A must have for Christnas, 03 Feb 2008
I purchased the book at the beginning of December and as a childminder found it brillant, we made lots of the things in there, and a one of our favourites was the Snowmen paperchain which even my 12 and 9 year children really enjoyed designing and colouring. A book for all ages.
The best I have seen, 13 Jul 2007
I bought this last year when the shorter, and therefore cheaper Usbourne christmas Activities was sold out. I am so glad it was as this book is fantastic. It includes most of the other usborne Christmas books as seperate chapters, on Christmas cards, decorations, baking etc. The stickers add a fantastic touch to everything you create and there are LOTS of them. My 5 year old daughter wanted to make everything, and we gave it a good try but did not scratch the surface, needless to say this Christmas we will be trying again!! A fabulous book and fantastic value for money

Pure Christmas Magic, 07 Dec 2006
This is a wonderful christmas however old you are! It is my son's first christmas this year, and I have just bought this to read to him, as he loves having stories read to him. I have both the Snowman and Father Christmas in this format, and the gorgeous pictures taken directly from the film are beautiful, and the words are fantastic, and it is so easy to read. Any child will love having this lovely christmas tale read to them, and I am sure parents will adore reading it to their little ones, watching their faces when they hear about what Father Christmas gets up to on Christmas Eve!
A favourite in my family for years, 14 Nov 2006
An ordinary every day Father Christmas who has an outside loo and says things like "bloomin' Christmas" , bloomin' reindeer", bloomin' cat". Beautifully drawn and the story of Father Christmas is sensitively handled and yet it is very very funny. Our favourite bit is at the end where he sits down and opens his own presents and discards the socks (who doesn't!) given to him by one relative but appreciates the bottle of cognac. "Ah, that's more like it. Good old Fred"!. A lovely down to earth simple story enjoyed by all ages. I used to read it to my children and now I am reading it to my grandchildren.
A wonderul Christmas book to share with a young child, 25 Nov 2001
My young daughters and I loved this book when they were small. The "comic book" format is such fun, and Father Christmas depicted as a very normal sort of guy on an unusual mission is such a treat. The book follows Father Christmas from his awakening on Christams eve morning and follows him through his normal routine of bathroom and pet care and dressing and preparing the reindeer. It goes all the way through his stopping at various homes and grumbling about the weather and sees him safely home and enjoying his own Christmas dinner and gifts. It has almost no words, but thia was a favorite bedtime read aloud book as we talked about what was going on in each picture. I found it droll and amusing as an adult, and my girls loved it.
A great film that's become a christmas tradition, 12 Nov 2000
From the first time i watched this great film on television i loved it, it's a funny twist on father christmas, he's a grumpy old man with a heart of gold. Fun for all ages
An awesome re-telling of a traditional story, 15 Jul 2000
A traditional story, with breath-taking illustrations, it always managed to provoke a real Christmas spirit in me as a child. I still wonder if Father Christmas will get his presents to all the children in time. I can't wait 'till Christmas....!

As a teacher of English as a foreign language (in Portugal), I was a bit disappointed with 'Father Christmas Goes on Holiday'... It is not advisable for storytelling; some drawings are too tiny, as well as the words on the speech bubbles. Besides, I don't think the plot will appeal to young children and the kind of humour that is used is, in my personal opinion, a bit far-fetched... If you're looking for a great Christmas book, with plenty of surprises, flaps, etc., then you'd rather go for 'Dear Santa', by Rod Campbell, which is certainly a better option! A great follow on for his original Father Christmas book, 14 Nov 2005
If you liked the original, you'll like this as well, more of the same, lots of pictures for the little ones to examine, and interesting for them to imagine Father Christmas out of his normal context of snow and sleighs, and in the sunshine instead. These are relatively slim books, but dont let that put you off, there is lots of detail in the pictures and the story that you can bring out with your imagination and the childs. But because of that I'd recommend buying both together if you dont already have the original.
ho ho ho, 13 Dec 2002
Father Christmas Goes on Holdiay is really funny and enjoyable for kids and parents. When I read it to my 5 year old daughter I thought that it might be too sophisticated for her but she loved it, as did my 7 year old son. Raymond Briggs does not 'talk down' to his audience and includes information that many young children would not know about (ie there is some dialogue in French but although my kids don't know any French this did not in any way make the book less enjoyable). We already have Father Christmas by Briggs and we found Father Christmas goes on Holiday just as entertaining and engaging. If you like Raymond Briggs irreverant sense of humour you'll like this book.

Excellent and unique, 30 Mar 2007
This is one of the all time favourite books of our two children currently aged 4 and 6. Whenever it's Christmas or snowing and time for a bedtime story, you just know this will be the one they drag out for you to "read". I say read because there are no words - the story is 100% told in pictures and I think that is the involvement they enjoy as we talk about what is going on in each scene.
A magical story, illustrated in a style that matches the story being conveyed very well, guaranteed to draw you in regardless of your age!
How to traumatize your child!, 23 Jan 2006
This book is wonderful for adults, certainly not a child's choice. You make a friend while your parents are fast asleep (dead?). You invite him into your house, dress him in your father's clothes, he plays around with your parents' things (putting lights on and squishing fairy liquid bottles (so many symbols!!), takes you on a fantastic trip and he finishes up melting! Get prepared for talking about the soul flying away to heaven... or create an alternate ending. My daughter hates this book! I quite like it...
the most classic story to put you in a christmas mood, 07 Feb 2001
superb illustrations and a clasic story are the building bocks of thi superb book. i recomend it to anyone with kids or a limking for cult classics.

There's a kind of hash, 18 Dec 2007
[To the tune of "There's a Kind of Hush (All Over the World)" as recorded by Herman's Hermits and The Carpenters.]
There's a kind of hash, in Lemony's world, that's right
In Lemony's world, you can hear the sound of a latke with lungs
If you know what I mean
Just potato mush, with onions and egg, and fried
There's no better way, than the Hanukah way, with the latke that cried
So read it very carefully
Closely now and you will see what I mean
The latke that screamed
Between the silly bits you'll see
That there's a lot of history
On the Jews, and Hanukah's meaning
Yes there's a kind of hash, in Lemony's world, all right
In Lemony's world, you can learn a lot, from Hanukah lore
Seriously now, this deceptively simple little book effectively illustrates the difference between Hanukah and Christmas for those of us who weren't too sure before (and were afraid to ask).
Through funny exchanges with other objects and some delightful illustrations by Lisa Brown, "Snicket" brings out the significance of Hanukah by comparing the traditions of Christmas with the miraculous defeat of Antiochus IV at the hands of the Maccabees, the subsequent re-dedication of the temple, and the oil that burned for eight days.
The book ends in true dramatic Snicket fashion, with a kind of hush.
Educational, yet entertaining, this is a good, albeit brief, book for everyone.

The most elaborated pop-up book., 09 Aug 2008
A true work of art. I have seen nothing comparable so far. It is incredible.

I can't recommend this book enough. I used to love pop-up books as a child, but this is far better than any I can remember having or seeing. Each page is a beautiful mini masterpiece. My Niece adores it.
The Nutcracker: A Magical Pop-up Adventure, 25 Oct 2007
This is as the description says a magical book. I bought this for my daughter as we are due to go to the Nutcracker ballet and this is my favourite book, as well as my 3 year old daughter - it really is beautiful and I would highly recommend it - very good value for money.
Truly Magical, 13 Jan 2004
I bought this for my daughter for Christmas and it has become her favourite. At 14 months old she is not yet interested in the storyline however she turns the pages (with supervision) back and forth over and over without tiring of it. This book also has lift up flaps so, even though there are only five basic scenes, there is much detail making it worthwile. The best and most magical Christmas themed children's book I've come across so far.

Product Description
Clement C. Moore's beloved poem about Santa's arrival on Christmas Eve has been illustrated by hundreds of artists since its first publication in 1823. Two collectors of antique children's books have selected a variety of these charming pictures from Arthur Rackham, Jessie Willcox Smith, Thomas Nast, and other renowned children's illustrators of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Most of the images are from versions of the poem; a few are from antique postcards or magazines. Source notes for all the illustrations are included. Santa is dressed differently by each artist, but he is always "chubby and plump--a right jolly old elf" who brings joy to all good little girls and boys. This attractive edition of The Night Before Christmas will be enjoyed most by collectors of children's books or lovers of things Victorian. Youngsters who are already familiar with the poem will delight in comparing the different old-fashioned Santas and the children of long ago "nestled all snug in their beds." A charming holiday gift to leave under the tree on Christmas Eve for anyone who believes in the magic of Santa Claus. (Ages 5 to adult) --Marcie Bovetz

A fabulous book and fantastic value for money Pure Christmas Magic, 07 Dec 2006
Fun for all ages An awesome re-telling of a traditional story, 15 Jul 2000
A traditional story, with breath-taking illustrations, it always managed to provoke a real Christmas spirit in me as a child. I still wonder if Father Christmas will get his presents to all the children in time. I can't wait 'till Christmas....! Not the best option..., 16 Feb 2008

Whenever it's Christmas or snowing and time for a bedtime story, you just know this will be the one they drag out for you to "read". For as far back as I can remember this book was read to us on Christmas eve, I went to bed with images of the book swimming in my head, even now thinking about the story brings a happy tear to my eye as to me it embodies all the innocence and excitement of Christmas when I was a child. I still have the copy of the book with my name written proudly inside although it is a little battered but I take it out every Christmas eve and read it to myself. I have just purchased a new one so when I have children they to can enjoy this Christmas tradition and wonderful story with magical illustrations.
Hooray for the Christmas Corgi!, 08 Dec 2005
Tasha Tudor's gentle illustrations breathe new life and fresh fun into this delightful, timeless rhymed classic. The children, adults and the pets alike participate in the joy of Christmas; the corgi the children dance with is especially delightful. The little corgi has an almost knowing expression in her eyes; she appears to be caught up into the wonder of the holiday season. The corgi, with her playful demeanor is the most appealing character. This timeless classic will be read with delight time and again. The holiday spirit is something to be shared year-round, and this delightful presentation of the classic will certainly be welcomed.

I read this book with my eight-year-old daughter and we were both delighted. She'd plead with me to read another chapter, then another, and I found it hard to resist! There was real substance in the story, and it was told with imagination and wisdom that feeds the mind and heart. A superb children's book I would recommend to anyone.

If you can't read, the pictures make you understand nearly everything there is to know in the book. The pictures are so realistic and magical at the same time. My dad read me this book and I didn't want him to stop reading. The horse speaks his own kind of language in a way we can't do.

The most elaborated pop-up book., 09 Aug 2008
A true work of art. I have seen nothing comparable so far. It is incredible.
Stunning, 16 Jul 2008

Christmas wouldn't be the same without this book , 01 Nov 2007
This Book has given me wonderful childhood memories, 22 Jan 2005
Christmas Eve was always celebrated the same way in our house when we were children, we'd put on our pyjama's and snuggle down in Mum and Dad's bed and then Mum would read us 'The Night Before Christmas' with illustrations by D. Gorsline, (the best illustrated version by far). Clement Moores words are captivating and easy to read along with (especially the reindeer's names!) and the pictures are second to none. Even now my Mother reminds us of how we would shout 'Read it again!!!' after the 2nd or 3rd time she had read it to us. Gorslines' illustrations of Father Christmas are wonderful, just as you would imagine him. If you are looking for a book that your children will treasure and look back on with such fond memories in years to come, then this is it!
Imaginative, wise, enchanting, 02 Sep 2008
I read this book with my eight-year-old daughter and we were both delighted. She'd plead with me to read another chapter, then another, and I found it hard to resist! There was real substance in the story, and it was told with imagination and wisdom that feeds the mind and heart. A superb children's book I would recommend to anyone.
the best book for people who like animals, 19 Nov 2000
If you can't read, the pictures make you understand nearly everything there is to know in the book. The pictures are so realistic and magical at the same time. My dad read me this book and I didn't want him to stop reading. The horse speaks his own kind of language in a way we can't do.
Basic - more for kids, 05 Nov 2004
This is a simple and fun christmas cookbook, really more to do with the kids helping, than on your own, although I did manage to add a few twists of my own to make it slightly more adult - like adding a splash of white or dark rum to the truffles, mmm delicious and all the recipes are incredibly simple with only the barest hint of actual cooking involved.
16 Great Christmas recipes and decoration ideas for children, 06 Oct 2001
Another superbly illustrated childrens book from Usborne. Coconut mice, peppermint creams, shining star biscuits and wrapping ideas. All easy to achieve and with fairly basic ingredients and material. Each page has both photographs and diagrams of 'how to'. Great for anyone working with children.

Great Value, 23 Dec 2006
A lovely edition and an ideal picture flat format for the little ones to enjoy.
A few words on each page are highlighted in red and green ink the rest is in black. For example on the first page the highlighted words are Twas - Mouse - Saint Nicholas.
The "comic book" format is such fun, and Father Christmas depicted as a very normal sort | | |
