This highly acclaimed novel by Polish writer Stefan Zeromski was written in 1912 and subsequently made into an acclaimed film by Wierna Rzeka.

The action is set in Poland during the January Uprising from 1863 to 1865. It chronicles the story of the wounded Duke of Odrowaz who, having taken refuge, is nursed back to health by a young servant girl in charge of the manor house of her absent owners.

There, on his sickbed the novel unfolds with personal stories, triumphs, and tribulations in times of war.

This novel is set during the various uprisings in Poland. The writer describes in detail battle scenes and the invasions the Poles had to endure. It's a very political novel with a healthy dose of history and feminism. I dont believe that this is bedtime reading as it is very factual and descriptive. The Faithful River however is an enjoyable read, however perhaps not for the faint hearted.
