Boring - we've heard it all before, 20 Apr 2008
Yet another management book that takes what we already know, dresses it up and then sells it back to us. Nothing new, nothing original, nothing worth paying for. Give it a miss!
Lead better, 11 Feb 2008
Great stuff from Jo Owen. I've always tried to play the straight man with my guys. If they're bad, I will quite literally lead them round the office by their nose, over desks and chairs, for five minutes or so to show them what happens to muppets. However if they come up with the goods, they get tossed a sweetener - Burtons voucher, golf brolley etc. Jo Owen gives me something to add to my arsenal. We've now started on a more 'human relations' route in the team, with feedback sessions on 'how does that make you feel' and 'how to value yourself and your colleagues'. I might think it's a lot of old cobblers myself, but if it keeps the troops happy, I'm happy.
A cracking book, 22 Jul 2007
This book is fantastic. A real eye-opener. It says obvious things when you read it, but you'd never think of it otherwise. A cracking read, and should be a must for anyone responsible for a team.
In My Top Three, 26 Aug 2006
I've read enough management books to fill an MBA course, but this is head and shoulders above most of them, and is easily one to the top three I've managed to finish. If you're wondering how to motivate a team, how to stay positive and how to inspire you'll find common sense answers here. It will give you the confidence and understanding that while we can't all be Winston Churchill, Alex Ferguson or Billy Graham, we can still lead effectively and powerfully in our own way.
There's not many books, never mind business books, that I finish and immeadiately want to start again, but this is one of them. It's easy to read, employs an enjoyable dry wit and knocks the galloping balderdash of so many American development gurus into a cocked hat. Read and enjoy.
Astonishing. Really., 30 Jun 2006
I've read just about every business book there is. I love them. This book, however, stands out as one that I would totally recommend to anyone in a management postion - or anyone who wants to be there. Practical advice abounds, as does humour. It's very honest about the challenges of work, of leading a team and the snippets of wisdom are priceless. Put it like this - I've been buying stuff on amazon for years and this is the first review i think I've written! I've just started a job leading a small team and this book is helping me cope with all the new challenges it brings. Buy it.

Very useful..., 03 Nov 2008
Useful and practical advice by a man who knows his business inside out. Well written and a pleasure to read, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in retailing. brilliant brilliant brilliant, 19 Jun 2008
If you can only afford one book to help you with your retail business - GET THIS ONE!
I have used it as a basis for training days with my staff and these have been amongst the most successful we have run in 4 years. It has helped to re-energise and re-focus all our efforts, so that everyone knows - and buys into - where we are going and how we will get there. I shall be buying a copy for each one of my permanent staff team! very interesting reading, 12 Jul 2007
My girlfriend and I have opened up a clothes store recently and are working hard to let it survive the first few difficult years. Although this book gives many tips for bigger stores, I have found great insights and tips that make it valuable for us to try and stay ahead of the competion. For team members and managers in any job, anywhere.., 07 Mar 2006
I purchased this book after being offered a managerial role in retail. Knowing little about the industry, I was looking for a book that could tell me everything... from shop floor to staffing. This book not only taught me all I needed to know but gave me confidence and passion to go ahead and be a great team member. I made notes all over it as by page 2 I knew I wasn´t going to be passing it on to anyone else! Easy reference, interesting to read - I took it on holiday - excellent section on people management and lots of information and advice that would apply to most office jobs, work teams and managers everywhere, not just in the retail industry. Also written by a normal guy who has had a long and successful career in retail, not a stuffy professor with a PhD. Thoroughly recommended.
If you're in a hurry, this is for you!, 22 Dec 2005
I bought this just as we were opening our first shop. It's quick to read, makes sense and is easy to remember. Even so, I still have it by the bed and go back to it when I need some new ideas. I just wish there was a number 2 version with more detail. Loved it.

Surely it can't get any better?!, 26 Jul 2007
After reading this book, you are left with the feeling that the sky is the limit - nothing but your own self doubt and delusions stand in your way. If Charlie can do it, why can't I? As with the rest of the 'Instant' series, Brad lays it all bare with simple to understand and use real life, cast iron strategies that have been shown to work time and time again. This book is crammed with page after page after page of real life tips and strategies which I guess can turn any business into a profit making super machine in simple no nonsense steps. Not Theory laden or dry to read - just easy to digest and more importantly, quick to implement tips honed from real life the best strategies around the world.

Improve your Cashflow NOW, 12 Jul 2006
Too many of the businesspeople I've come across say they've tried everything they know to improve cashflow in their business. Basically they run out of ideas and give up. Or place all their efforts into one or two ideas oblivious to all the other opportunities for cashflow. This book contains 100s of ideas to improve cashflow in 5 different areas of your business (did you even know there were 5 areas to work on?). Each idea is rated as to its expected effectiveness. Never be short of cashflow ideas again...

If ever there was a company to admire Ramseys would be it, 12 Aug 2008
Marketing Judo is something most small businesses could do with. How do you fancy striking up relationships that will being in loads of positive press and cost you nearly next to nothing? Well that is marketing judo!
The book is very easy to read and digest and I read the book in 3 days (pausing to do other things of course). Clearly these guys know what they are talking about.
An inspiring book I can recommend for those looking for something a bit more than just an autobiography. Practical and punchy this book is worth every penny.
Makes you see your business differently, 26 Jan 2005
We are a start-up team in retail. Having seen a Richardson live presentation of Marketing Judo we changed our thinking. His, and Barnes', approach really does show you how to establish and then exploit a niche for yourself. Sure the judo thing is just a neat metaphor but the ideas behind it are truly inspirational. This book is an essential purchase for all start-up businesses, especially those in leisure and retail. Good stuff indeed.
Marketing Judo - it worked for BUPA Hospital Washington!, 04 May 2004
This is an excellent book full of practical wisdom for marketing a business on a small budget. These guys really talk from experience, having started small with one Harry Ramsden's restaurant in Yorkshire, and building it into a worldwide group. At times they were short of big budgets, so learned to use Marketing Judo - using the strengths of competitors, doing the unexpected, and working with partners, to build their business profitably. There are lots of examples of how to get amazing publicity without spending huge amounts, but this book is about much more than just that. There are some great bits about how you need the right culture and product from the bottom up before you can begin to just promote something that's flawed in the first place. And it can work in big organisations too. BUPA Hospital Washington operates near Newcastle, and is a new small hospital competing against an established larger competitor. Using similar techniques to those explored in Marketing Judo, we've doubled awareness of our hospital in Newcastle, and grown our patient numbers from Newcastle by 30%. Although the book is most relevant to the restaurant business the authors know so well, it can be applied easily in any service sector. An entertaining, educational and valuable read - highly recommended!
Down to earth, 25 Apr 2004
What a refreshing change to read something practical and really helpful toa start up business. It only took me two hours to read and gave me lots ofnew ideas. Probably not right for self important academic pompous socalled professionals.
Throw this one away, 16 Mar 2004
One thin metaphor about marketing being like judo won't sustain even a short book like this. It should have been much better - the authors have a terrific track record in turning around Harry Ramsden's. Maybe a straight telling of that business story would have been more insightful and interesting.

One thin metaphor about marketing being like judo won't sustain even a short book like this. It should have been much better - the authors have a terrific track record in turning around Harry Ramsden's. Maybe a straight telling of that business story would have been more insightful and interesting.
Marketing made simpler , 11 Jul 2008
I found this book a very easy read. I studied marketing over a decade ago and now face the prospect of launching a new product into a new market in a new country. It has given me a clear roadmap on what I want to do. The book, will have practical examples through out it and at the end I thought "why didnt I think of this?" There's no marketing speak, no BS bingo, just simple clear language.
Marketing made easy, 25 Jul 2007
This book really focuses on what's important when trying to market an existing product because it provides a simple model that anyone can read and understand. If you are a marketer already then this is a good reminder of how to do it properly; but if you are not, then you can ask some probing questions when your marketing collegues talk about a go-to-market strategy.

Instant Cashflow, 14 Jan 2006
Wow - this book changed my life...so simple yet so powerful! I highly recommend Instant Cashflow to those looking to get more from their business!
Instant Cashflow, 13 Jan 2006
A great insight into how to alter you mindset and think about what you are doing within your business, why you are doing it and how can this be improved. The book provides many tips and strategies through which that all important bottom line figure can be maximised.
Win customers by caring, 07 Apr 2008
I'm not the fastest of readers, but at around 200 pages, I started and finished in the same day. It was a refreshing read and made so much sense. With the use of problem maps to understand the buyers motivations, Grant's sales philosophy encourages the small business to focus on the customer and win clients by caring - not by selling. I whole heartedly agree with Grant's approach.
A sales approach for today's environment, 21 Mar 2008
I first heard Grant speak at a networking event and was struck by the eminent common sense of what he had to say. This book clearly and simply explains why all the conventional sales approaches are doomed to failure and are quite unsuitable for today's environment. If you run your own business and focus on relationships, integrity, quality and doing the best for your customer, Grant's approach will resonate fully with you. It builds upon those foundations and provides you with the insights and tools to improve your effectiveness and grow your business. This is way everyone will be approaching sales in the future, so get ahead of the game now.
An excellent book on sales, 04 Dec 2007
The author is a self effacing man who runs his own succesful small business.
If you run your own small business and would like more sales then buy Grant's book.
You will be delighted, I was.
At last someone has writen a good book for business, 27 Oct 2007
After years of reading books on strategic planning, market planning and growing a small business, I have found that this book stands head and shoulders above all the others. Grant has succeeded in writing a down to earth, common sense and very practical guide. This is probably one of the best and most usable business books I have read this year. Having been in business for over 20 years and noticed a terrific change in the landscape over that time, I can vouch that Grant hits the nail on the head with his vision, knowledge and recommendations. Overall a perfect 'How To' business texbook that I know I'll keep close at hand.

Marketing Book of 2008 , 16 Aug 2008
"The moment that organisations lose their personality is when their employees become "people" rather than individuals...".
As many of my readers and friends know. I'm very much in touch with the "human side of business", especially forming a connection with people. Revealing, the honest, sincere and human side of your business to your customers has repeatedly proved to be a good thing. It's the key to delighting them and making sure they stay with us for a very long time.
Rohit Bhargava as an author is right up there with the likes of Seth Godin and Guy Kawasaki. Why? Because he tells it like it is. Jargon is left at the door and the book uses great worldwide examples of excellent personality branding. It's nice to see an American author who shows a refreshing awareness that we all don't live in America!
Wow. I must admit, Rohit actually had me at "hello" with this book. The book brings together, my own personal experiences of business differentiation. Learning, from companies such as Moo and Innocent Drinks (Also mentioned in the book). Rohit did an excellent job of drawing me in with his great writing style and a clear passion for the subject.
Throughout the book he provides many examples of businesses which are successfully using the techniques within the book. The case studies were almost enough to sell me the book alone. However, learning about each technique and then being given an interesting and detailed example of how each idea can be implemented in real life was fantastic. It was was great to see Steve, Hugh and the Blue Monster also getting a mention - Rock On!
Personality Not Included successfully leads the reader through the process of building a company personality. Rohit's approach impressed me in a number of ways. Firstly he outlined all the key elements. I especially liked his "UAT Filter"- the three core qualities of a company personality:
Unique
Authentic
Talkable
Spot on. Secondly, he presented great examples from several companies for each element.
As I finished reading Part 1, Rohit did something that many marketing writers do not usually do. He wrote a "Part 2. The second part of the book focuses on how to put the discussion in Part 1 into action. To further guide the reader through the process, Rohit provides a number of tools and frameworks to help. The book is broken down into the following chapters:
Part One
Chapter 1 - Faceless used to work because big meant credible. This is no longer true
Chapter 2 - Accidental spokespeople are speaking for your brand - Embrace them
Chapter 3 - Uniqueness plus Authenticity plus Talkability equals personality. Use the UAT Filter
Chapter 4 - Backstories establish a foundation of credibility. You need onq.
Chapter 5 - Fear of change leads to barriers. Finding your authority overcomes them
Chapter 6 - Personality moments are everywhere and unexpected, but you must spot them
Part Two - (Putting Personality into Action)
* New Styles of Marketing (Ten Techniques are Described in Detail)
* Taking Theory Further (Tools and Guides to Accompany Chapters 1 - 6)
The key theme from the first half of the book is that personality matters, because it is the element of your brand that inspires loyalty more than any product feature or element of your service ever can.
Rohit reminds the reader, that consumers aren't just buying a product or service from you. They are buying "into" a whole experience. If they find the experience positive, they are very likely to purchase again, and/or recommend your business to others. As a text book, Personality not Included could also be used to boost your own "Personal Branding".
If you love Seth Godin, or Guy Kawasaki then you'll love Rohit Bhargava. If you are looking for a refreshing and up-to-the-minute business read, then you could do no better.
To conclude, Bhargava's marketing experiences with the world's leading companies has produced the definitive book that explains "Personality Branding", in a practical, understandable and actionable way. I can't recommend this book highly enough for any entrepreneur, business person, or anyone who wants to better understand how `personality' can impact a business.
Marketing's New Rock Star?, 11 Jun 2008
An innovative book in so many ways - the structure; the layout; the design; the marketing -- all uber innovative. But what really counts is the content - and Rohit just nails it.
Rohit Bhargava is right up there with the likes of Seth Godin and Guy Kawasaki. Why? Because he tells it like it is. There's no jargonistic BS in this book. Just plenty of (super cool) examples and global ones at that - Rohit shows a refreshing awareness that we don't all live in the USA!
The whole of Part Two is devoted to what to do with the revelations laid out in Part One. Yes - read this book and Rohit will tell you what to do for your business (though, to be honest I already had a page full of notes about things to do/improvements to make/nuggets to share from each of the chapters in part one as they unfolded - that's how enlightening it is).
This book isn't just for marketers. It isn't just for trendy start-ups. It is for any business - from solopreneurs through to blue chip. It is also relevant to anyone in any position in the work place - anyone who wants to make a difference that is.
If you love Seth Godin, or Guy Kawasaki then you'll love Rohit Bhargava. If you've no idea who any of these people are, but are looking for a refreshing and up-to-the-minute business read, then you could do no better. You won't be able to resist taking action during and after this one.

Misleading feedback, 30 Jun 2007
Strange how all the Brad Sugars titles are reviewed by Action Coach members, don't take my word for it, take the reviewer's name & action coach & do a search on google.
Bit poor really! Really goes against what the whole Amazon feedback form is all about!
Something's Fishy, 26 Jun 2007
Ever wondered why all the initial, highly-positive reviews of this tome occurred within a fortnight of each other ... and why they were virtually all anonymous?
Hmmm, perhaps Peter Knight's Mommy and Daddy thought his career required a boost!?
Cynical? Moi?
Simplicity itself!, 11 Jun 2005
I read this book from cover to cover over a single weekend. It is clear, insightful, inspiring and a pleasure to read. You will go into work brimming with ideas. Buy it!!!
It really is easy., 16 Jun 2004
HEMP was recommended to me by a colleague. I've read a few marketing made simple books before that just made me more confused. This book is different. Making a Highly Effective Marketing Plan for your business really is easy. It just needed someone to get rid of the smoke and mirrors.
