This is a SUPERB aid to the FRCA clinical viva - I was asked nothing that was not covered in the book, and some VIVA questions matched it exactly. As well as concise information, the book has excellent advice on answering the VIVA questions, catagorising answers etc. A must have!

Truly beautiful; perfection, 10 Sep 2008
LIke many (I'm sure), I have browsed & collected many bibles - there is particular comfort in reading about the experience of man with God & especially in a beautifully printed book.
No translation will ever be perfect, but the NIV (New International Version) seems a lovely balance of accuracy and lyrical beauty. Run a Google search (or check Wikipedia) & you will find much guidance on how it compares with others. A bit conservative, but this is God (& you are, probably, human). Personally, both the NIV & the ESV (English Standard Version) resonate the most with me.
Most of all, this particular edition is beautifully printed:
-- a wealth of interprative information in 20,000 study notes which are on the same page as the text; generally conservative / evangelical in intent, but (I think) balanced; much on history, context, guidance; much to learn from here
-- 100,000 verse cross-references; choose your favourite verse & allow these to take you on a journey across the text; again (wonderfully) on the same page as text
-- comprehensive book introductions, diagrams, maps, charts
-- world-class index to notes & concordance; & (new to NIV) index to topics
Most of all, it's the size of the book & the form of the text of this particular edition & volume: all of this is beautifully bound in soft leather (almost as good as my wife's shoes, she thinks!), clearly printed on paper which seems just right (around 2,350 pages), the words of Jesus in red, an indecribably lovely volume which you can hold in your hand & bring anywhere.
I really think you will love this book (or course) & this printing.

Good one, 18 Oct 2007
I have used this version daily since 1986. My copy of an earlier printing has stood up well to regular use. The notes are evangelical and I rarely find myself critical of them. They are a big help in understanding the text. If you want a NIV for study this is a very good one.

Excellent!, 12 Apr 2008
I actually bought this Bible as a present for my brother (who'll have the pleasure of removing the shrink wrap!). I already own the British Text version (Love Your NEIGHBOUR) but I bought this North American Text version (Love Your NEIGHBOR) for my brother who lives in the United States. TNIV is one of the most accurate and helpful translations in print. In particular, where a word is neuter in Hebrew or Greek, TNIV does NOT assume a male declension - as do most Bibles. For example, Hebrews 13 opens with the word "FILADELFIA", which describes a reciprocal, sibling-like affection. The NIV uses "Keep on loving each other as brothers", while its successor (TNIV) uses "Keep on loving one another as brothers and sisters". Any gender-specificity in the original Hebrew & Greek texts is, naturally, retained. For example, Proverbs 31:10 reads "A wife of noble character who can find? She is worth far more than rubies". It doesn't say a "SPOUSE" or "PARTNER" of noble character because in this instance the author is referring explicitly to wives. In the publisher's own words, TNIV is "recommended...for its clarity, accessibility and precision of meaning".
This edition is tastefully bound in neatly-stitched European leather and comes in a semi-transparent presentation box and weighs about 1800g. The Book itself is 'thumb indexed' and contains colour maps, study notes and a concordance. The words of Jesus appear in red lettering. Ten out of ten for presentation.
The best translation yet, 31 Dec 2006
Writing as a preacher it is good to be able to use a translation that speaks to everyone in contemporary English, which can be easily understood by young and old and by churched and unchurched.I congratulate the translation team and thank them for an extremely difficult job very well done.
I do not think it necessary to print the words of Jesus in red and am sorry that Zondervan felt it necessary to highlight that which needs no highlighting.
My only small criticism is the failure to comment on the issues surrounding the virgin birth; namely that the Greek word parthenon only appears in the Greek Septuagint Bible.
Nevertheless that does not decrease my appreciation of the scholarship that has gone into the Zondervan TNIV Study Bible.

The notes are adapted from the New International Study Bible so please refer to reviews of that Bible for further comments on the notes. To quote the introduction: " Doctrinally the Zondervan NASB Study Bible reflects traditional evangelical theology. Where editors were aware of significant differences of opinion on key passages or doctrines, they tried to follow an evenhanded approach by indicating those differences (eg. note on Rev 20:2)" The Bible text is the updated NASB so there are none of the archaic pronouns which marred pre-1995 editions of this translation.

The notes are adapted from the New International Study Bible so please refer to reviews of that Bible for further comments on the notes. To quote the introduction: " Doctrinally the Zondervan NASB Study Bible reflects traditional evangelical theology. Where editors were aware of significant differences of opinion on key passages or doctrines, they tried to follow an evenhanded approach by indicating those differences (eg. note on Rev 20:2)" The Bible text is the updated NASB so there are none of the archaic pronouns which marred pre-1995 editions of this translation.
... but it's NOT leather!, 12 Jun 2008
The best study Bible - but it's not leather! Zondervan's own web site gives the correct description of this binding:
"Italian Duo-Tone(tm) - Soft, supple, two-tone simulated leather."
