great book, 26 Aug 2007
I read this book sraight after A Crowded Marriage and was not expecting to anjoy the main character as much, but i did. I also didn't find the plot as predictable as others did, i wondered throughout who Rosie would end up with and really enjoyed the final chapter.
Other parts of the book were slightly predicatle such as the problems Rosie would face and i found myself reading as quick as possible to get past the slightly irritating bits.
On the whole though, i found it laugh out loud funny, fast paced and really heart warming. Alliot has a great way of letting you really get into the characters head, feeling what they feel. An author i will continue to read.
It really does make you laugh out loud!, 29 Jan 2007
Having read the reviews of this book before I read it, I was delighted to discover that it really did make me laugh out loud, the incident of Harry and the babysitter's new coat was the first of many hilarious situations. Although the storyline is somewhat predictable, the outrageously funny way in which it is told makes up for it. You must read this book if you want a really really good laugh. I will definitely be reading more books by Catherine Alliott.
Hilarious!, 06 Nov 2006
I loved this book so much. I adored Rosie and her mental family, especially her mum. I didn't want the book to end and I would love a sequal as I'd like to know how the characters move on. If you like Bridget Jones, as I do, read this book as Rosie is just as clumsy and just as funny. Superb!
Funniest Ever, 21 Jun 2006
I borrowed this book from a friend and and thought it wasn't really my thing HOW WRONG was I. This was the most funniest book I have ever read and had me laughing out loud constantly. I have since read 3 other books by this author and they are all great, but this is by far the best. BUY IT NOW!
totally predictable and boring in parts, 22 May 2006
I feel like I have to review this book because I don't feel that it deserves 5*'s.
i did find the book funny in parts and I did laugh out only once. I don't think that is any where near as funny as the Shopaholic books or Can you keep a secret.
I found my self skipping whole parargraphs because a lot of what is written is rosies's thoughts half of the book is spent in her head.
You will know the outcome as soon as you meet the guy she is going to be with. I found it all too obvious like a cheesy made for tv film with the crossed wires, jealous exes, meddling parents and running to catch the man of your dreams before its too late!!
Read it if you have nothing better to read other wise pick up a sophie kinsella, I would not buy this book, I found it a disappointment after the reviews i read.

Catherine Alliott always knows hows to write a likeable character that jumps off the page with realism. And this time was no different... The story of Polly Penhalligan carried on from 'The Old Girl Network' had me intrigued from the word 'go'. Her seemingly perfect life is speckled with bouts of realistic flaws that we all suffer from in real life that make this novel leap at you as you find yourself relating to situations and moments that Polly is experiencing. It makes her real. And everyone loves to read about 'real' characters with a 'real' story to tell. And this is what Catherine Alliott has done - and she tells the story brilliantly. Having read each and every novel of Catherine Alloitt's, I'm an admirer of her ability to turn imaginary characters in her mind to truthful, charasmatic, geniune people on paper. And it doesn't stop, the story just keeps on going... A fantastic read. I took four of her novels with me on holiday and read each of them three times before I got back home. Riveting!
unputdownable!, 25 Mar 2004
I read the Old Girl Network just after Xmas and thought it was brilliant so when i learned there was a sequal i had to ruch out to buy it! I was not disappointed! From start to finish Polly has you locked in her fantasy world where anything is possible! She agrees to lend her home and land to a film crew and its "actors" for their new ad this as can be imagined sparks this hilarious witty book giving everyone who has ever been bored, tired or just down right unenthusiastic a taste of their own medicine! it is well worth the read it will have you giggling and wondering into the early hours! A tad predictable i suppose but downright excellent! Deffinately not the last of Alliots i will be reading!
Rather tedious bored-housewife tale, 10 Jan 2003
Catherine Alliott seems to have cornered the market on tales of scatty, bored housewives looking for extramarital hanky-panky. Another of her books, The Real Thing, was a particularly excruciating example of this sub-genre. Compared to TRT, which suffered from a dreadful main character, Going Too Far is more bearable. The heroine Polly, who first appeared in The Old-Girl Network, is now somewhat happily married but has a roving eye. The humour is rather forced (like a mediocre sit-com) and there are elements of menace and melodrama that never quite work. Not one of the worst books I've ever read, but only worth reading for free from the local library.
Not 'going too far' with praise for this book., 17 Jul 2002
This book was a fantastic read- a wickedly funny romance that captures the heart of the reader. it combines wit, frivolry and humour. At times, I found myself in tears of laughter! The scatty hero, Polly is fantastic and every 20something girl in Britain will be able to relate to her. Through this book, we follow her intermost fears and unavoidable dilemmas! This book is any easy read which you can pick up at any time. It isnt complicated and would, I imagine appeal most to young, single, career minded women. It combines harmless fun with an underlying moral and makes an excellent read. I couldnt put it down!
Funny!, 07 May 2001
I did enjoy this book which I purchased after reading Oliva's Luck. The lead character of Polly is funny as a city girl out of water in the country scene. Particularly liked the horse awards at the beginning! However I have to say that I much prefered Oliva's Luck to this as the storyline was a tad predictable and did not have as many storylines running throught it.

Would have been 5 stars but...., 18 Aug 2007
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, was captivated by the setting, the characters (especially Benjy and Francis) and the story. Like other reviewers, it was one I picked up a while ago but never quite got round to getting past the synopsis on the the back cover! What a shame, because had I read it immediately, I would probably have bought several more Catherine Alliots by now! However, just at the point that I was getting 'lost' in the story, there was one glaring error that suddenly snapped me out of 'the zone':- Rupert called on Hetty at the farmhouse in Kent having just landed at Andover 'about 30 miles away' - There is no airport at Andover (military or otherwise) and Andover is in Hampshire - at least three counties away! This may seem like nitpicking but this one paragraph detracted from the pleasure of a book that until then had me believing every word - Sorry Catherine, it lost you a star! Otherwise I loved it!
A cut above the competition, 06 Jun 2007
I read a lot of 'chick lit' and find much of it can be rather predictable and samey. I can't honestly report that this book was not quite predictable but it is a cut above the rest of the 'chick lit' out there. It is funny and charming. I liked the characters and cared what happened to them.
It is easy to read and dip in and out of, perfect for a holiday. A light hearted look at how sometimes we all misread situations and jump to conclusions when we don't have all the facts, this book is the one to read if you want a book which doesn't take itself too seriously. I guarantee it will make you laugh!
Very good, 02 Jun 2007
For some reason I left this on my bookshelf for ages before finally picking it up- maybe because the plot on the back sounded a little far-fetched, maybe because it seems quite long. I don't know and can honestly say if I knew what the story was like I'd have picked this up much sooner.
It is a very engaging plot with some excellent twists. Very humorous in places but also touching, this is a real chick lit novel with a great plotline running through.
It follows the tribulations of Herietta Tate, a mother returning to work for the first time in years. The charcter is well built up and very engaging. It really feels as if we are right there with her at times which shows the writing must be good. The time passed so quickly when I was reading this that I stayed up late into the night on several occassions. It really does draw you in and, in my opinion at least, is a real page turner. Give it a try, it's defintely worth it.
Enjoyed This!, 08 Nov 2006
My wife gave me this to read as a break from my normal style of reading which is mainly Sci/Fi & Fantasy. I enjoyed it and it was very light and easy to read. It flowed well with a few unexpected turns.
Easy, chilled out read, 19 Oct 2006
I found this book very easy and relaxing to read. The story I found is a bit over the top, but once you're reading it you will actuall get into it and not find it not over the top ! This is the first novel I have read by Catherine Alliott and it certainly will not be the last as I've been out and bought 3 more ! Well worth a read in my opinion.

disapointing, 05 Apr 2008
found this story a little difficult to follow initally as it was a tadge boring and confusing. At one point I nearly put the book away however as I dont like giving up half way through I finished the book . I must say towards the end it grabbed my attention and my concentration lifted although I would not pass this on to my daughter as I do with all my other books. Nothing like the title suggests
a HUGE disappointment, 09 Aug 2005
I am sorry to disagree with most of the reviewers here, however I found this book painfully annoying, tedious and stupid. It's almost like slapstick comedy if you enjoy that sort of thing. The central character plays the part of a complete moron. And when the main character grates on your nerves the whole book through, and other characters deserve nothing more than a good stomping on - which of course they never get - I'd say it's time to give the book a miss. There is way to much background mumbo jumbo - in fact I'd go so far as to say there's more mumbo jumbo than dialogue and action. I kept skipping those bits if for no other reason than they were mind numbingly boring. I am amazed at the positive reaction to this book, but I'm afraid in this case, I'm going to be the odd one out.
Well worth a read!, 08 Jul 2004
I first read this book a couple of years ago and found it really good fun. It's the kind of book you can come back to and read again and again. It will still make you smile! Well worth reading.

I love Polly!!!, 20 Feb 2004
On reading this book, Polly gets into your head. She became my new best friend. She is a wonderful character and made me laugh out loud so many times, it got a little embarrassing!! Read this book for smiles, laughs and a great love story with plenty of ups and downs!!

Realistic Writing At It's Best, 23 Jun 2004
Read it!, 08 Jul 2004
This is such a funny book. I read it for the first time a couple of years ago and it's the kind of book that you can go back to and read again and again because it will still make you smile! Well worth a read.
I love Polly!!!, 20 Feb 2004
On reading this book, Polly gets into your head. She became my new best friend. She is a wonderful character and made me laugh out loud so many times, it got a little embarrassing!! Read this book for smiles, laughs and a great love story with plenty of ups and downs!!
much more than an affair, 05 Aug 2007
I thought this book was going to simply be about a love affair with a married man, but it was sooooo much more. It had lots of other story lines running through and was very gripping. The characters were a cocktail of all sorts which kept it really interesting. It also had lots of twists and turns causing me to gasp out loud quite a few times! All in all I found this book was brilliant, lots going on but still a light read. I would definately recommend it!
Not bad...but room for improvement!, 21 Jan 2007
I think that Catherine Alliot has a great idea for a story here- I got hooked and wanted to find out what happened. Being a young girl and liking a married man myself I could relate to some of it. You will be gripped and some of the characters are easy to sympathise with. However in my opinion there was not enough sex and it was not particularly well written.
Awful!, 30 Mar 2006
I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone. It's so boring! Absolutely predictable! Awful!
Wonderful Read, 10 Mar 2005
I have now read 3 books by this author, very enjoyable, easy reading, good story. Only one criticism, she has tended to forget details further into the book, Friday's date becomes a Monday date, the dark blue aga turns red however, that aside I am looking forward to the next one
Has your heart in your mouth, 17 Aug 2004
I borrowed this book from the villa we stayed at recently on holiday and have never read a book by this author before, though I will go and find some of her previous titles very shortly. I loved this book. I particularly liked the way that it was about one person and that with each chapter the story just carried on, rather than jumping all over the place as some books do. The tension between her and Charlie was just so realistic, I could feel the anticipation and lust as though I was there with him. It was a sheer joy to read and made getting up with the little ones at 5.30am every day well worth it!

great book, 26 Aug 2007
I read this book sraight after A Crowded Marriage and was not expecting to anjoy the main character as much, but i did. I also didn't find the plot as predictable as others did, i wondered throughout who Rosie would end up with and really enjoyed the final chapter.
Other parts of the book were slightly predicatle such as the problems Rosie would face and i found myself reading as quick as possible to get past the slightly irritating bits.

Having read the reviews of this book before I read it, I was delighted to discover that it really did make me laugh out loud, the incident of Harry and the babysitter's new coat was the first of many hilarious situations. Regrets about The Real Thing, 03 Jul 2006
I have read Rosie Meadows Regrets and truly adored it. So it was with much anticipation that I picked up The Real Thing. Unfortunately, I am completely with the first two reviewers; in fact it is not often in my consumption of Chic Lit that I want the heroine to come to a sticky end, but my God how thick and self-obsessed was she? If you want to work up some annoyance it is probably worth reading. If you want a giggle and a deserved happy ending, read Rosie Meadows Regrets.
The worst thing I have read in a long time., 15 Mar 2006
I'm finding it hard to find suitable words to describe how I felt about this book. I found the main character to be completely self-obsessed and was at a loss as to how she had snared this wonderful husband she was considering cheating on. As a 'lower class' working mother, I became increasingly irritated at Tess' tribulations - school run and shopping in one morning - the poor love! I also wondered why it was necessary for brand names to be continually inserted throughout the book. I found it completely unbelievable how the main characters would go into a rambling rant at the slightest thing - do people actually talk like that in Alliot's world? The twists and turns in the plot were quite entertaining, but for me the book was spoilt because most of the characters in the book were irritating in the extreme. Without doubt, the worst book I have read in a long time and I would have to be tortured before I read another book by this author.
Unappealing main character ruins this book, 30 Dec 2002
The Real Thing was my first Catherine Alliott read; she came highly recommended, but this book proved a tremendous disappointment. The book was well-written enough, but like a previous reviewer, I found the main character off-putting in the extreme. Her intense selfishness and nasty behavior made me long for her comeuppance, but alas, she was granted an undeserved happy ending. The fact that the book was written in the first person, from her point of view, only accentuated her utter self-obsession. I know the real world is full of such people, but hey, isn't this supposed to be fun escapist fiction?!
Funny book, shame about the main character, 07 Mar 2001
Mabye it's just me, but as much as I love Catherine Alliott's books, the main character, Tessa, in "The Real Thing" was absolutely irritating and annoying. Catherine Alliott writes some great stuff and is very witty, but Tess...I was secretly hoping that she would get what she deserved, and not the "happy" ending she got.
this book was so much fun to read., 04 Mar 2001
I've never read such a funny and recognizable book before. I think it's brilliant. I had to laugh loud so many times.

A wonderful read, 18 Nov 2008
As with all of Catherine Alliott's work, this is a wonderful story. We laugh and gasp and feel anger and great sympathy for Imogen. What a terribly human character she is.Life throws her some very curved balls, and she manages to rise above these situations and keep her dignity, well, almost.
I gave my daughter this book, and she found it a wonderful read. She really needed cheering up, as she has just had a hurricane and flood rush through her home in Galveston Texas. This book had her laughing until tears.
Thankyou Catherine Alliott. Your next book will be on pre-order!!
What A Treat!, 08 Aug 2008
I was given the earlier Alliott books by a friend who raved about them. Unfortunately I didn't feel the same. I found her earlier characters either morons or really irritating however, what an absolute delight A Crowded Marriage is. I loved every one of the characters, I loved the setting of the country village, I loved the whole working of the book. I'm rather difficult to please when it comes to humour in books but I have to say this really made me laugh out loud many, many times. I smiled through the whole book. OK so there aren't twists and turns at every corner but do you really want that if you're looking for lighthearted entertainment. I strongly recommend this book if you're looking for something to lift your spirits.
At last Alliott returns to form, 01 Apr 2008
As I re-read "The Old Girl Network" and "Going Too Far" every year or so, I have persevered with Catherine Alliott's subsequent offerings, only to finish them feeling a little cheated. However, with "A Crowded Marriage", she is definitely returning to the feel-good factor so apparent in her earlier work. There are some good characterisations, a number of laugh-out-loud moments, and yes, as with all chick-lit, Imogen, (the main character), gets her happy ending, which you can't really deny her. This is one book I shan't be re-selling on Amazon!
Easy read, 10 Jan 2008
An easy read, enjoyable but as with other Alliot books I have read continuity leaves a bit to be desired! We had one occasion where a child was starting school the "next", hubby not at work that day which resulted in a row. Next thing we are starting school but there is reference to hubby having had a 2 hour commute from work to get home the previous day! More care perhaps by both author and publisher. As I said not the first time this sort of thing has happened. However, I am reading this type of book after a bereavement and I wanted something light and easy to read so I am getting what I paid for.
Disappointing - a writer on auto-pilot, 05 Jan 2008
I was really looking forward to this book as I have enjoyed all the other books by Catherine Alliot that I have read. With this one, I had the impression that she was writing on auto-pilot and has started to take her readers for granted. There were too many editorial slip-ups as well - in one scene Imogen is loading the dishwasher, but about 50 pages later we're told the kitchen is too small for a dishwasher.
All in all, very disappointing. The plotting was far too contrived - even for chick lit - and the ending far too pat.

Product Description
Fans of Catherine Alliot's other novels will be pleased to find that they can add another page-turner to their growing libraries. Olivia's Luck is a combination of gentle farce, emotional heartache and some uplifting moments. Olivia (Livvy) recounts the sudden breakdown of her 10-year-old marriage and the swings and roundabouts that follow. Alliot has created a seductive cast of characters, from Livvy's 10-year-old daughter and the cockney builders to her mother-in-law and old school friends, all of whom seem realistic, with a dash of the drama queen for the fun of the story. Although--or maybe because--the novel is damning about the fate of marriages and the bad behaviour of men, the story will strike a chord with many thirtysomething women. As with Alliot's other novels, this is a book that demands to be read in one sitting, devouring the pages alongside the chocolates. The ending is happy in a fittingly idiosyncratic way, and a fine reward for an afternoon away from real life. Ultimately, though Livvy seems to lead a "a very unusual and complicated life ... nutters and weirdos at every corner ... on intimate terms with the police...", she is an ordinary 21st-century woman trying to carve out a comfortable life for her and her daughter.
Customer Reviews
great book, 26 Aug 2007
Realistic Writing At It's Best, 23 Jun 2004
