Good buy, 28 Nov 2008
I bought this for my husband for his birthday. I would recommend other mums do the same because swimming has become his and my daughters 'thing' and they go every Sunday morning. Its lovely that they spend this time together and she is really confident in the water. Its even lovelier that I get a lie in! Ok he takes 4 towels for the two of them and never combs her hair afterwards, but I can live with that!

Open Water Swimming, 19 Jan 2008
When I first read the beook, I thought it would teach you to swim in the Open Water, but it also prepares your mind. If you want to swim in the Open Water, I would recommend this book.
Good content, erratic organization, 20 Oct 1998
Highly recommended, but be prepared to search a bit for some things. Clearly the product of someone who is predominantly right-brained.

Only way to learn Swimming Dragon if you havn't a teacher., 04 Dec 2001
Swimming Dragon is an old Taoist exercise, both I and the many people I have shared it with have found great health benefits. To anyone with some simple understanding of things like Chi Kung and traditional Chinese Medicine and lots of perseverence, this book provides enough information to master the exercise. As this is apparently the only current source in print, it is a must to anyone interested in this Taoist art.

From novice to water baby, 07 Aug 2007
This is an old book (1993) and, apparently, some of the technique teachings are not the most current, but this fantastic book is ideal for people who are not blessed with the water baby gene. It takes you from afraid-to-put-your-face-in-the-water to beautifully balanced butterfly.
The five basic strokes are broken down and taught through a series of exercises and drills and there are progressive fitness swimming workouts for every level. Also very cool, it teaches you those cool turns you see on the TV when you watch the pros.
I learned breast stroke as a kid but that was it. Taught myself crawl as an adult, rather badly, I might add. After doing one of her stroke development exercises at my local pool, I knocked 4 strokes off my lap time, and completed my lengths in 3 fewer strokes than another swimmer I was watching who was obviously stronger and more experienced than me. It's all in the technique.
Awesome book, easy to follow and understand., 17 Nov 1998
This is an excellent book for those who are self-teachers.It is practical and down to earth. I heartily recommend this manual.
something for everyone & lots for the beginner., 05 Jan 1997
the book cover features a quote noting Jane Katz as te Jane Fonda of swimming. probably true. heavily involved in the sport, she brings a very insightful view to the sport from all levels of experience. Specific exercises (w/illus.), explanations, precautions, 25 Sep 1998
This book is excellently organized! Instructions are clear. Drawings aid understanding. Verbal description is followed by benefits of each exercise as well as precautions. Students AND instructors will appreciate the manner of teaching. Exercises are divided into beginning, intermediate, and advanced categories. Author not only tells WHAT to do, she also tells WHY. Third part of book provides specific programs for common injuries, listed by body part: e.g. lower leg-ankle-foot, knee, thigh-pelvis-hip, trunk & spine, trunk & shoulder, elbow & wrist. In addition, there is a chapter for special populations: Rheumatoid Arthritis, Parkinson's Disease, Fibromyalgia, & Multiple Sclerosis. This is a book one could refer to time after time, for greater understanding and expertise!

Not bad at all, 11 Jul 2007
Funny and also quite re-assuring, the only thing that really lets this down is that it's by an American author, so as soon as the book refers to doctors or hospitals, it results in many pointless paragraphs from the European perspective. However, it's nice to hear as a father to be that all the stuff you're freaking out about is going to be fine and that all your worries (yes, even the ones you dare not speak of about) are reasonable - but everything's going to be fine. That's all the book sets out to do and that's what it achieves. Hardly earth shattering, but a good 15 minute read, nonetheless.
And, Ian Davis (author) one star immediately removed for having your daughter's ears pierced at three months. You muppet.
Short & amusing guide to pregnancy from the male perspective, 11 Jun 2001
This is a quick read guaranteeing a good number of giggles on the way, but also supplying a lot of useful information. It is aimed at the US market, so gives advice on a number of issues not relevant to the UK. However, the general description of the highs and lows of pregnancy ensures that it remains relevant for all first time fathers-to-be.

Should be used for reference only, 22 Jul 1999
Warning! This book should be used for reference only. If you have absolutely no understanding of how to care for a swimming pool you will benefit little from reading this book. It should be used as a reference manual only; something that you can refer to from time-to-time if need be. It is not nearly as comprehensive at it claims to be. Instead, it devotes small paragraphs to subjects that really need to be discussed in more detail in order for the user to gain a complete understanding of the subject. If you are already a Certified Pool and Spa Operator the manual you have received will provide you with more information than this book. If you have been in the business for a number of years you will not benefit from using this book. If you are a residential pool owner you will find it hard to understand a lot of the terminology in the book and you will receive very little benefit. Finally, if you are responsible for a public swimming pool my advice to you is to receive formal training in the form of the C.P.O. Course offered by NSPI. Also, Tom Griffiths has not included anything new in this book that hasn't already been said but, reading this book, you get the idea that he fancies himself as some great authority on the subject. There is nothing special about this book. My advice is save your money and by a Leslie's Maintenance Manual instead.
Comprehensive, very good information on large public pools, 01 Jan 1999
Very comprehensive and researched. Excellent resource for those responsible for public pools. Other books may be more appropriate for residental pool owners.

Disappointing, 03 Jul 2007
I purchased this title ahead of other similar products as not only does it feature "7500 of your favourite food counts" but also "their exercise equivalents for walking, running, biking, swimming, yoga, and dance". Great! I thought, as I am currently on a body building programme and believed that this book would it would be a prudent investment allowing me to pick up some more weightloss pointers. How wrong I was. For a start, the paper quality of the book isn't very good - it's like a newspaper really and the lack of gloss and absence of pictures (whilst not strictly necessary) make it look like rather an amateurish effort. Secondly, this is an American book, hence, all measurements are imperial (lbs, oz etc.), not metric (g, kg etc.). In addition, the detailed lists of Fast Food products relate largely to US only outlets i.e. Taco Bell, Wendy's etc - no use to me.
Overall, I invested in this book not only to find out how many calories were in everyday meals to help my diet plans but also to guide my training as to how many minutes my work out should last, given my calorie intake. As it is, this book was of little or no help to me personally. It may be beneficial to some, but I am sure that there are better presented and certainly more accessible books in this price range.
