Superb, 01 Nov 2003
A superb surgical text. Unusually for surgical textbooks, it is ideal for both new graduate and experienced surgeon. In many ways this is a "complete" textbook - it includes detailed information on not only the diagnosis and surgical correction of every condition likely to be encountered in general practice, but also the pathophysiology, medical management and post-op consideration/complications. the diagrams are superb (and easy to follow especially if, like me, you like to have the book open at the relevant page during a particularly complicated procedure!) Having bought many many expensive textbooks during my years as a student and 10 years in practice this is the first one I would gladly have paid double for. I have referred to it countless times and have yet to find it lacking in any way. It will take you from your first bitch spey to your surgery certificate and beyond - buy it!
Excellent book! Highly recommended!, 11 Apr 2000
This book is really a treasure for everyone's library: whether you are a veterinarian or a student, this book is a must! It is easy to read, yet detailed, with lots of illustrations and sketches. Contains detailed clinical procedures. Very user friendly-Highly recommended!

A good basic guide, 28 Dec 2007
This is a good basic guide for anyone who is new to veterinary nursing or and wants to be a bit more informed during operations. It covers the basic instruments that you would probably see in a smaller veterinary practice but may not cover all the specialist ones that bigger hospitals may use. I found it a valuable book in my collection without it I would still be clueless, and probably still looking for those forceps!!
Not the best reference guide for serious students, 17 Aug 2003
This book is ok for general practice use, not for serious students. It would have been better if there were pictures instead of drawings of the instuments detailed. This book only scratches the surface of the surgical instuments used in Veterinary Practice.
A bit pricy for the basic content of the book., 13 Aug 2003
Although this book is helpful, it's a bit limited. There are hundreds of different instruments used in Veterinary Practice and i've found that this book only scratches the surface. This book would probably benefit pre-VN students or assistants new to the Veterinary Practice the most. It would of been more helpful if there were pictures of the instruments instead of drawings.
A useful addition to the veterinary practice library, 14 Oct 2001
This book is useful for pre-veterinary nurses, trainee nurses and for new members of staff at a practice. Veterinary instruments have complicated names because they are often named after the people who "invented" them. If only all these people had had easy names then the instruments would be easier to spell and remember! This book logically groups the instruments together and illustrates the main differences between them. I would have liked to have seen photographs as well as the diagrams, because this would make the instruments easier to recognise in the flesh. But this is a minor point, and I would recommend the book even if it is just used to check the spellings of the strange names.

I am a rabbit owner (of 10!) rather than a vet and recently bought this book to try and help me understand the various drugs/treatments that the vet gives my rabbits when theyhave problems. Despite its obviously academic approach and technical landguage it has already helped me understand more about how myxi jabs work, and the various impacts on the rabbit of E. cunniculi. For the dedicated rabbit owner this book is extremely enlightening - and one can always 'google' thewords you don't understand first time round. I would recommend this and Rabbitlopedia as my two must haves for the person who has a real involvement in rabbits, whether that be a vet, vet nurse, rescue centre or particularly involved owner. The description of the gut alone was worth it!! Not just for vets!, 24 Mar 2006
This book is suitable for rabbit owners who are interested in the health of their pet and want to learn more. Worth every penny, as everything and anything about rabbits is included in this book. If its not in here, I wouldn't believe it. Not just for vets!, 10 Jan 2006
Frances Harcourt-Brown is a leading authority on rabbit medicine/care and this is reflected in the Textbook Of Rabbit Medicine. Covering topics from diet and husbandry through to anaesthesia and analgesia, this is not just a valuable tool for vets but also for the scientifically-minded owner. This book covers a wide range of subjects in more detail than can be found in a number of other books on the same subject making it great value for money. Having said that, surgical procedures are only touched upon and I would not recommend this book for those wanting to specialise in this area. All in all a fantastic book - a long-awaited step in the right direction for rabbit medicine!
best rabbitbook, 18 Nov 2004
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn more about rabbit medicine. I have also read the BSAVA manual of rabbit medicine and found Harcourts book giving far more value for the money.
Superb and comprehensive guide to rabbit medicine, 08 Jun 2004
Frances Harcourt-Brown is a highly respected vet with many years' experience in general practice, and is well known as an expert on rabbits, having published various influential papers on rabbit disease. As a small animal vet who sees more rabbits than most, I have found this book absolutely invaluable. It comprehensively covers all areas of rabbit medicine, and deals both with well-understood and simple conditions, and with those poorly understood at the time of publication (such as Encephalitozoon cuniculi). The illustrations are clear and helpful. Although the book is clearly written, it is certainly intended for vets rather than pet owners, and I would think it would provide far more detail than the average pet owner would require. Another consideration is that Mrs Harcourt-Brown is British; for me, that's an advantage, but I don't know how many drugs, etc that she mentions would be readily available in other countries. Also, this is a book of medicine, and as such doesn't cover surgical techniques in any detail. However, I would highly recommend this book to any vet who seriously wants to consolidate their knowledge of rabbit medicine. All veterinary textbooks are expensive, but in my opinion this one more than justifies its cost. I can't think of a case I've treated where it didn't provide me with at least some helpful information.

Ettinger and Feldman - the best in its field, 11 Aug 2002
Summary: An excellent, informative, easy-to-read, well indexed two volume text. I was delighted to receive my two volume text and can honestly say that I have not been disappointed at any stage since I started using it. Having done quite a lot of research prior to my purchase, I feel that Ettinger is the Rolls Royce of small animal internal medicine texts. It may not have the colour photographs and aesthetically pleasing page lay-out of Nelson and Couto's internal medicine book, but it is easy to read, extremely comprehensive, well indexed and referenced. The pocket compendium also perfectly complements and aids the ease of use of the sister text. As the text is written by US authors it does contain detail on a great number of conditions that are seen rarely in the UK. The presence of this information may however prove invaluable in the future with the possibility of exotic diseases entering the UK from abroad. The sections within the book are large, but are divided into small, handleable chapters. The sections that I have found particularly well written include the cardiovascular system section and also the clinical manifestations of disease section which contains a huge number of differential diagnoses for common presenting conditions. The other great part of this book is the information displayed within the front and back covers on abnormal laboratory findings. This provides a very useful list of differentials for abnormal haematology, biochemistry and urinary evaluation; great for that difficult case or for revision. Its ease of use makes it a perfect text for students and practitioners who want to look up specific things when time is of the essence as well as being the text of choice for those studying for a certificate. This book is perfect to read or simply to dip into. I have used the text a great deal and have always found a wealth of knowledge on whatever I have been investigating. Many multi-author texts are often accused of having chapters that range in quality. From my experience I don't feel that this can be said about Ettinger and Feldman. All sections contain well-written, practically useful, up-to-date information. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to purchase a small animal internal medicine text above all others on the market at the present time.

Great oncology book to keep in the practice, 16 Apr 2008
This book is not so much for the preclinical students, or those who have nothing to do with oncology as its very in depth. It is however ideal for anyone with an interest in oncology or for a practice to keep in their branch as reference. It is written with the latest research, and each chapter has meticulous referencing to original studies and papers. The book is littered with colour photographs from FNA photographs to gross images of the lesions you might see. It also has tables and reference blocks showing vital statistics and highlighting key concepts and info.
It starts at the begining (biology and pathogenesis of cancer) and moves through to specific variations of cancers common in small animal surgery. Its chapter on the diagnostic imaging of oncology has 38 pictures varying from x rays, ultrasound and MRI to MVCT! The cytological diagnosis chapter again has micrographs of the standard signs of cancer and is useful for understand the broader signs to look for under the microscope.
It covers the latest radio and chemotherapy techniques, discusses over gene therapy and other cancer treatment modalities, and (something i didnt expect) chapters on counselling owners and providing high quality palliative care for patients.
And almost 500 pages of specific cancers and tumours.
A great book.

But this is a minor point, and I would recommend the book even if it is just used to check the spellings of the strange names. sticking with it!, 22 Aug 2007
Brilliant! Very helpfull in my 2nd year vet. nursing exams., 29 Jan 2001
It is a very good book because it focuses on the important areas that you need to know in the exam. It also give explainations of the answers to these questions, which is extreamly helpful. A brilliant revision book. Well worth getting!
The sections that I have found particularly well written include the cardiovascular system section and also the clinical manifestations of disease section which contains a huge number of differential diagnoses for common presenting conditions. great for honing your skills, 30 Jun 2001
This book is a little self study course that gives you a wider application of your knowledge. It is a great book, with 'real-life' problems that you have to solve. You get the history, the clinical workup and maybe the radiographs to assess, and then work out your differentials, and if you're really good, diagnose the problems! Whilst I don't think it is a good reference book,it goes one step further in some ways, and works at refining your problem-solving knowledge. I use it to 'brush up'. Some of the cases are really cool, too!
