The last temperate rainforest forest, 21 Sep 2004
This is a great book for nature lovers in general, and an absolute must for anyone thinking of travelling to the northern British Columbian coast of Canada. I had the good fortune to have this wonderful book as a companion on a journey there this summer and it really is a stunning and inspirational piece of work. The photos clearly took many years and thousands of miles of hard slog to capture and are truly unique. The MacAllister's have superbly distilled the essence of this incredible coastal ecosystem - the lush evergreen forest, the salmon runs, the seals, the bald eagles and the towering fiords and soaring peaks -- into a brilliant series of images. The pictures of wolves and bears - grizzly, black and the legendary white Spirit Bear - are truly outstanding. It's all accompanied by some expert and very readable commentary, spiced up with some very human moments from the authors' travels in the region. Overall it's an excellent book which you will probably return to time and time again to enjoy. It's also likely that some proceeds from it will go to support the MacAllister's efforts to protect this delicate environment from the current and very real threats of logging, hunting and industrial exploitation. So if you buy it, you'll be doing a bit of good into the bargain.

Excellent, indepth guide for use in the field., 22 Nov 2001
This is a really great field guide to neotropical mammals. It leaves virtually no one out and has easily recognisable, colour diagrams of all the species. The notes are thorough and very easy to use with distribution maps, behaviour, common names and further essential information for every entry. Detail for some species is low, but this reflects gaps in current knowledge. Overall I can't fault it!
It's a very practical and well illustrated fieldguide, 12 Nov 1998
It's the most usefull book I own related with the mammalfauna proyects ( inventories, education, management ) we are doing in Central and Western Colombia. Every aspect of the text and illustrations has proven to be very usefull and practical. The taxonomical descriptions are generaly good enough to clasify the bigger species in the field, and the habit and habitat descriptions coincide mostly with our own experiences. The distributionmaps included in the text are also very usefull. The illustrations are sometime a little small, but have proven to be easily recognized by the local habitants, what is extremely usefull during quick inventaries. The relation price-quality is outstanding
wonderful, 24 Sep 1998

A haunting, unforgettable and most unusual love story, 26 Jan 2008
I first read this book around forty-five years ago, and I still have that old paperback copy, as it's one book I cannot give away. I can still close my eyes and remember the atmosphere it evoked when I read it all those years ago. It's truly unique and unforgettable; why no one else seems to know about this book is a very baffling question, as it's a masterpiece.
This book really took me by surprise!, 05 Sep 1999
If someone were to describe the entire feeling that explodes from this book, it would take an entire century. The emotions of the characters were undescribeable. They just poured right off the page. Not all love stories have page after page of adrenaline pumping literature. As the main character chases after his secret admirer, she leads him further and further into her invisible trap of love. Then the secret begins to unfold.
A touching love story., 19 Oct 1997
I think the story was beautifully written. It is unique in its perspective. So few romances are written from a man's point of view. I was utterly engrossed in the story and i have read it many times. It didn't get a 10 because of the ending. It was really good, but.. well... I don't want to give it away. Let's just say it must be a guy thing. I do encourage any fans of romance and fantasy to read it. It is absolutely wonderful.

I have been looking for an English-language collection of tales from the Amazon for some time. I was delighted when I found this listed.HOWEVER it is not primarily a collection of folktales. It is, rather, an anthropological study of the importance of folktale(or myth) in the lives of various indigenous peoples living in the Amazonia region of Brazil. As such, it is interesting. Nigel Smith has spent many years in this area, observing the day-to-day lives of the inhabitants and interviewing them. His concerns were originally of a zoological and botanical nature-which animals were of primary importance ? which plants were most prized ? etc. Gradually, his interest shifted to the BELIEFS of the people he interviewed. He discovered a world in which spirits, ghosts and monsters, both malevolent and benign, are still very much alive. He details some of them in this book. The book also contains black-and-white photographs, and a chart which gives the indigenous and zoological names and English-language translation(if there is one) of some of the creatures, "real" and "imaginary", that share the peasants' world. As I said, interesting. But it is not a collection of stories.
