About the struggles after the Korean war from a child's poin, 30 Sep 2002
If your looking for a book that will take you into another world, then this is the book. It's a well written book. I read it one sitting. Mia Has done a wonderful job capturing the reader. You almost feel like your there with the child and experiencing what the 60's and 70's were like after the Korean War. Also you get a better grip of what a struggle it has been for Women in Korean Society. There aren't many book out there anymore tht are well written like this one. Mia wrote this in English and then later translated into her native tongue. What a Amazing job!! I suggest this book to anyone, no matter your nationality!

Capture Korea in the 60's and 70's, 19 Sep 2002
This book is written well and draws you into a child's world. You almost feel like your there with the child. This book gives you a sense of what Korea was like after the Korean war. Also shows you the struggle women delt with during the 60's and 70's. She tell this story from a child's point of view. Mia has done a wonderful job of capturing the reader. I read the book in one sitting. I had plan to read only a couple chapters, but before I knew it, I was half way through the book and hoping the book would never end. There aren't many books out there today that leave you hungry for more.There aren't many well written books out on the market. Anyone can write, but it takes true talents like Mia's to write an excellent book. Mia is truely a gifted writer. She wrote this book in English first and then translated it into her own language later after the book was published. That is a amazing accomplishment!! It's a must read for anyone, no matter the nationality!

A superb and dazzling book., 07 Jul 1999
I first saw that House of the Winds was chosen as one of the best books on Asia published in 1998 and then later I read that it was also a finalist for the Independent Publisher Book Award in the multi-cultural fiction category. When I finally read the novel, I was simply stunned by the beauty of the language and the sharp and piercing observations. Not only is the novel beautifully written but it is also so uncommonly moving. House of the Winds transcends its Korean setting and I regard this book a work of great world literature.

House of the Winds is a beautifully written novel set in Korea. A friend of mine recommended it and I'm glad she did! The writer has obviously learned her craft well. Without question, the best and most moving novel I have read in a very long time.

A Moving Story Wonderfully Told, 17 Dec 1998
House of the Winds is a wonderful novel of Korea set mainly in the 1960's but its poetic truth transcends any one country or time period. It is beautifully written without an ounce of self-pity or attempt to impress us with Asian exotica. Mia Yun makes every word count and her descriptions make us deeply feel the happiness and sorrow of the characters. This is not the fortune-cookie fiction that sometimes passes as modern Asian or Asian-American literature. This is brilliant writing often with stunning and unexpected metaphors. The understated yet moving way the writer evokes the character Bright Bijou allows us to feel the sexual awakening as well as the crushing despair of a young farm girl even though she is so different from us.
