those new to pottery. It presents a wealth of information about different techniques and aspects of ceramics alongside a fantastic selection of work by ceramic artists. My ceramic bible!!, 04 Apr 2006
This book has an incredible amount of information ranging from tools, basic techniques to alternative firing and kilns. This book has been so helpful to me as a student focusing on experimental work and new methods of decorating and gets your imagination going and motivation to create a new piece day in day out. I would recommend this book to new students and professionals alike. It is so good my university tutor looked through it and bought one of her own! Mum's the word., 04 Sep 2004
I bought this as a birthday present for my mother who has gone totally potty over pottery at the moment. She's been attending night classes for a while so I didn't want to get her anything too basic, more something to inspire her own ventures. I think what swung it for me were the photographs. This book is packed with ideas from total beginner to commercial expert, but the photographs are brilliant. They really get the imagination going and she didn't put it down for over a day. A really good gift for anyone who is in to pottery, something that can always be referred to in the future. Marion.

Excellent....great value for money., 08 Jun 2008
I purchased this book about 5 years ago and I still refer to it. It has a vast amount of information about ceramic techniques. Anyone interested in ceramics would benefit from this book. I don't rate books 5 stars unless they are fantastic and this book definately deserves all 5 stars!
Great book!, 25 Oct 2007
It's the best book about ceramics that I bought. It has examples of many different kinds of surfaces. I think it's a book anyone of ceramic's world should have.
What a buy!, 04 Apr 2006
I was in a ceramic book buying mood a while back and I think I bought about 3. I'm interested in textures and new methods of decorating. I thought this book was fantastic in supplying me with plenty of ideas to try and used many as a starting block for new techniques. It covers basic and modern techniques as well as other aspects of ceramics. A must for those studying, interested or working in ceramics!
Great Inspiration!, 22 Feb 2004
Bought this book recently and would recommend it to anyone involved in ceramics. It gives clear, concise, up to date information on lots of ways to texture and decorate your work and great illustrations provide lots of inspiration. Well worth the money, the type of book you can revisit time and time again.
a book for all abilities, 07 Oct 2003
I recently purchased this book, and took it into college to show my colleagues - it covers so many techniques, with clear, colour photos and shows a huge range of contemporary works to demonstrate different effects. I've since bought a further copy from Amazon at the request of the college, and now three other students have asked me to get the book for them next time I order from Amazon!! It's a great book to browse through on the sofa of an evening, and to inspire one to have a go at something new.

Miller's Pottery & Porcelain Marks, 18 Mar 2004
This book was ok. Bit difficult to plough through to find specific items but useful once you managed it. Didn't give much information on the marks though.
An interesing book a must for all pottery collectors, 09 Dec 2001
I am an avid pottery and porcelain collector and have found this book very informative and easy to understand.I use it regularly to validate potters marks and symbols when I visit antiques fairs. It is not a chunky book so it is portable, and the marks are simply catalogued so that you can look them up quickly. An excellent reference book.

Food fit for a "mini" king!!, 30 May 2005
As a beginner, I found this book very easy to use. Clear guide lines are given about mixing polymer clay colours, and how to use the various tools, most of which can be simply adapted from household items. The instructions were very easy to follow and my first attempts were very professional looking! Whether you are "catering" for your dolls house family, or wanting to fill the shelves of your grocery shop, bakery or tearoom, this book will become your bible.

A friend helped me use this book at university and it is a lovely cook book for glazes. very straight forward and easy to use. It is american based I believe, so there is sometimes a need to know the english version of a specific chemical glaze, but on the whole I just walked around the tubs of glaze scooping away. My friend Allen is excellent with ceramic glazes and he recommends it.

A good book to have, 02 May 2008
A friend helped me use this book at university and it is a lovely cook book for glazes. very straight forward and easy to use. It is american based I believe, so there is sometimes a need to know the english version of a specific chemical glaze, but on the whole I just walked around the tubs of glaze scooping away. My friend Allen is excellent with ceramic glazes and he recommends it.
The Stain Glass Garden projects and patterns, 12 Aug 2008
Lovely book lots of interesting and exciting items to make that you can actually find usefull aswell as looking beautiful. Good mix of copper foil and leaded came projects. All in colour with easy to follow step by step instructions. All in all fabulous,
Excellent for modelling, 03 Oct 2008
I agree that the artist is inspiring and brilliant and photos are good for modelling techniques. But what the book does not cover are practical things like hollowing out, firing or casting the head. And the armature he uses is very basic and would not hold that weight of clay for long! Not for beginners.
Helpful for you who sculpture in clay, 17 Mar 2008
This book is a long joyful ride with photographs of an artwork in progress. The author take you along with one female bust from scratch to a ready bust in clay.
Bit by bit you can follow how he model the clay from a slab into a beautiful woman.
I will try to remake this head. The author gave me several new ideas on how to make a face in clay.
Helpful book for the cheramic artist.
Magnificent, 05 Jul 2006
Lucchesi has Italian origins and that pervades his sculptural style as well as his methods. Like the Renaissance artists, he begins by modelling the amazing bone structure in clay, then puts the skin tissue over it, finally creating the delicate surface details. Many beautiful photographs move from one minute step to the next. He worked in the USA and that influence is also betrayed in his unique genre. The effect of the book is total... you feel that you have been taken into the secret essence of the ancient process of clay sculpture. A great book... I hope it never goes out of print because it will speak delight and insight to countless future generations of sculptors.
Just brilliant!, 06 Mar 2004
I bought this book after reading the good reviews and it is everything and more I expected. An absolutely brilliant book. The photos are truly helpful and inspiring and I can't wait to get back to making my next piece.
Best book on clay sculpting, 10 Aug 1999
I bought this book (along with several others) while taking a class in sculpture. I found it to be the most informative and inspiring of any source, including my sculpture teacher. Using a series of close-up, detailed photographs, the book walks the student through the steps of creating a clay head. I followed them and made a good (for me) sculpture of a man's head and later a bust of a woman. I went on to make other clay faces, incorporated into mugs and pots. I don't pretend to be a great sculptor but, thanks to this book, I am able to make recognizable sculptures. The excellent directions include how to control surface texture using water and a brush; it is possible to make clay look like skin. If you are struggling to bring clay to life, this book doesn't just tell you how, it shows you how. Randall Black

Marion.

I thought this book was fantastic in supplying me with plenty of ideas to try and used many as a starting block for new techniques. It covers basic and modern techniques as well as other aspects of ceramics. A must for those studying, interested or working in ceramics!

It's OK but not fantastic and worth 5 stars!, 07 Apr 2008
The quality of the book is not fantastic, it's so thick a hardback copy would be much more suitable. There is a rich diversity of work throughout the book with each piece having one photograph, these are of good quality. Some of the artists are represented intermittantly throughout the book rather than being grouped together, which I founbd a little annoying as I would identify a piece of work I liked then 20 pages later find another piece and then realise it was the same artist. It does not give the reader a great insight into the inspiration and processes used to create the artwork. It is good book if you want to look at lots of pictures of sculptured animals rather than the meaning behind the piece of work.
Inspirational pictures, 17 Mar 2008
This is a wonderful book for those who need some inspiration and some ideas.
Wonderful pictures.
The artwork is funny, extraordinary and sometimes scary. I couldn't belive that people could make such a fantastic work with just a ball of clay.
Clay has no limit that's for sure.
This is a perfect book at the cheramic studio or in a creative home, or just for fun.
Buy it and become creative!!

Colourful and inspirational, 01 Dec 2008
The other reviewers have already extolled the virtues of this beautiful book. Being a novice I was delighted to find that several techniques I tried out of the book turned out acceptably well. One small niggle is that I would have liked to have seen a section on creating complex canes such as flowers, butterflies etc.
Excellent from A-Z, 05 Sep 2007
Well-presented and very comprehensive, I found so much useful information in this book. The photographs are clear, the instructions concise and the gallery work is enough to activate the greatest procrastinator. The author is generous with advice and tips, as well as including a short section on how to use the beads one makes. My only slight quibble would be to say fuller instruction on veneering with feathered patterns would be helpful. But that is minor; I am delighted I bought it. The sections on faux finishes alone are well worth having.
A very creative and inspiring book, 23 Mar 2007
This is a fantastic little book not only because of the wealth of information about polymer clay but also as a creative arts book in its own right! There are so many good photographs, its well laid out with hardly any blank spaces yet full of concise easy to read instructions. There's as much information in this small book as many others, two or three times the size. Well done to the designers and publishers. If you are looking for one book on the subject buy this one. Its a great gift for someone who is at all artistic just to keep in their library.
The best book written about polymer clay jewellery, 07 Mar 2007
I have several books on polymer clay jewellery making. This is the best. The explanations and photos are really good. It will provide hours of enjoyment. You will want to get the clay out asap.
An inspirational guide to making polymer clay beads, 19 Feb 2007
This beautifully presented book gives all the information required to create eye-catching polymer clay jewellery. It is suitable for beginners, as the basics of working with polymer clay are covered, but it also contains many ideas for anyone with experience in this craft medium.
The style of the book allows for a great deal of information to be conveyed in the minimum of space, each page consisting of many small but very clear photos accompanied by pertinent text. Excellent step-by-step instructions show one how to colour, shape and decorate beads using a wide range of methods, and there is a whole chapter devoted to convincing faux techniques.
At the end of the book there are instructions for using the beads to make pieces of jewellery, some excellent tips on design and a gallery section with some inspirational pieces by other polymer clay jewellery makers, complementing the author's own superb work.
I particularly like the way the book allows plenty of scope for one's own ideas and imagination; by combining different elements of the methods covered, truly original and unique pieces of jewellery can be created.

I particularly like the way the book allows plenty of scope for one's own ideas and imagination; by combining different elements of the methods covered, truly original and unique pieces of jewellery can be created.
best of it's kind, 13 Mar 2008
This is an amazing book for making miniature foods, whether you are a beginner or more advanced, it's the best of it's kind. However, could possibly be beaten by Angie's book number 2, to be released this year!

'Making miniture food'by Angie Scarr is one of the best miniture books i've read.Great pictures, step by step guidlines on how to make the food. Absolutly magnificent!!!I want more.
WORKS OF ART THAT ARE ATTAINABLE!, 30 Sep 2001
Angie Scarr succeeds in making every project realistic (to the last detail) and, even better, attainable by the average polymer clay enthusiast. She starts off with a bakery theme (pies, tarts, cakes, salami, pork pies and cheeses) to meat stalls (bacon, chops, poultry, beef sausages) to fruit and veges (from potatoes to cucumbers with transluscent seeds to grapes). The fish stall and maket display items adds a whole new dimension - making up the difficult projects ie salmon and the fun wood veneer crates to show off your works of art. If you're a miniature fan - you have to get this book!
