not what you expect from Martina Cole, 02 Dec 2008
I was really disappointed with this book and also Martina Cole's last novel "Faces". I used to say that Martina Cole was my favourite author, but regret that this is no longer the case. In the business Martina just keeps on repeating the same things over and over again. You are told them same thing about the characters over and over again. I think i was told the main character was "a user, and not just a drug user" at least six times. The thoughts of the main characters four year old daughter were so unrealistic. A four year old would not be old enough to have the thoughts Martina Cole has put to paper! I am still a huge fan, but would recommend anyone thinking about buying this book to buy any of Martina Cole's first six novels or you are unlikely to read another if you start with this one! A very disappointed Marina Cole fan.
what a shame, 30 Nov 2008
I have read all of Martina Cole's books and, up until her last, Faces, I have always found them an excellent read but sadly 'The Business' is actually the worse of them all.
The whole story could have been written in half the number of pages. Really boring.
Glad I borrowed the from the library and didn't spend money on it.
I agree with other reviewers, it feels as if Martina has given up trying as she knows that her name will sell the book.
I for one won't bother with the next one.
Disappointed !, 28 Nov 2008
This was so boring - Martina repeated the same thing over and over and over - the first 40 pages or so were good but it all went horribly wrong after that - I struggled to finish it - my mum and daughter have it and agree with me - they have it from the library unlike me who paid good money for it - wish I had waited - I had read an excellent book called Sadie before this and thought maybe that was why I hadn't enjoyed it as much but looking at the other reviews can see I am not the only one disappointed - I must say though I did enjoy the book Faces so much so I could of read it again -did not want that to finish but with this one was glad to see the back of it !
another BIG let down, 25 Nov 2008
What a repetetive load of rubbish!let down again after a poor last book,i thought this one would be better, but it's worse!a waste of my time reading it.and my money.
Absolute shame, 22 Nov 2008
I used to be able to read a Martina Cole in just 2 days. I'm now 2 weeks into this book and only on page 281. I am so bored, it's unbelivable. I will finish this book as I've never not finished one of hers but I couldn't care less what happens to the dreadful Imelda, whether she lives or dies, straightens herself out or is brutally murdered. I DON'T CARE!!
It must be hard for an author, full of some really good ideas, get their break with some fabulous books and becomes a number one seller. I assume they are then under contract and have to churn out a book a year. I imagine that once the ideas dry up and because they have deadlines to meet, perhaps writing becomes more of a chore and less of a pleasure.
I'd rather wait 2 years and have a great Martina Cole than the rubbish she has churned out these last 3 years.
She's the only author who's books I keep, lining my bookshelf, I sell all the rest on Amazon. Only the first few books are read and re-read. The ones in the middle might get read again someday, the last few are just there for decoration and will no doubt gather dust.
Another of my favourite authors died this year, I mourn her loss. I mourn the loss of Martina Cole too and she's very much alive!
Oh well, let's see what page 282 brings............!

Fantastic!!!, 30 Oct 2008
I albsolutely loved this book! The way it is written from 3 points of view is fantastic but I could never go to sleep after reading about the Grantly Ripper and had to make sure I ended on Kate or Kelly to avoid a sleepless night! George is soooooo creepy, it is brilliant!!!
My absolute favourite book - a definate read!!!
Best book i've read, 09 Sep 2008
Absolutely gripping....usually find my interest in books going up and down as chapters go on but this one keeps you excited on every page.
Got all the elements you need....thriller, crime, romance and more!!
Am now working my way through the rest of martina's impressive collection.
This should have a warning label, 23 Aug 2008
So where to begin with this suspense/thriller novel??
I am shocked at this book, fair enough the author has an imagination however I do feel that there should be some kind of age restriction or warning label on the cover, I know what you're going to say, read the back cover it clearly states that the horrific character George Markham indulges in "an orgy of vicious sexual depravity" but in places I feel that this book went too far, was too graphic and was not necessary. The need to explain and involve children in the storyline disgusted me and made me feel like crying.
I also feel that novels like these, may make the reader open their eyes to the 'modern' world we live in but can also increase the fear of crime throughout society. I was interested to see the way the Police service was explained in the book, the so called CID which should be renamed the 'boys club' constantly mentioning that DI Kate Burrows may not be up to the case did not work for me. I am not trying with a feminist approach here but felt that the author tried to include as much male chauvinist attitude to niche both the male and female readers of the crime genre.
On a lighter note the reasons for me giving the novel 4 stars are down to the fact that this book was clearly researched and planned. Similar in the way Martina writes her first book, the reader is constantly thrown between the present day, the killers past and the turn of events from his childhood which leaves the reader speculating as to whether or not Markham's past contributed to his sick activities of the main storyline. The fact that a person's natural instinct for revenge for the killers activities are clearly stated and show that Cole has considered a real persons feelings about the activities that go on in the story.
Markham's paranoia about what his is doing is very subtle and so made me feel that if he was a real person then he would be a very dangerous person indeed. The fact that when Markham continues to kill the deaths become more violent. Too conclude I would recommend this book to other readers but would warn them first that in places the book is graphic but is a fantastic read.
One of her best books by far!, 08 Aug 2008
This was the first Martina Cole book I read, bit sick in some places but one of the best books I have ever read. I recommended it to a girl at work and she used to read it from her drawer she loved it that much. Bought a copy for my mother-in-law but she said it was a bit rude/sick and never finished it. I would say to read this first if you are going to read any other of her books, this is the best one.
My favourite book by Martina Cole, 08 May 2008
Wow...What a read. This is Martina when she was at her very best and though i have only read 3 of her books this one is excellent and less swearing than her later books!!!! I had no trouble getting into the story and although fiction it could very well have been true as it is a realistic !!!

this book has just made me addicted to reading again after not having picked up a book for 10 years.Powerful story line and you feel for the characters, this book drew me to tears, fantastic read
a must read, unputdownable, 06 May 2008
I originaly read this story when it first come out but decided to read it again as I really enjoyed it the first time - I have to say it is still a excellent! The story of cathy growing up on the streets and been taken under someones wing until her past comes back to haunt her is brilliant - and yet again i cried at the end - one of my fave martina cole books - up there with two women which is also excellent!
Unputdownable, 11 Jan 2008
I loved this book from beginning to end. It only took a weekend to read and I absolutely loved the characters, the plot, everything! The only thing I think would have completed the book would be for Denise to have made a reappearance as I would like to have known what became of her after they escape the school.
I would definately recomend to anyone who like these sort of books or would like to give them a go.
Gripping, 16 Jul 2007
Quite a long story with many characters, was a hard read but still really enjoyed this book. Read many Martina cole books and although they are all dark stories they are always different. I got into the characters and felt like I really knew them. Was upset to see the story end I wanted it go on forever. Great story and well interlinked between the lives of the different people.
Far Too Long, 23 May 2007
This was the second Martina Cole book I read, [after The Take] and whilst it had a strong beginning it seemed to lose it and meander in the middle section before a weak end.
Not as compelling as The Take but I find the books easy to read and good companions when travelling on business.

Call me madam...., 28 Jul 2008
My mum lent me this when I was staying at hers and having finished Sniper One (see other review) in two days I was stuck for something to read. Not my usual choice, but I found it enjoyable and it is now my guilty secret.
The Cavanaghs were a large family of Irish immigrants struggling in London's East End at the turn of the century. When the no-good drunkard father is offered two pounds a week for the "services" of his eldest daughter by the wealthy Henry Dumas he readily agrees. On reaching puberty, Eileen is callously discarded and her younger sister, the ambitious Briony, seizes her chance for a shot at the good life and takes her place with the reluctant consent of her mother. She unfortunately becomes pregnant and with nowhere to turn, she accepts Isabel Dumas' offer to take the son as her own in exchange for Briony's silence, the house and a large allowance. Meeting and falling for Artful dodger type Tommy Lane changes things and using her windfall, they go into business opening their own bordello (not bad for a pair of teenagers...)
The rest of the book deals with Briony and her family as they go from strength to strength though the path is rocky, violent and controversial. Eileen never recovers from her stolen childhood and dies in childbirth leaving "madam" Briony to bring up her boys Daniel and Boysie (aka Ronnie and Reggie) with devastating consequences. Throughout this, she carries the burden of giving up her only son, but he is never far from her mind.
Quite an epic novel, it reads like a female Jeffrey Archer, the story spanning almost a century though the Great War is strangely omitted and the second glossed over. More historical references may have given it extra credibility and a better timescale I think. Some of the cockney dialogue is very cheesey and would make an Eastenders scriptwriter wince and the plot stretches credibility at times, but overall it's quite a good book and next time I'm stuck for a read at my mum's I'll check out her other Martina Coles. Just don't tell anyone....
Goodnight Lady, 22 Apr 2008
This was another masterpiece by Martina. I have not always read her books in order, but I came across this one the other day, the only one left that I had not read........ All of her books are gripping from the first page to the last. Goodnight Lady was a wonderful story set in the 1900's. Martina has a fantastic imagination and obviously does a great deal of research.
I would recommend Martina Cole's books to everybody, young, old, male or female. Keep up the good work Martina!!
Martina Cole Does It Again, 16 Oct 2007
The first Martina Cole book I read I thought was brilliant and could not be equalled yet alone beaten. But how wrong I was, I could not put this book down. The characters just came to life and I seriously did not want this book to end. Lots of twists and beautifully written, long may Martine Cole reign!!!! This book is denifinetly one of my all time favourites. To find a book as good as this will be a difficult task.
Loved it, 12 Oct 2007
I know I shouldn't enjoy Martina Cole so much - it is hardly highbrow literature, but her novels really are great escapism. I particularly liked this one - her characters are always compelling and sympathetic. I think I have read most of her novels now......oh well :-)
Absolutely brilliant...., 18 Jun 2007
What a book! I couldn't put it down from the moment that I started it. The way Cole describes her characters from the start draws you in. Briony, the main character, isdescribed in such a way that you feel for her through all her obsticles in life. My favourite character was Tommy, what a man, the wedding surprise made me cry!
The book is gripping throughout and I would recommend it to anyone. It includes everything a good book should: love, heartache, humour and a great ending. Cole's book keep me reading everytime and I applaud her for her contraversial topics.

not what you expect from Martina Cole, 02 Dec 2008
Best ever read for me, 11 Nov 2008
this book has just made me addicted to reading again after not having picked up a book for 10 years.Powerful story line and you feel for the characters, this book drew me to tears, fantastic read
a must read, unputdownable, 06 May 2008
I originaly read this story when it first come out but decided to read it again as I really enjoyed it the first time - I have to say it is still a excellent!

After hearing rave reviews about Martina Cole I decided to give this book ago and see what all the fuss was about and boy am I glad I did! From the first page you are plunged into a brutal world of murder, gangsters, prostitutes and battered wives.Being in a violent relationship myself for 3 years I identified with Susan and her world so much. This book gives such a accurate insight into what it's like being in a domestically violent relationship and leaves nothing out.Being brutally honest to the point where at times I had to put the book down to have a cry and get a grip on myself. The men in this story are so disgusting I'd challenge anybody who reads this book not to feel some sort of disgust or rage towards them.Brilliant characters that will make you laugh and cry, brilliant plot, totally gripping from start to finish I was reading it at every chance I got.Definitely one of my favorite books of all time,I would recomend this to anyone except maybe the faint hearted! I can't wait to read more from this author!
One of the best books i have read..........., 18 Jun 2008
I actually read this book a couple of years ago- was the first martina cole book I had read as it was recommended to me and I can honestly say I loved this book that much I now own each book of hers!
Compared to her other books this one is by far the best- my other two faves been the runaway and dangerous lady - her older books definitely been a lot better than her newer ones which I have to say I have found the last 3 quite awful and repetative!
Anyway this book was brilliant and I have read it more than once which isnt something i usually do with books , the story centres around Susan who has grown up with an abusive father and is looking for a way out - which is in the form of her husband -who turns out to be exactly the same!
This story really makes you appreciate your life and look at it and think "god im lucky" because some horrendous things happen to sue in this book and believe it or not they do happen in real life! All that keeps Susan going is her children - she wouldnt go on without them in my opinion!
I am a massive martina cole fan and I would rate this higher than 5 stars if I could as I found it brilliant! I hope the book she brings out this year will be better than the last 3 she has brought out!
Loved it!, 30 May 2008
This for me is classic Martina. I have read a fair few of her books, and this one was brilliant.
Its quite violent in places, but its a great story. Like has been mentioned in other reviews, the summary on the back of the book is a tad misleading, as the book is mostly about Susan, but nevertheless it really is a good book. Its not for the faint hearted!
I WAS WELL IMPRESSED WITH THIS BOOK, BUT.., 05 Apr 2008
I enjoyed this book so much that i decided to put cole on my list of favourite authors. However, she wasn`t there long because every book of hers that i read after that was like a re-run - loads of sex, violence, ill-gotten wealth, glamour, `gangsters`, drugs, prostitutes, beaten wives etc etc. You can only read the same stuff a couple of times before you get tired. I think it`s time cole either changed the record or put away the type writer for good.I give this book 5 stars as it deserves it - but she can`t expect to keep selling the same story under a different title and a different front cover.
'Unputtdownable'Gripping and powerfully written, 30 Mar 2008
This was my first ever Martina Cole book which my aunty borrowed my mum who passed it onto me as she said all the girls in work had read it, well i couldn't put it down, gritty and unpredictable a very enjoyable read I can assure you once you have read one of her books you will prob end up owning most of them!!

Brilliant *****, 19 May 2008
What a bloody brilliant book...i brought it as i wanted to read the book before i watched the TV film they made of it...and is now my favourite book of all time...i love everything Martina Cole writes but this is by far the best out of all so far...has a really gripping story line...only downfall being that is was a bit slow to start with but got going within a few chapters...the characters are either completley loveable or loathable...and gives us a bit of insight into what really happens behind bars...the only bad thing i have to say about Martina Cole is that she uses certain words far too much and sometimes can get a bit grating...her favourite two seem to be "proverbial" and "consensus" but thats her only faults...she is my favourtie author and even the less gripping books are still brilliant with a majic twist at the end that no one could foresee...so if you also love Martina Cole or even just enjoyed one or two of her books you will love this...!!!
Brill, 25 Apr 2008
It was a little slow in the begining but WOW!! This book is brill - There are some fantastic twists through out the book. This is a must read!
Slightly disappointed, 26 Mar 2007
This was my third Martina Cole book. I loved the Graft, I thought Closer was ok, but this one I really didnt enjoy that much. I am told that some of her other books are really brilliant, so I havent let this put me off.
I think overall the story line was quite good, I just found it wasn't gripping. I didnt find myself not putting it down. Normally I read a good book in a few days, but this took me well over a week to read it.
A fantastic Read, 15 Mar 2007
I was told by a friend to read this book and I am so glad that I took her advice.
On the strength of this book Martina is the best female crime writer in the business.
She is far better than Lyda La Plant and I wish this book was a TV series - it is like a X-rated Bad Girls.
I have read two fantastic books this year - THIS - and a novel by Garry Jackson called TILL DEATH US DO PART - both are classics and deserve to be best-sellers.
Martina makes me proud to be a women and has inspired me to write a book about my life as a glam model, lap dancer and TV extra.
GRIPPING & FAST MOVING, 23 Nov 2006
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As usual from Martina Cole, very gripping with lots of bad language, bad people and a fantastic humorous twist at the end. This one centres around Donna who doesn't realise she's married to a naughty boy. She soon has to wake up to all he's done (and it's bad !) and by the end of the book she's no longer the naïve innocent that she started out married life as. I don't know whether her description of `being inside' is accurate but if it is, it's a very frightening place.

Product Description
Leading an investigation into the neglect and abandonment of a number of young Grantley children throws DI Kate Burrows into contact with the most vile and repugnant of criminals. As a mother herself, Kate finds their crimes almost incomprehensible. And with the case becoming ever more sinister, she knows she needs to find answers quickly. Emotionally drained by the rigours of the investigation, it's a real struggle for Kate to find the energy to deal with the complex problems unfolding in her domestic life. Despite assurances to the contrary it seems Patrick Kelly, hardman and love of DI Burrows' life, is still firmly entrenched in the East End underworld. When a body turns up in Patrick's seedy Soho club it seems he has finally got in over his head and the only person in a position to help him is Kate. Set in familiar Cole territory of East End London, Broken is every bit as gritty and compelling as The Ladykiller. The story as it unfolds is gruesome, uncomfortable and peppered with violence but it is also carefully and thoroughly researched. Martina Cole knows what life in Grantley is and does not shy away from using the strong language of the street in addition to enough cockney rhyming slang to put any would-be pearly king to the test. A well-paced, gripping page-turner with strong, credible female characters, Broken definitely fits the unputdownable category. --Sarah Crawford

not what you expect from Martina Cole, 02 Dec 2008

Brutal, Gripping, Powerful, Loved It!, 28 Sep 2008

An ok book but NOT the best of Martina's, 12 May 2008
A GOOD START TO BOOK BUT TRAILS OFF LATER AND THOUGH IT MAY WELL BE TRUE TO LIFE THE STORY GETS A BIT GRIM AND DEPRESSING. THERE ARE NO "GOOD" CHARACTERS SO MAKES IT HARDER TO BECOME EMOTIONALLY INVOLVED. AN UNPREDICTIBLE READ IN PARTS WHICH I LIKE. I COULDN'T GUESS HOW IT WAS GOING TO FINISH AND SO, A FAIRLY ENJOYABLE READ. WORTH GETTING FROM LIBRARY AT LEAST!!!
Terrible, 19 Mar 2008
I have read a few of Martina coles books (Good night Lady, Two Women, Dangerous lady, Maura's Game, the runaway)so you could say i'm a fan, but this has to be the worst book she has wrote so far, I was extremley disappointed with this book it was boring and depressing all at the time, I really struggled to finish book not impressed in the slightest
Disappointing, 05 Jan 2008
Having enjoyed Cole's The Runaway and The Ladykiller, I had high hopes for Broken. While Cole is no literary genius, the other two books had been enjoyable page-turners with interesting characters, but having said that, they were still full of anachromisms and sloppy mistakes (a Gerry and the Pacemakers song is memorably credited to Freddie and the Dreamers in The Runaway, for example). Broken, however, is a mess. What begins as an interesting mystery of children disappearing, apparently being dumped by mothers who appear to be innocent of the crime, degenerates into a farce. The side story of Patric Kelly and Boris is tediius, and the ease with which Willy disposes of the Russian and his henchman is laughable. There are also incomplete sentences and poorly punctuated sections which opens up the question of what good Cole's proof reader/editor is. Also, the leading character Kate Burrows has degenerated from the feasible, likeable character of The Ladykiller into a two-dimentional, hard-nosed and yet overtly sentimental foul-mouthed thug. We are forever being reminded of how beautiul Kelly and Kate are, and how big a heart Willy has - pass the sick bag. Kate's mother is a boring cariceture of down-to-earth Irish "good sense", and Kate's daughter, who may have added some much needed complexity (as she did in The Ladykiller) has been all but written out and despatched to Australia. Also, there is way too much unbelievable and over-long dialogue, which demonstrates a lack of confidence in describing plot nuances by the author.
I have given the book two stars rather than one as the fist 200-or-s | | |
