Burlesque and the Art of the Teese / Fetish and the Art of the Teese , 11 Oct 2008
'Burlesque and the Art of the Teese / Fetish and the Art of the Teese' is a stunning look at the history of both Burlesque and Fetish from the point of view of one of the most famous models and Burlesque dancers of today, Dita Von Teese. It has stunning imagery and is well presented, without being lascivious or in poor taste. This book is class all the way. The various sections focusing on the history of both arts are fascinating, with information you would never have considered and you can tell Dita is both knowledgeable and passionate about her art. If you're a fan of Dita or just interested in Burlesque or Fetish then this is an excellent place to go, and though slightly unorthodox, this would make a wonderful coffee table book.
Stunning and Beautiful, 18 Jan 2008
I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book when it came out and it's only now that I am writing my own review.
I love every page of this book and recently I went to her only british book signing at Waterstones and I could not decide which page I wanted her to sign! (She is even more beautiful and amazing in person!!!) Buy it and then treasure this book forever, if you love Dita, Burlesque, old movie star glamour, lingerie....anything girly!
Stunning photography if a little sparse, 12 Jan 2008
I adore Dita, I'd love to kidnap her and keep her under my bed but alas it is not to be.
I loved that this book came in two parts, the front has dita in softer, artistic glamour poses, and the back more fetish and burlesque glamour. The book is a little basic, with bullet points which does give off a little "dummies guide" kind of feel...but over all its worth the money.
lovely, 01 Nov 2007
A great book, beautiful photographs and a real inspiration. Well worth having. Dita is a real officianado of everything glamourous and i really enjoy looking through this book whenever i need a boost of self belief and confidence to really express myself. vive le nouveux burlesque revolution!
Overpriced , Overrated and the same goes for the book as well, 29 Sep 2007
Overpriced calendar. I love burlesque , which can be witty , alluring , sexy and creative. This is a bunch of pictures with hollow commentary. If you want pictures to gawk at well there you go this book is perfect for you. If you're getting this book because you want to know more about Dita von Teese well it's pretty vacuous so are Dita's live perfomances.

Secrets from a 'shooter', 19 Nov 2008
Not many secrets here, thats just a sales come on. Some usefull beginners info but sadly let down by the appalling print quality, this is a PHOTOGRAPHY book you know, the quality of the images should be much better than this!! May appeal if you want to be a 'shooter' too!
Inspirational and an entertaining read, 18 Nov 2008
Each 2-page spread of this book is divided into three sections: a technical description of how it was done, the photo itself and an entertaining story about it. This approach works extremely well; you get the best of all worlds.
I found it technically informative though not dull, the photos are all very good and sometimes astonishing, and some of the stories are moving or laugh-out-loud funny. They also give an insight into the life of a hard-working travelling photographer. And you get to see a labelled picture of Joe McNally's photographic equipment that he takes around with him.
The language at times was slightly annoying though - after a while you start keeping a mental tally of the number of times a piece of equipment is "that puppy".
Nonetheless, five stars.
Enjoyable read and reference, 06 Nov 2008
Ive read it cover to cover and now read snippets out of it as well as just page through it looking at the images.
Overall it is inspiring, yes it does have some overview instructions, which are not laid out step by step. So don't expect it. If you want a beginners how to do it book there are some great ones around.
Very pleased to have this book in my library, Thank you Joe.
Gems from a Master, 07 Apr 2008
Great read - good anecdotes but definitely not for the beginner looking for technical info.
I couldn't put it down till I'd ploughed through it but I still keep diving in and picking up tips and techniques I can now use in my own (wedding) photography.
The references to how Joe uses the Nikon SB800's as slave units I found particularly useful.
Buy it now - great value for money.
Get inside the photographer's mind..., 10 Mar 2008
... and what a photographer! Joe McNally has a well-deserved reputation as a photographer and is only slightly less well known as a teacher. But for those of us on this side of the pond, attending one of his workshops is, let's face it, financially daunting. No matter. You can buy this book instead!
Here is much photographic wisdom in book form - and (unusually, given the subject matter) a book that can make you laugh out loud and yet teach you at the same time. OK, so some of the shots are ones you'd never get to take yourself as an amateur (hanging out of a helicopter over the Hollywood sign with Michelle Yeoh takes some beating, and as for getting to meet Kermit in the flesh...). But then for others you *can* try and emulate, even if you don't have all of the kit that Joe has available to him. And even if you can't, well, then, as the publisher's own blurb says, this book would look equally good on your coffee table.

Brought this book as a present. What a load of rubbish. Normally love Ray Mears books as they are so informative and really interesting to read. This book is full of pictures with a caption next to each photo telling what is going on in the picture. Really dissapointed and will be returning it and buying another.

One of the best., 26 Oct 2007
I found out about this book when I came across her website. Liking what I saw I decided to get her book from my local library ( a definate pattern here ) and was blown away by what she had created in her book. A few months later I now have this book all to myself :D as a birthday presant.
What a book!!, 02 Oct 2007
This book, unlike many "how to draw" books, in indefinitely awesome. It's combination of careful diagrams, illustrations an humor has helped me to vastly improve my artwork. This book is well worth the petty sum of money it costs and i advise any budding artist like myself to get a copy ASAP. 5/5 and my compliments to J Peffer for her outstanding work.
Couldn't wait to get started!, 03 Jun 2007
I have always been good at copying other peoples dragons, but when it came to creating my own I found it difficult to make them look realistic (as much as you can make something that's fantasy look real).
However, this book is great as it takes you through each stage step by step, allowing you to learn through practice. I am still amazed at how easy it is to create your own realistic dragons, and other mythological creatures, and I now wonder how I ever found it difficult. I guess the old saying is true - "It's easy when you know how!"
I would recommend this book to anyone wishing to get their own fantasy world down on paper. You will want to get the paper and pencils ready before you open the front page!
Amazing - 5 star - A ++++++++ -What else is there to say?, 12 May 2007
On of the best books in the current " how to draw" market. I was given it for a late Christmas present and spent half an hour wiht it and was amazed at the results it produced. It has clear, bright, easy to read pictures and is a great success. I was somewhat cautious when I looked at the frontcover, never have previousley had a "How to draw" book that wielded any good results. To be honest, in all modesty I was astounded at what I could do by the end of the book. Even now, after about three years of having it, I still go back to the book again and again. The only down side is that you are influenced somewhat by the artists designs and I find it difficult to construct fantasy creatures such as dragons, phoenixes and unicorns without having the book in front of me. Well worth the money - a great worthwhile buy.
Mind Blowingly FROOBY!!!!!, 13 Dec 2006
a review by my 14 year old son who recieved this book as a birthday present 6 months ago:
I reckon that was the best drawing book i have ever used! full of nice little tips to encourage you further! if your not a deadly serious artist and a casual scribbler like my instead, its IDEAL! i L O V E it and i fully recommend it to anyone of any ability. It teaches you how to draw Dragons, Asian dragons, Western Dragons, Unicorns, Pegasus, Sea Serpants and even Gargoils! but its mainly on Dragons.Unfortunately, it dosn't contain photos of real dragons or unicorns, lol =D

Rubbish, 22 Nov 2008
Brought this book as a present. What a load of rubbish. Normally love Ray Mears books as they are so informative and really interesting to read. This book is full of pictures with a caption next to each photo telling what is going on in the picture. Really dissapointed and will be returning it and buying another.
WOW, 18 May 2008
This book is truly beautiful. I adore fashion books and this is one of my favourites; whether you are interested in fashion, illustration, art or just want a beautiful coffee table book, this is the one to buy!
Buy this book!, 25 Jun 2007
Whether your studying fashion or you just love to shop this book is an amazing insight into the world of fashion illustration. Each page features a beautiful drawing, information about the author, and the media used (when possible). There are some reading pages throughout out the book highlighting changes in fashion and the influences on fashion illustration. This book is a perfect guide for those studying fashion to find reference and inspiration. Each page is colourful and different from the last. It is definately worth the money and is a great book to have! It would also make a gat gift for anyone with a remote interest in fashion, BUY IT NOW!
Amazing - 5 star - A ++++++++ -What else is there to say?, 12 May 2007
On of the best books in the current " how to draw" market.

WOW! Full on, in your face record of the male penis., 12 Nov 2008
An excellent art book of photography of men and the male penis with some truly jaw dropping pics. Though all the photographs appear to be dated from the 50's to the early 80s it just adds to the theme and design of this compilation of penises. A suberb art/coffee table book - it definitely always becomes a conversation piece.
Wow, 23 May 2008
A beautifully put together book which includes some amazing pictures of very well endowed men. Most of the pictures are from the 1970's and pictures are grouped by photographer/studio. There is some interesting information contained within the text of the book, although this text does not feature heavily with the pictures doing the talking. Some interesting mini-bios of the models are included, written by the photographers. If you are interested in the male body, erotic photography or just want to see some massive you-know-whats this is the book for you. Well worth investing in!

A very attractive coffe table book, full of high quality images. However, in terms of garden design and maintenance it is a little bit specialist for my taste. Overall, this is one for the garden historian rather than the gardener. Btw - a previous review questions why gardens belonging to the National Trust for Scotland (NTS) aren't included in the book. I suspect it's because NTS is an entirely seperate organisation from the National Trust for England, Wales and Northern Ireland, rather than the author not rating gardens north of the border.
Great text and stunning photos, 12 Dec 2005
I found information on plant varieties, garden design and historical facts fascinating. The entry on Fountains Abbey and Studley Royal was particularly poignant for me, as it is probably my favourite National Trust garden (of the ones I've visited), and Stephen Lacey's text added to my enjoyment and memories of a sunny summer's day visit. Despite being mid-winter, it made me want to jump in the car and drive up to North Yorks to revel in the splendour of this garden. This is a book to dip-in and out of before and after visiting National Trust properties. I'm keen for spring and summer to come round again to see these gardens at their best. To be honest, I may even brave the cold winter weather and go and see the winter face of some of my more local NT gardens. The photography is undoubtedly stunning, and does these gardens full justice. More photography and books of this type please, National Trust.
It relies too heavily on the artwork., 02 Nov 2005
It seems that the author relies heavily on the startling photograhy in this book, perhaps he should concentrate his efforts elsewhere, as the text is neither here nor there. I could not tune into this lacklustre offering at all.

Best in class, 27 Jan 2008
If you are looking for a comprehensive and easy to understand book on digital wildlife photography look no further. I have a couple of other books by this author, not only is his photography ahead of the field but he can write too. Whether you are reasonably experienced with the digital workflow or picking up a digital camera for the first time, this book is a mine of information that is easily understood and very accessible.
The chapters on RAW workflow were particularly helpful to me and have been written so they won't go out of date in a hurry. The artistry in the pictures is fantastic and the book is worth buying for those alone.
Excellent, 01 Dec 2006
As a relatively new convert to digital - I switched from film 12 months ago, I have struggled to find a "how to" book that gives the information I need without the jargon and an assumed knowledge that so many authors think you have. I need look no further, this book is quite excellent in explaining concisely and simply what can at times be a confusing and daunting subject, Tipling is an excellent teacher. The author passes on his hard won experiences, not least in the picture captions which are a mine of information, and what about those pictures, simply stunning! The chapters on processing a raw image and photoshop work hit exactly the right chord, giving the basics and explaining just how each tool can be used. In conclusion a beautifully produced book that works both as a manual and collection of sumptuous images.

Amazing - 5 star - A ++++++++ -What else is there to say?, 12 May 2007
On of the best books in the current " how to draw" market.
It teaches you how to draw Dragons, Asian dragons, Western Dragons, Unicorns, Pegasus, Sea Serpants and even Gargoils! but its mainly on Dragons.Unfortunately, it dosn't contain photos of real dragons or unicorns, lol =D WOW!
Looks great, not such great text, 19 Dec 2006
Helpful Book, 13 Apr 2008
This is a good book for those who can't draw with a good selection of positions and ideas.
The best use of this book is to trace the outline of the models in light pencil or scan into your computer and clear away the unsuitable shading and clothing lines in an art program. Then get creative!
With a little bravery you can change the proportions of the figures to fit your or someone elses body form.
The drawings are not the greatest but the book benefits from its simplicity.
Get it used for a bargain!
