Indispensable, 09 May 2008
Have had every edition and I still carry a copy in my bag. Anyone doing acute takes who thinks they don't need to reflect on some aspects of some cases will come to grief. I am reassured when I see junior docs carrying a well worn copy.
Brilliant , 05 Feb 2008
This new book is even better than the 6th edition as its tiny! Meaning it's even easier to put in your bag/pocket and delve into on ward rounds/acute takes when your unsure of diagnosis/what to do next!
possible, THE best medical book out there...of all time, 02 Jan 2008
Guys, and gals, this book doesn't even need an introduction. Being only a 2nd year medic, I thought I'd get this now for later usuage, but it really has helped me out so much already. From the handy revision of essential anatomy and physiology for key conditions, to the layout, including advice on OSCEs, emergencies and much more, this book truly is a life saver, and should be given to every 1st year medical student, as it will benefit them for the rest of their career. What are you waiting for, buy it now, and lap it up!! Invaluable!!
Must have for med students!!, 30 Dec 2007
This book covers all areas of internal medicine and surgery in a clear concise way and whats more is that its easy to carry around when your on the wards. This book covers everything from aetiology, epidemiology, clinical features through to the necessary investigations and management of varying conditions. I dont actually know a medical student who doesn't own it!
Perfect for medical students for several reasons:
- Easy to carry
- Includes medical pneumonics (they make its so much easier to remember)
- concise - makes a great revision tool to test your clinical partner
- covers such a broad spectrum of topics
- the radiographs, CT images, MRI section is definately worth a read!!
- it contains evidence-based medicine with easy links to websites
...could it be any better??
The best ever, a must have, 28 Jul 2007
This 7th edition of OHCM, while retaining the much loved concise and essence of the previous editions has been greatly revised, improved and updated. It contains a new chapter on radiology, new information on how to handle common calls and a wider coverage of medications and doses, clinical skills and surgery. The best feature has to be the integrated colour illustrations with pictures and cartoons; and tons of radiographs, CT images, MR1 images etc. The layout is very reader friendly. This is an invaluable study aid for plab and all medical exams. It also has a PDA version, and web links from the book for instant access to evidence based clinical information. This is a must have and if you have a previous edition it is worth the upgrade.

This pocket sized book is an absolute gem for the new/ student physiotherapist. It is packed full of the basic (and some more advanced) facts that you learn and put in to practice during early lectures and placements. In fact i'm sure it's a handy reminder even for experienced physiotherapists every now and then. The plastic cover and size make the book both convenient and hard wearing and therefore ideal to keep in your pocket and use day to day. The layout into Respiratory, Neurological, Pharmacology and Musculoskeletal sections make for easy referencing and finding facts quickly and efficiently. This is aided further by the appendices and clear diagrams and illustrations. Colour coded text high lighting titles from facts makes for easy browsing and information finding. Anatomy, specific tests, brain regions, dermatomes and myotomes, muscles and bones and common conditions are all covered in this goldmine of information. I can't fault this book in anyway when it comes to covering the basics of the knowledge and skills the physiotherapist needs and utilises day to day. Brilliant, 07 Jun 2007
This book has helped me when i just cant remember something or wanted to read up on something i had just come across. Its laid out well into the core sections of physiotherapy, and easy to follow. Worth purchasing in your first year! Most essential physio book ever!, 18 Apr 2006
This book has EVERYTHING in it from GCS to the upperlimb tension tests. Its small enough to carry in your clinic bag.
every student needs this book. it's like a cheat sheet when you can't remember what to do in a clinical situation. Excellent for students & therapists/assistants, 30 Nov 2005
This book has been the best buy in my student life so far. Very easy to use and just enough detail. I know many qualified therapists who still keep a copy close to hand. The book includes overviews of the main areas of Physio; Musculoskeletal, Neurology, Respiratory and also includes a Pharmacology section. It is an excellent quick reference guide and has easy to follow diagrams and charts. It outlines the basic information and principles and is structured and presented well. It has comprehensive musculoskeletal & neurological anatomy, tests and descriptions of common pathologies. It includes relevant informative data and contraindications to treatment. The pharmacology section includes an A - Z drugs list with descriptions. Medical abbreviations, electrotherapy precautions, conversion tables and Adult & Paediatric basic life support are also included. The book provides excellent references and further reading pointers for more detailed information. The only negative thing I have to raise is that the book is light blue and black text. The book is purely a reference point and anyone wishing to study from it may be grateful of a colour copy. Don't let this put you off as it is an excellent book. I would recommend this book to anyone studying Physiotherapy or working in the Physio field as it has the right amount of detail and is worth the money.
'facts at your fingertips', 02 Dec 2004
This book is a very useful resource for physiotherapists and provides a great deal of information that is easily accessible. It's compact size means that the book can be carried around on the ward and provides information at your fingertips. The book is very well illustrated and it is clearly divided into sub-sections. I can't believe that this won't become an essential textbook for juniors and students.

Very Repetitive, 13 Mar 2008
The chapters are repetitive. The book gives you an idea of how to assess without going into specific details about why we do what we do and what to do with our findings.
Doesn't include Muscle tests!, 07 Jul 2006
I read the synopsis for this book and was lead to believe that this would help me prepare for my practical examination and assessment of lower limb injuries. It didn't, it contains absolutely no information on manual muscle testing!!!! which is one of the core parts of examination and assessment. All the book does is refer you to other books with the muscle tests in them, in every chapter!! i was thoroughly dissapointed and am now going to have to spend another 30 pounds getting a book that includes the muscle tests.
Waste of money
Strongly Recommended, 29 Jan 2006
Unquestionably this book is core reading material for assisting students and newly qualified therapists alike. Its systematic and logical approach clearly guides the reader through step by step without any complications. Many of my physio colleagues can only praise the author for this and all her other editions. The subjective and physical examination chapters sufficiently contain all the necessary criteria for the initial and follow up assessments with comprehensive literature and illustrations. The extensive use of photographic images for every joint test and assessment technique not only visually stimulates the reader, but also makes it so much easier to perform the techniques. The appealing presentation and layout suggest the book is very reader friendly and is one of the better therapy publications on the market.
A fantastic aid, 20 Mar 2001
I found this book on the shelf at Waterstones and knew it was a book I'd been looking for for ages. As a second year massage therapist student(soon to study osteopathy) I've been reading G D Maitland's Periferal Manipulation & Vertebral Manipulation as a diagnostic help. In this book the authors (who quote Maitland extensively and as he says in the foreword of this book) 'have brought together a field that has grown almost out of recognition over the last 50 years'. For every joint there is a comprehensive set of tests and assessment techniques to evaluate soundly and confidently; with excellent photographic, clear & concise illustrations (unlike the Maitland books which are pencil drawn and not as clear)and step by step procedure it really is a fantastic aid.

Fascinating Subject, 04 Oct 2008
For those who love the intrigue of the human body, this is a fascinating book. It is very thought provoking and has definitely helped me in my own business.
A must read for anyone involved in Sports Injuries.
Essential reading......, 07 Feb 2008
Essential reading and reference book for anyone who wishes to deeply understand and work with the complexity of the myofascial structure and postural distortions in the body . Clear, informative, complex, comprehensive.
Unmissable book; no, seriously..., 29 Jan 2008
This book is that good if you are involved in working with bodies e.g. exercise, massage, physio, dance, movement therapy etc. There are many good books for straight anatomy lessons, but none as good at completing the human approach to integrating all that technical infromation, so you get to see what really matters to how bodies function (or don't).
Really apprecite the great use of sidebars and boxes for related comments and asides on the areas in discussion (often revealing thought provoking ideas you just want to rush off and explore further!)
Layout is clear enough to follow systematically through the lines in turn, revealing Myer's logic for connecting tissues and channels of communication through the entire system, masterful.
The book simply proves to be a highly graceful unification of so many previously disparate areas of expertise, Myers makes you feel you can always find relevance to whatever field of knowledge you bring to the book.
Myers is one of the bigger fish in the still too small pond of myofascial work, and what he says is worth listening too wherever you may find it, or him (well worth watching on the related DVD's too. The ladies love him, so does the camera, and he knows it! But we'll let him off for what he will enlighten us with.)
Well connected, 03 Sep 2007
I was first introduced to Tom Myers work through Elizabeth Bussey, a brilliant Polestar Pilates educator during my training with her. Had I not experienced it first I would have found it difficult to understand the Anatomy trains principle...simply because my understanding of anatomy was through the habit of isolating Muscle function. This version is far more functional and appeals to anyone interested in movement and Myofascial meridians. It's helped enormously in improving my understanding of movement and has made it easier for me to communicate it when teaching clients. I would recommend this to anyone who works as a body worker or movement practitioner... I would have given it a 5 star rating except that I feel the layout could be better.

An Excellent Set of Scripts and Guidance, 01 Aug 2008
Roger Allen presents a comprehensive and extremely elegantly written collection of scripts for all aspects of hypnotherapy - inductions, deepeners, and scripts for a wide range of specific problems. I particularly like the sections on pain management (including visiting the dentist), smoking cessation, negative emotions, bereavement, and accessing "lost" memories. There's also a small collection of very nice metaphors and a number of short essays on related topics including stage hypnosis, anchoring, parts therapy and others. Personally I would also have liked some essays on the practicalities of running a hypnotherapy practice (I am sure Mr Allen has a lot to share on that) but this, perhaps, is not the book for that. Nevertheless, this is an excellent collection of scripts for all practising hypnotherapists - all of them beautifully written.
Very thorough, 09 Apr 2008
A very thorough reference covering several of the more common issues hypnotherapists deal with on a day to day basis. At the same time it's very straightforward and for the experienced therapist you can almost open up and use a script straightaway (after doing all the preliminaries in the consultation/pre-induction talk of course). And the scripts really are wonderful and rhythmic and cover all the right points. The Smoking Cessation script is one I've used more than once with great success. One of more valuable hypnosis reference books.
Scripts and strategies - great scripts for immediate use!, 17 Jan 2005
Allen collates both his previous volumes of collected Scripts and Strategies in Hypnotherapy together in this work. Many inductions are included and a few deepeners. Rightly, most of the work is concerned with the business of therapy itself. Many situation-specific ego-strengtheners are included, as well as sections on common issues such as pain management and anxiety. The ever-popular smoking-cessation, fear-management and weight-control receive large chapters of their own which I have found invaluable in my Central-Manchester, Wilmslow and Romiley clinics. Previous reviews of the two separate volumes have always touted the scripts as off-the-peg verbatim scripts and frameworks around which to base a bespoke item for the client. However some of the scripts come over as a little too specific for undiluted use, causing me to go through with a pencil making notes. Part eleven is entitled Therapy Strategies and includes tips for dealing with abreaction, age progression, re-framing, anchors etc. and each of these tactics is dealt with very well. However that is what they are; tactics (or gambits), not strategies. Therapeutic strategy involves various decisions such as "when is it useful to switch from a behaviouristic approach to a classic-dynamic one?" or "should I address the symptom or the cause (or both) in this particular case?" or "how can I most usefully model the direction(s) of causation between the different aspects of this complaint? " etc. The majority of the scripts, allude to and reflect various strategies as, necessarily so, each script must be based on some paradigm or another. The only exception being the smoking cessation pages where the strategy and paradigm are discussed specifically, (e.g. Aversion vs. Coercion?) Due to the name of the book, I expected to see some alternative potential conceptions of the nature of each presentation along with their respective interventions, but that's not what the book is all about. The formatting decisions of choosing a large font, and starting each new script on a new page, strongly hint at the book's ultimate purpose. It looks clean and is easily read allowing easy, quick access in the consulting room. After a short introduction to hypnosis it's just cover to cover useful scripts. An index would be welcome, as would be a more complete synopsis of each script, but ultimately the complete re-formatting of the two volumes of 'Scripts and Tactics in Hypnotherapy' has made it much more convenient and better value. Now offering twice as many scripts per pound!
Perfect for Hypnotherapist Training, 22 Feb 2004
This book is the perfect tool for all Trainee and Qualified hypnotherapists. The tools and stratagies help develop complex and proffesional Scripts. The scripts within the Works help to give the guidlines needed to help in the treatment of Phobias through to Smoking Ceasation. A must buy recommended to all on my Course.
A Wonderful Rescource for Therapists in Training, 20 Feb 2004
This wonderful book gives examples of Scripts for everyday use in Hypnotherapy. As a Hypnotherapist in training I have found it the perfect tool to help write Scripts for everything from Phobias to General Well being. A must for any therapist today. Anyone who has read the two other versions will be impressed by the content in this Complete Works.

A super little book, 13 Sep 2007

First point of call, 29 May 2007
Well laid out. easy to read. lots of nice diagrams. ok so it won't get you honours points but should contain enough to pass and is far less intimidating than those huge physiology texts. great for preclinical medics. not enough detail for pure physiology students though.
A useful starting point for medical students, 19 Jan 2003
Human Physiology is a useful introductory text to physiology, particularly for first year medical students who may find some of the more detailed texts somewhat overwhelming. This book is well written and approaches the various topics clearly and systematically. Unfortunately it does not provide quite enough detail to be used as a primary reference source, though it can be valuable if used along side another more detailed book such as 'Physiology' from Berne and Levy.
clear, well laid out approach to physiology, 23 Oct 2001
This book is easy to read but also gives enough details to cover the essentials of a human physiology course. The lay-out breaks it down into clear sections that make it easier to read and learn. It explains itself clearly and makes some of the more complicated issues easier to handle and digest. If you are having difficulty with another text then get/use this one!

Unstructured but better than the previous version, 02 Oct 2007
The change to colour is a vast improvement but it has some pretty big failings. The information is relatively comprehensive but is spread out over several chapters and sub chapters. This means that you have to hunt for the rest of the information across several sub chapters and sections that would naturally be grouped together. Makes it great fun for lecturers as you literally do have to read every single sentence, and many chapters, to make sure you don't miss anything. The structure of the information is also strangely set out so it's difficult to pull out what you need simply. If we didn't use this as a text on our course we'd suggest better options like Grays anatomy for students, Tortola and a few others.
A key text for those studying anatomy, 11 Mar 2007
The main advantage this book has over other anatomy texts is it combines anatomy with biomechanics. If the concepts of pure biomechanics seem daunting then the movement descriptors in this book will be much easier to understand. It is well layed out with clear, easy-to-find colour coded sections - enabling the reader to easily dip in to specific anatomical areas.
A couple of criticisms; no referenced list to substantiate the text. Also the shaded graphics are poor compared with other books. Although anatomically accurate, if you want to see the structures exactly how they appear in the human body, and in quite graphic detail, you'd be better off with Netter's Atlas of Human Anatomy (though this is pure anatomy, with no function).
It would be suited to physiotherapists, doctors and sports therapists or anyone with a specialism in the musculoskeletal side of anatomy. The text is aimed at degree level and beyond so not for the casual reader.
Certainly not for bed time reading..., 16 Feb 2007
Im a first year physiotherapy student and we have used palastanga as our musculoskeletal 'bible' - It has got a lot of useful detail in it which is needed although I would definately advise buying another simpler atlas of anatomy or something to help make this a little more palatable! - Originally, without any physio/anatomy knowledge, this book was just a muddle of complicated words that meant nothing to me...
great improvement, 09 May 2006
Normally it takes me 10 minutes to search through an anatomy text book to find one small piece of information (and when you are studying - every 10 minutes count). This new edition of 'Anatomy and Human movement' however, is lead out in such a simple and logical sequence that finding exactly what you're looking for takes no time at all. Also, the introduction of coloured diagrams and colour coded sections makes it much more easily read than the fourth edition.
This is a great improvement from the previous edition and well worth the investment for any student or professional.
NEED TO LEARN ANATOMY FAST? THIS IS THE BOOK, 12 Mar 2006
I AM A STUDENT CURRENTLY STUDYING FOR A SPORTS THERAPY COURSE WHERE WE HAVE THE TOP PHYSIOTHERAPIST AS OUR LETUCURES. THIS IS THE BOOK THEY RECOMEND FOR USE AND IT IS REALLY SIMPLE TO FOLLOW AND UNDERSTAND, EVEN BETTER THEN THE 4TH ED WHERE IT IS IN COLOUR, WELL WOTH THE MONEY. MUST BE TRYED I BET IT WILL HELP WITH YOUR STUDYS.

A super little book, 13 Sep 2007
I would recommend this book to anyone studying Physiotherapy or working in the Physio fi | | |
