Many of us know The Snow Queen-in itself, one of Andersen's most dramatic stories. This version, brought out by the excellent Templar, is illustrated by a young and very fine Ukrainian illustrator, Vladyslav Yerko. He appears to specialize in minute details which combine to create an atmosphere which is almost tangible-this book is full of cold and frostiness !
This would make a wonderful present to someone of virtually any age. And I'm waiting with baited breath for more English-language books containing Yerko pictures.

Delights- some more than others!, 23 Nov 2002
All the famous tales are here along with the not so famous (and not so good) eg The Dung Beetle. Anderson's tales have always struck me as more for adults than for children (just look at the disney-fication of A Little Mermaid) and there is a certain darkness that permeates this collection. Important for its fame and a pleasure in its simplicity. It's a shame some of the stories don't add up to much but an excellent read anyway.

famous writer tells vivid stories of his travel adventures, 24 Aug 1999
Anastasia Little, a native of Denmark, has trans-lated for the first time Andersen's accounts of his travels in Europe and the Mediterranean, meeting a fascinating and colorful cast of characters under circumstanceds which seem like another world to a reader today. a book full of unexpected oddities and beautiful descriptions which gives us Andersen in a new role as a social historian of arevolutionary epoch as Europe entered the industrial age and life began to change at a much more rapid pace. But all this is coincidental to the sheer enjoyment of discovering Andersden himself as a person telling a different kind of story, or rather many stories of a world that was his own reality.
