14 stories to discover in a guide, 06 Sep 2008
Not just a colourful and imaginative guide to the South Bank, there are 14 hidden stories waiting to be discovered. Take the man walking a dog...well, it WAS a dog; and has Grandma lost Grandpa? And what are those policeman getting up to?
This a book you can pick up over coffee, and come teatime you will still be discovering new things in Tommy's world. Great, and subtle fun.

Genius! Tommy Penton offers us his own unique take on London and the South Bank. Read front to back he follows the path from Tate Britain to Tate Modern, but it can also be read backwards (East to West). Tommy's take on the vista remains true yet in his own style - the excellently written guide at the back of the book helping to identify the buildings further. Even if you think you know the South Bank well Tommy's book will throw new light on it.
Shows how lazy she really is, 29 Jun 2007
After the first few sketches, you feel like you've got deja vu. They're all practically the same. Basic setup, plot device, catchphrase, the end. It's like having to write lines on the blackboard, just the same thing over and over. There are about five different sketches in this book, then they make a minor adjustment every time that character crops up again. What a waste.

I've been a fan of Cathreine Tate since the first series of Wild West, and The Catherine Tate Show is a fave show of mine and I was interested when I saw that the scripts were going to be released in a book.
Well here you are, all the scrips from the sketches from both series 1 and 2 (not the Chrismas Special). It pretty much explains itself, if you are the sort of person who likes to collect companion books to TV shows then this is a good one.
Throughout the book there are photos - both posed and clips from espiosdes of Catherine as the various charcters. Both the well known ones like Lauran and Nan but also lesser known like 'How Many How Much' woman and 'one off' characters, such as Drunken Bride.
Note: This book is 100% scripts so don't expect charatcer profiles and such. It would heve been nice if the book had included such things as an extra but the amount of scipts and pictures (some with quotes) make up for it.
I've started to collect books/scripts of my fave shows and this one happens to be one of my faves - Hardback, well presented throughout.
The book is an excellent companion to the show. If you are looking at its page on the site (and you must be if you are reading this) then I'd asume you are already a Tate fan - or know someone who is. In that case you know exactly what you are getting - so get it.
fantastic resource for kids(AND TEACHERS)!, 04 May 2005
This beautifully-packaged box caught my eye one rainy afternoon at Tate Modern a few months ago. I am a Primary School teacher, and the ideas in this box were exactly what I had been looking for. I have enthused children from 5 to 11 with the work of Mondrian, Hockney, Caulfield, Picasso, Hepworth and more thanks to Art in a Box, and I have many more lessons ahead already planned for me! The children come to recognise the style of most of the artists, and really enjoy the processes Sarah Richardson suggests on the back of each card. The pictures themselves are beautifully reproduced; I have laminated all mine and use them for art and literacy lessons, and they're great with displays. Wonderful!
An excellent book, like a virtual tour of the Tate Modern!, 05 Sep 2001
I bought this book having visited the Tate Modern with a really special friend of mine. Having thoroughly explored the gallery and it's contents, I bought the book just before we left.
On the train home I settled down to browse though the book. It's a very complete book because not only does it talk about the art that the gallery contains... but it also takes you through the rennovation from a power station to a first class art gallery. Therefore it almost feels like you have two books for the price of one!!
I think [...] it is very well priced and excellent value for money.
Although I bought it as a reminder of a special day for me, this book is so well written. It gives you information on the rennovation from a power station to an art gallery, biographies on the artist's whose work is on show, and fabulous photographs of their work. It is an excellent text book for art students as well as people whom are unable, for one reason or another to visit the gallery, but are interested in modern art, as well as 'sentimentals' like me!!
I thoroughly reccommend this book... in fact I have also bought a copy from Amazon.com for that special friend of mine!!
