Burlesque and the Art of the Teese / Fetish and the Art of the Teese , 11 Oct 2008
'Burlesque and the Art of the Teese / Fetish and the Art of the Teese' is a stunning look at the history of both Burlesque and Fetish from the point of view of one of the most famous models and Burlesque dancers of today, Dita Von Teese. It has stunning imagery and is well presented, without being lascivious or in poor taste. This book is class all the way. The various sections focusing on the history of both arts are fascinating, with information you would never have considered and you can tell Dita is both knowledgeable and passionate about her art. If you're a fan of Dita or just interested in Burlesque or Fetish then this is an excellent place to go, and though slightly unorthodox, this would make a wonderful coffee table book.
Stunning and Beautiful, 18 Jan 2008
I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book when it came out and it's only now that I am writing my own review.
I love every page of this book and recently I went to her only british book signing at Waterstones and I could not decide which page I wanted her to sign! (She is even more beautiful and amazing in person!!!) Buy it and then treasure this book forever, if you love Dita, Burlesque, old movie star glamour, lingerie....anything girly!
Stunning photography if a little sparse, 12 Jan 2008
I adore Dita, I'd love to kidnap her and keep her under my bed but alas it is not to be.
I loved that this book came in two parts, the front has dita in softer, artistic glamour poses, and the back more fetish and burlesque glamour. The book is a little basic, with bullet points which does give off a little "dummies guide" kind of feel...but over all its worth the money.
lovely, 01 Nov 2007
A great book, beautiful photographs and a real inspiration. Well worth having. Dita is a real officianado of everything glamourous and i really enjoy looking through this book whenever i need a boost of self belief and confidence to really express myself. vive le nouveux burlesque revolution!
Overpriced , Overrated and the same goes for the book as well, 29 Sep 2007
Overpriced calendar. I love burlesque , which can be witty , alluring , sexy and creative. This is a bunch of pictures with hollow commentary. If you want pictures to gawk at well there you go this book is perfect for you. If you're getting this book because you want to know more about Dita von Teese well it's pretty vacuous so are Dita's live perfomances.

Beautiful, amazing masterpiece, 09 Jun 2008
I brought this for my 12 year daughter who is Wicked's biggest fan. She loved it, the best present I have brought!! I have seen the show and thought it was amazing so had a look myself...couldn't put it down!!!! Intriging, interesting and beautifully written.... an absolute must to any Wicked fan!!!
In fact I have just ordered another one for my daughter's best friends birthday!!

Does not contain the script!, 20 Nov 2007
This book is a must for any avid fan of the show "Wicked".
I originally bought this book because I was told by the theatre staff at the apollo, that the script for the show was in it, after I asked if the script was available for the show... this loses the book a star and a the staff lose a star too... this book DOES NOT contain the script to Wicked at all, it merely has small excerpts from various scenes throughout the show, which from my point of view was a major disappointment.
However, with that said, this book is still fantastic. The whole book shows character and is created to look old and antique, the cover is beautifully crafted to feel soft and has a lovely texture and feel to it. Each page has been printed beautifully and is pleasing to the eye.
The contents of the book take you from it's origional book to it's creation as a stage masterpiece. There are sections about every aspect of the show that you could possibly imagine, including costume and set design, to beautiful pictures of origional cast members.
So, if you just want the script this is not for you, but if you are just crazy about the show go ahead and buy it, you won't be disappointed.
Perfect Accompaniment to a Perfect Show, 09 Sep 2007
I'm pretty sure that if you're looking at this book then it's somehow linked to the highly successful musical. Whether you've seen the show and loved it or maybe you know someone else who loves it I can only recommend that this is a great purchase for anyone who really enjoyed "Wicked - The Musical"
I should point out that I'm a pretty typical British guy. I love my football more than I love my music, films, books, etc so you could hardly label me a "theatre-buff". I do still really enjoy my entertainment (usually American-produced) & I catch any show that takes my fancy but it's usually musicals with very-high production-values that I enjoy most. I have to say that "Wicked" simply blew me away - the music, the perfomances, the sets, the story, everything really.
Quickly after seeing the show I read Gregory McQuire's novel which I'd had my eye on for years but it was "The Grimmerie" that really gave me most pleasure to read. I love Behind-the-Scenes books anyway but this book is sheer class. It's inevitably linked to the original Broadway production so in terms of performers the cast won't be the same ones you'll be watching in theatre's now but everything else is directly related to the show you'll have seen.
Probably the most beautifully-produced book I own, it's 200 pages of superbly insightful text & pictures that takes the reader through the entire process of getting Wicked onto the stage, all bound in a wonderful soft-to-the-touch cover.
The whole design of this book oozes class, from the quality of the paper it's made from to the design of each page & I guess if I had any criticism it's that the number of full page photo's & almost-complete words & music of the entire show do take up a lot of the 200 pages but that's just being greedy and wanting more text.
Overall if you enjoyed the show and would either like a great souvenir or would just love to know more about "Wicked" then I can't recommend The Grimmerie enough
"The Grimmerie" is truly a magic of its own, 17 Jul 2007
Being a huge Wicked fan, I asked my mother to buy me The Grimmerie for my birthday, and I was in no way let down.
The presentation of the book in itself is lush, detailed and in a world of it's own. The thickly padded cover is comfortable to the feel, and the textured pattern on the front cover offers a nice contrast with the smoothness of the rest of the front. Even the writing its very self is printed in a way to seem natural looking on the book, and the aged effect appears very pleasing to the eye.
Inside, the book is full of interesting snippets of information, including information on the background and writing of each song in the show, and there are interviews with the cast members over their decisions on how to portray their characters. The pages are once more made to look old and worn, but the information and pictures on them still manage to look beautiful, vibrant and bring to life the musical in a way not seen before in print.
At close to 200 pages, the book may seem rather short as a complete background to the show, but the pages are packed with so much text, information, and imagery to keep even the least enthusiastic fan of wicked happy. The libretto within may not be a complete libretto (excerpts from key scenes such as The Wicked Witch Of The East or the cornfields scene are missing or condensed) but still give a nice flavour of the shows contents.
It is truly an outstanding book, and one which I will recommend to any fan of the musical, however if you have not seen the show then it is probably more advisable to see the show before looking at the book, as spoilers are contained within.
Wicked Insight, 11 Jun 2007
This book is wonderful, not only is it informative but is a lovely book to have. So much thought has been put into this, the presentation is amazing, and with it's beautifully padded cover makes it a joy to hold.
It is fantastic, as a member of a musical theatre company myself to see the full process and what is involved in getting a show from pen to stage.
I bought this from the theatre when we went to see the show (easily up there as one of my favourites), and I would recommend that you do not delve too deeply into this book if you have not seen the show as it contains LOTS of spoilers.

Truly excellent, both to read and for it's insights, 24 Oct 2008
This is an excellent, concise and insightful book that gave me a whole new view of human interaction. Just that alone has allowed me to see through my own daily interactions with friends and colleagues. The first chapter that discusses status will have you hooked for the remainder of the book. You'll read it twice, in the first week or two I suspect. Well worth your time!
Human interaction masterclass for everyone, not just improvisers, 04 Jun 2007
Keith Johnstone is a visionary in the field of improvisation theatre. His concepts of status hierarchies are ground-breaking. They show that humans, like animals, are at ease with each other when the underlying status hierarchy is understood and undisputed.
However, all kinds of interesting tensions are created when the status hierarchy IS disputed. For actors, this concept from Keith's book is golden:
1) If you want to be seen as a natural performer, you need to know your status in relation to the other humans, and even things around you.
2) If you want to create interesting drama, you and your co-actors need to manipulate your statuses in interesting ways. These dynamic movements and challenges are interesting and funny for the audience.
Keith describes this and much, much more in his fascinating book. The generous use of actual improvisation situations makes the book very hands-on, funny and analytical.
Impro also expands from improvisation acting to such areas as creative writing, teaching and mask and trance work. Even the bits one does not agree with are superbly constructed and offer an insightful view on the sometimes weird and wonderful world of creative minds at work.
The improvisation actors in such shows as "Whose line is it anyway?" or London's Comedy Store borrow many of their techniques from Keith.
This book is one to read, whether you are an actor, spectator or just plain interested in smooth, congruent human interactions. Pure genius.
More than just a book for actors, 12 Sep 2006
I'm an actor but this book is a useful life-guide for anyone who needs a fresh approach. My well-thumbed volume used to accompany me on my travels and also helped me in interviews for regular jobs. It helps you to look at the world as the sublimely absurd place it truly is and helps all who read it to confirm that they are, in fact, not quite as sane as you thought.
Excellent book, recommend it for everyone, 23 Jul 2006
If yo are interested in theatre and creative process, YOU MUST GET IT. Never read anything as interesting by far. Johnstone explains everything clearly and you get amazed when you play out the games he proposes.
Highly recemmended.
Fabulous, 12 Oct 2005
Of all the drama theory books I have read, this was certainly the most enjoyable. I found myself reading it as though it were a fictional storybook, thoroughy enjoying every word. Johnstone completely changes your perspective on imagination and being 'creative' or 'uncreative'. the best bit about it is that half of what he explains you kid of realise you knew all along, but were never aware of it, like 'cencoring' the first idea to ocme into our head. Impro has certainly helped me with my Theatre Studies Degree course! a must have for anyone who finds the imagination fasscinating.

AMAZING, 15 Feb 2005
This is a truly amazing book. I would highly recommend this to anyone who wishes to go beyond the classical approach to theatre and get to grips with the essence of a play and a character. This book is like the actor's Bible and really shows how you can get to truth in your acting in a comprehensive, lesson by lesson approach by one of the greatest acting teachers whose work has been continued to this day, inspiring actors such as the great Marlon Brando, Robert de Niro, Dustin Hoffman etc.
Summed up in one book!, 19 May 2001
Stanislavski's teachings can be quite complex if you are new to the theories within his practices. This book, An Actor Prepares, is both full of interesting dialogue between his classmates and his tutor (referred to as "The Director"). On reading the book, I found myself relating to experiences of my own. He deals with what is essentially the truth of good theatre. I have studied the practices of many of the greats, Brecht, Artaud (Bless Him), and Berkoff, and have found, in my opinion, that Stanislavski is probably the greatest of them all. The book deals with all aspects of preparation for a performer, however deals directly with acting (if you are a performer, you should be able to relate no matter what). If you need a study guide for A-Level or even GCSE (if you want to get the best possible grade), An Actor prepares is the source text for you. ...It can really make a difference between good acting/studying/teaching. After finishing An Actor Prepares recently, I am moving on the purchase the other big names of Stanislavski, 'Building A Character' and 'Creating a Role', well worth the read!!
Marvellous and not just for actors, 17 Nov 2000
Our cinemas and theatres would be places of great delight if actors both amateur and professional would really take Stanislavski's advice to heart. The book is just as relevant to public speakers and indeed ordinary people who are concerned to present themselves convincingly. Both edifying and entertaining. Andrew Crowe

BUY IT>.................... ITS GREAT !!!!!

Best of the Bunch, 06 Nov 2008
Every film, short or feature, begins with the screenplay. In Making Short Films, the writer has managed to condense all the screenwriting 'secrets' and mysticism into a powerful, straightforward guide to telling stories through film. Having started at the beginning, the book takes you step by step through the arts of directing, producing, editing and screening shorts at festivals and on the net. There are useful chapters on casting, locations, careers in film and I particularly enjoyed the History of Short Films, which puts the genre in context as it takes you on a journey from The Lumiere Brothers to YouTube. For new filmmakers, this is an essential guide. For tutors, you really won't need any other course work. Rarely does a book come along that can really change lives. Thurlow's Making Short Films is just such a book.
the only guide you will ever need, 22 Oct 2008
i can't believe my luck, stumbling across this title. it really is "the only guide you will ever need" lots of titles claim this, few deliver. an A to Z of every important, unknown, or plain overlooked piece of info you will need to get your film on the screen.should be in every film school or film studies class
invaluable introduction, 21 Mar 2008
this is an invaluable introduction - not only to short films but the industry itself. it's brimming with excellent advice based on the author's own experiences; and boasts a refreshing economy of style which always makes it interesting. i wish it was available when i was at film school.
A must for all short film makers, 09 Mar 2008
This guide provided me with vital details for making my 2nd short film. Well laid out, easy to read, packed with great tips and useful information. This will be my first point of reference for all future projects.
It's THE manual, 05 Mar 2008
"Making short films" is clear, liveley and to the point. The author's own short films show that he knows the difference between a cut and a cut-away and he sets out the film-maker's craft vividly. The illustrations and presentation are excellent. A must for film-students and there's meat to chew on even for those who already know the business but want to keep up.

invaluable introduction, 21 Mar 2008
this is an invaluable introduction - not only to short films but the industry itself. it's brimming with excellent advice based on the author's own experiences; and boasts a refreshing economy of style which always makes it interesting. i wish it was available when i was at film school.
First rate drama, 29 Oct 2007
For anyone who doesn't know Chekhov, I recommend you get acquainted with his work immediately. His short stories are superb, and his five plays are masterpieces of theatre. It is such a shame that he died when he was only 44 - like Mozart, you really wonder what on earth he would have produced by the time he was 60.
As always with Chekhov, I am amazed at the fact he is able to create tension and high drama from absolutely nothing - boredom, loss of zest for life, inability to move on, hopeless incompetence, arrogance, etc etc. Characters are absolutely pared down to the minimum necessary to dissect a psychological state, atmosphere, general state of affairs etc., and the language is an exercise in economy - it functions only as a vehicle for creating dramatic effect. If the penguin translation is faithful, then there is little, if any, superfluous imagery, and nothing that digresses from the function of each moment of dramatic intensity.
The tone and themes of each play - as with his short stories - are always ambiguous: bittersweet, tragicomic, sad and joyful, generosity and miserliness, adultery vs sterile faithfulness etc. In this lack of commitment to a stable reality Chekhov was well ahead of his time and it is easy to see how his plays have exerted such an influence on the development of the modern play.
five by Chekhov, 31 Mar 2005
I re-read Chekhov - the stories as well as these plays - regularly. These recent translations are as good as, if not better, than any I`ve read, even the superb, natural-sounding ones by Frayn. This book benefits too from a masterly, uncompromising and authoritative introduction by Carson. I find new things in The Seagull, Three Sisters, etc every time I renew my acquaintance with them. The Seagull is a limpid, sad comedy with - as one could say of all Chekhov - a deceptively tough core. Uncle Vanya (his `easiest` play to approach at first?) is one to fall in love with; Three Sisters is a world masterpiece...oh, I could go on about this amazing man. He was a great influence on the precise, humane Raymond Carver, which I think is a testament to both writers. I believe Chekhov to be perhaps the most important writer since Shakespeare. Like the latter, he invariably keeps himself, and his writer`s ego, out of his writing - unlike, say, Shaw. Nothing can beat seeing a good, un-reverent performance of these aching-to-be-acted plays, but this is a fine collection to add to one`s library. Incidentally, I am tired now of finding reviews on Amazon which are talking about books other than the one under review. My predecessor here is reviewing the Frayn versions. Why does this keep happening, usually with translated literature? Get with it!
Perhaps the best English translation of Chekov to date., 14 Feb 2001
Michael Frayn's translastion of Checkov is lively, well presented, and holds on to the comic element of his characters - often lost in the stuffy attitude of the cannon of literature. Uncle Vanya, in this edition is especially good. As you read through the lines of the housekeeper also think Father Ted's Mrs. Doyle. Chekov created this character long before TV was even a concept. Good stuff. By this edition.

BUY IT>.................... ITS GREAT !!!!!
