A must own book, 27 Nov 2007
I feel if everyone who owns or works with sheep only ever buys one book this is the one to get. You may think it is pricy but believe me it is invaluable. Fantastic to help you diagnose problems and help you understand how to dael with them. Set out in an easy to use manner. Covers all the problems from lambing right through the sheeps life. Also includes a practical managment section. Make sure you own this book. All a flockmaster could want in one book., 29 Apr 2000
D Henderson has perfected the balance between practical aspects and science to create a managerial guide and reference volume in one book. Seriously sheepish people will benefit from these pages; whether shepherd, farmer, or student as just about everything is covered - in a way that's interesting and understandable, yet informative and in enough depth to get to the root of the problem. Cure yes, but also prevention! I'd had my eye (from a distance) on this book for a long while, I now regret not acquiring it sooner.
A "must have" book for anyone who keeps sheep, 21 Aug 1999
The bible for everyone who keeps sheep from smallholders to large scale farmers. David Henderson is a practising vet in the UK but with experience in the US as well. The book reflects his expertise, and sometimes clashes with traditional farming practice, usually explaining why. The book is well illustrated, with mainly black and white photographs, as well as illustrations where appropriate. I have used the book for seven years and never found a problem that couldn't be diagnosed. When professional help is required is addressed well, but details are usually provided for those that are more confident and want to have ago themselves. The book isn't at all patronising towards the general farmer. Buy it now, have a browse and then keep it handy for when things go wrong.

This book contains illustrations that are clear and relatively simple to understand. I do not know of a better book to have to help learn anatomy if you are a student, or to add scientific accuracy if you are in the dog show world. The zooarchaeologists could do themselves a bit of good too, if they looked at this book.

British Poultry Standards, 18 Nov 2003
A great and informative book that is much needed by the novice or the experienced poultry breeder or keeper. With over 200 photos enables the prospective breeder, keeper or buyer to identify the breed and the standards that that his livestock should be up to enabling them to make good judgement on buying, selling or just looking at. This is a book that is the definative answer to all your poultry breed questions and one that you can not really do without.
A must for anyone who in interested in keeping rare breeds., 15 Aug 2001
The difinitive work,a must for anyone who is intending to keep and show poultry,as well as an interesting reference work the 200 + colour plates show the breeds in all their glory. As a new entrant to the poultry world I have been searching for the ultimate book that would guide me to select a breed (or Breeds)that would best suit the conditions I have on offer on Dartmoor. It has helped me establish the basis on which to breed the most suitable birds, hopefully on a commercial basis.I can only reiterate it is an absolute must for the poultry keeper. Also for those intending to show their birds the guide to British standards is invaluable in trying to achieve the level of standard required to get the top bird ribbon.

Excellent. Easy to understand covering many ailments., 07 Sep 2001
This is my first book on homeopathy for dogs, and it is comprehensive, easy to understand and very informative. It covers many ailments, common and rare, and also introduces alternatives for flea treatment, boosters and allergies. There are full listing of all homeopathic drugs, including the origins and usages. It has become my dog owners bible, and hopefully will cut down visits to the vets and expensive vet bills. Well worth investing in a copy, natural solutions have been around for so many years, they should be used more often.

Not useful for first time raw feeders, 16 Jul 2007
This book is interesting and well written but doesn't provide enough of a guide to starting out raw feeding. Tom Lonsdale's Works Wonders book is better, this one explains the theory but I didn't find it practical enough to be worth the money and returned it.

The Lindsay series are essential for anyone serious about understanding dog behaviour and training. However he does have a rather academic style of writing, and this is not an accessible or light read - more a reference book for courses.

The Lindsay series are essential for anyone serious about understanding dog behaviour and training. However he does have a rather academic style of writing, and this is not an accessible or light read - more a reference book for courses.
Good reference and teaching manual, 30 Jun 2001
The new edition of this book is more comprehensive than the last edition - more photos and the section on haematology finishes it off nicely. If you approach this as a pick and point guide to cytology, you'll not only be disappointed but you'll get it wrong. If you take the time to sit and actually read it it is an incredibly helpful guide. I have other cytology books, and whilst I don't think this one is the ultimate, it comes near the top. It sits on my lab bench and is opened most every day (either by me or my lab techs). Indispensible!

Illustrations of a very high standard, 10 Apr 2002
This book contains illustrations that are clear and relatively simple to understand. I do not know of a better book to have to help learn anatomy if you are a student, or to add scientific accuracy if you are in the dog show world. The zooarchaeologists could do themselves a bit of good too, if they looked at this book.
Excellent Reference for Small Animal Medicine, 23 Jul 1999
Every small animal hospital in North America should have this book on their bookshelf. Medical topics are presented in a complete yet concise format - this is the perfect quick reference tool for today's busy veterinarian!
A must have for veterinary students, 17 Jul 1999
No matter how many books you already own, this one is essential. Especially for those students headed into senior clinics, this book makes diagnosis and SOAP writing about a million times easier. A great reference that gives answers in just a few minutes and helps avoid those embarrassing long silences when asked to comment on a case by your instructor.

Plenty of clear pictures and radiographs, 20 May 2002
This book is good for students as it contains many clear, colour pictures of dissections as well as radiographs and sections focusing on the osteology of the dog and cat. However I feel the book would have been better had it included a text description of what important features are shown in the pictures, and line diagrams may also have been useful. Altogether a valuable book for remembering what you should be seeing inside the dog and cat.
Clear and consise pictures, Easy to read., 15 Dec 2000
Covers the anatomy of the dog and cat in easy to understand photographs. Along with the radiographs and echocardiograms it makes the book an excellent reference for use in the practice as well as for students.

sticking with it!, 22 Aug 2007
I am a rabbit owner (of 10!) rather than a vet and recently bought this book to try and help me understand the various drugs/treatments that the vet gives my rabbits when theyhave problems. Despite its obviously academic approach and technical landguage it has already helped me understand more about how myxi jabs work, and the various impacts on the rabbit of E. cunniculi. For the dedicated rabbit owner this book is extremely enlightening - and one can always 'google' thewords you don't understand first time round. I would recommend this and Rabbitlopedia as my two must haves for the person who has a real involvement in rabbits, whether that be a vet, vet nurse, rescue centre or particularly involved owner. The description of the gut alone was worth it!!
Not just for vets!, 24 Mar 2006
This book is suitable for rabbit owners who are interested in the health of their pet and want to learn more. Worth every penny, as everything and anything about rabbits is included in this book. If its not in here, I wouldn't believe it.
Not just for vets!, 10 Jan 2006
Frances Harcourt-Brown is a leading authority on rabbit medicine/care and this is reflected in the Textbook Of Rabbit Medicine. Covering topics from diet and husbandry through to anaesthesia and analgesia, this is not just a valuable tool for vets but also for the scientifically-minded owner. This book covers a wide range of subjects in more detail than can be found in a number of other books on the same subject making it great value for money. Having said that, surgical procedures are only touched upon and I would not recommend this book for those wanting to specialise in this area. All in all a fantastic book - a long-awaited step in the right direction for rabbit medicine!
best rabbitbook, 18 Nov 2004
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about rabbit medicine. I have also read the BSAVA manual of rabbit medicine and found Harcourts book giving far more value for the money.
Superb and comprehensive guide to rabbit medicine, 08 Jun 2004
Frances Harcourt-Brown is a highly respected vet with many years' experience in general practice, and is well known as an expert on rabbits, having published various influential papers on rabbit disease. As a small animal vet who sees more rabbits than most, I have found this book absolutely invaluable. It comprehensively covers all areas of rabbit medicine, and deals both with well-understood and simple conditions, and with those poorly understood at the time of publication (such as Encephalitozoon cuniculi). The illustrations are clear and helpful. Although the book is clearly written, it is certainly intended for vets rather than pet owners, and I would think it would provide far more detail than the average pet owner would require. Another consideration is that Mrs Harcourt-Brown is British; for me, that's an advantage, but I don't know how many drugs, etc that she mentions would be readily available in other countries. Also, this is a book of medicine, and as such doesn't cover surgical techniques in any detail. However, I would highly recommend this book to any vet who seriously wants to consolidate their knowledge of rabbit medicine. All veterinary textbooks are expensive, but in my opinion this one more than justifies its cost. I can't think of a case I've treated where it didn't provide me with at least some helpful information.

Excellent aid to learning anatomy, 16 Jan 2002
This book is really helping me to get to grips with veterinary anatomy. It is especially useful during dissection classes to help identify structures, and excellent during revision as well. Each clear photo is accompianied by a colour line diagram which really helps you understand where everything is, and is an advantage over Boyd 'Clinical Anatomy of the Dog and Cat', this book is well worth the extra expense. Together with a good textbook such as Dyce 'Veterinary Anatomy' this provides a complete reference for vet students.
