Not very castellano, 16 Jul 2007
Book is a good on getting refresh on verbs but I found there quite a many "errors" (not really errors but weird way of putting sentence together, looked like it was translated directly from English. I am not native English speaker so I spotted those). There was sentences is Spanish that you wouldn't say in castellano perhaps something that is common in Latin America.
IMHO If you want to learn castellano find some book written by Spanish but if you just want to play around verbs and get some refresh on Spanish I think this is ok.
One part of an excellent 3-book set., 14 Mar 2007
I also have the other two books in this series, 'Spanish Verb Tenses' and 'Spanish Prepositions & Pronouns'. The three together form a really first class set. This book, covering grammar, unavoidably duplicates considerable amounts of the other two but I wouldn't dissuade you from getting this one if you already have either or both of the others. Buy all three.
The tuition and exercises are presented clearly and in well structured form. There are answers to the questions in the back of the books. TIP! Don't do the exercises on the pages provided for your answers! I did - in pencil, fortunately - and spent ages rubbing out my answers when I realised I wanted to revise/recap. I would have needed an ocean of Tippex if I'd done them in ink.
No: do the tests on loose sheets or your pc. The answer pages in the back are perforated. This is very handy [other publishers note - do the same] because it means you can tear them all out, put them in a folder and avoid endless flipping back and forth between questions and answers. If you do your exercises on loose sheets, you can file them with the answer pages and monitor how well you're progressing.
I like the large format, too. It has enabled the publisher to lay the text out in a clear and logical way. The Oxford U.P. books are good, but the small format leads to a very dense and cramped presentation. These books are far superior in that respect.
I thoroughly recommend them.
EXCELLENT , 02 Dec 2006
I FIND THIS BOOK EXCELLENT FOR ALL THE LISTS OF VOCABULARY ...IT IS NICE TO REFRESH ON THE VOCABULARY SIDE OF THINGS AT TIMES AND THIS BOOK IS NICE AND STEADY.
I HAVE "SPANISH VERB" AND "PRONOUN AND PREPOSITIONS" AND FIND THEM ALL VERY USEFUL TO REFER BACK TO.
ALSO IF DOING THE EXERCISES IN THESE BOOKS USE AN A4 WRITING PAD THEN YOU CAN USE THE BOOKS OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
Another learner, 05 Aug 2006
My level of Spanish is advanced -not fluent by any means- and I can say that this is a superbly laid out book from start to finish both for the complete beginner and the advanced student. However, I would suggest that if you're looking to learn Spanish make sure this is not your sole teacher. As you would expect it is full of grammar exercises which could become tiresome if like me you prefer to speak the language. But I divulge.. For what it is -a grammar book- it's very good indeed.
Fantastic!, 02 Feb 2005
This book is so good. The grammar points are explained very well and not in a 1,000 words, just enough for us to get the most of it. Plenty of exercises put the lessons in practice and when they are all done the lesson is understood and can be applied easily. Moreover a lot of vocabulary is provided as well, so it is not a boring grammar book! This book is perfect for poeple who want to master Spanish or just to catch the key feature of the grammar.

A VERY USEFUL BOOK TO KEEP REFERRING BACK TO.
WORTH THE MONEY Another superb addition to the practice makes perfect series, 20 May 2008
Having struggled at learning Spanish for a few years, and not being able to devote a huge amount of time to it, it's important to make the most of the chances I do get.
The practice makes perfect series is ideal - you get loads of practice, varied exercises, and excellent translation sections, practicing translating a decent sized bit of text which is really helpful.
Pronouns and prepositions are ideally suited to this format, as there are so many different rules and ways to use these items that the only way to learn them is to get practice in doing so.
Highly recommended. Fantastic revision book for any serious Spanish student!, 25 Sep 2005
I was a first-year uni student doing a joint-honours degree and one of the subjects I majored in was Spanish, although I was really doing it ab-initio (meaning I had to start Spanish from scratch) because I have never done Spanish before at A Level. I bought this book together with the other book in this series "SPANISH PRONOUNS AND PREPOSITIONS" at the Borders bookshop in York. I have flipped through some other Spanish practice exercise books on the market, but I found many of them were either too difficult or don't provide enough exercises. It really depends on what type of study style you prefer. If you are the type who can just read and memorise a couple of textbooks to get yourself through your Spanish exams, then perhaps you don't need this book that much. I am nothing like that. I dislike reading/memorizing from texts and prefer learning by working through loads of revision exercises. This book suited my purposes to a T. In fact, I admit I was quite a lazy student in the beginning. I'd attend classes regularly but would never do much homework or self-study after classes. When the exams were approaching, I started worrying about how I'm going to revise all those things I've learnt in class in such a short time. This book was an absolute life-saver. One month before the Spanish exams, I made sure I sat down for at least 1 to 2 hours each day working dilligently at all of the exercises in these 2 books. By the time of the exam, I had, needless to say, already gone through ALL the questions in these 2 books and voila! I ended up getting a class 2:1 grade for my Spanish at the end of my first-year in Uni! supercharge your spanish, 19 Jun 2004
Spanish Pronouns and Preposition is an excellent learning resource for students of spanish at any level, and this along with the companion verb book are amongst the most useful spanish books you can find, i would highly recommend the purchase of both. The books are workbook style, and are very well constructed, each chapter deals with an idividual area, introducing each new idea clearly and concisely and then an excericise to prcatice the new knowledge, quite often there are some interesting little features of the excercises which really help to emphasise the point. The book serves well as an accompaniment to a course or as a stand alone teaching guide, and is very clear especially as regards the grammar, the voise of an experinced teacher shines through. it is possible to approach this book from start to finish, although it is also possible to pick out individual chapters as needed. This book feels very complete, and is one of the most complete guides to the mechanics underlying the spanish language. Another winner, 15 Jun 2004
I bought this book, already owning "Practice makes perfect: Spanish verb tenses" and both books are of equally high value. Pronouns are amongst the key elements to conversational Spanish and knowledge of pronouns is crucial to Spanish sentance construction! Amongst many other things, they enable talking without constant repetition (I saw the food, then I ate the food but I didn't like the food because the food was bad etc...). As with my previous purchace, this book helps to explain the "rules" in a clear and logical way, helping the reader to gain a detailed understanding of the different sets of pronouns and how they feature in converrsation. Each new rule is explained simply with many accompanying excersizes to assist memorization and the learning curve is set at a consistant pace. For those looking for a precise breakdown of Pronouns and prepositions and how each device is incorporated into everyday language, get this. Don't be put off by the seemingly specific nature of the book if you are new to the Spanish. Learning the underlying structure of Spanish has been a great way to start learning, much more beneficial than the "starter guides" that are available, which seem to tend towards the "Una cervesa por favor", without helping the student to understand what it is that they are saying. I have only been learning Spanish for four months and between this book, "PmP: Verb Tenses" and a pocket dictionary, I feel that I am progressing at a consistant rate and have no major questions that this combination of books isn't able to address. BUY IT!

The best..., 13 Jul 2008
This is THE French dictionary to have. Don't bother with anything smaller. Extremely well organised, it will always have the answer for those tricky little usages where a lesser dictionary could have you making a fool of yourself.
I see there's an new, 30th anniversary, edition out. I'm sure it'll be even better - but I'll be sticking with this one for a few years yet!
AMAZING!, 08 Sep 2007
I am doing A Level French, and this dictionary was recommended to me at the beginning of my AS Level course.
The dictionary is very comprehensive, and excellently laid out. When looking up words, they are often placed in common phrases, which makes it very easy to use. I find that the essay phrases which divide the french-english from the english-french sections are paricularly useful in helping me to raise the level of my language.
Having used this book often during the past year, I can find no faults, and am sure it will be of great use to me in the future.
Excellent, but VERY big!, 22 Jan 2007
This is an excellent dictionary.
Very comprehensive, and the font, colour scheme & general presentation make it easy to find the word or expression you are looking for, and are attractive.
One warning though - this is a VERY large book; check the dimensions shown in the description before ordering! It will take up a large space on your shelf and will probably be too large to carry to & from college or on your travels. You may need a pocket dictionary as well, or go for the concise version of this one (which appears to be an excellent dictionary too).
so much better than Oxford Hachette !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, 07 Aug 2006
This dictionary is the finest French dictionary so far. The vocabulary is up-to-date, there are lots of examples and the font is eye-friendly. French is my third language, Polish being the first, but I still look into this dictionary for English translations rather that search French-Polish-French dictionaries because Collins is more thorough. Compared to Oxford Hachette which I also have this one is far better in grasping the modern French and I definitely choose Collins over Oxford, or any other FR-En dictionary for that matter

Highly recommended, 19 Aug 2008
Can't recommend this enough, if you can learn the verbs you can master the language. Easy to find verbs in all the tenses, handy little tips and explanations. Wish I'd had this when I did my GCSE, would have made studying easier. It comes with a CD that has drills and tests. If you are learning the language, this is a good start.

This book is truly the bible if you are studying Spanish. Not just verbs, great exercises and tips at the back. An absolute must for students of Spanish!!!

I've owned this book for 3 years now., 06 Oct 2005
And I never go to Spain without it in my luggage! I know enough to leave behind the dictionary more often than not, but not this book. It's the most useful of all the titles that I've bought to help me with my studies. It's well-thumbed and getting dog-eared, which shows just how much it is used. Everyone I've come across in class who possesses this 501 Spanish Verb book says the same, and I've never seen one in immaculate condition (so watch out if you're buying secondhand!) This is a comprehensive list of verbs, set out simply for easy reference, with understandable explanations for the meaning of each tense covered. Colloquial expressions used with each verb are covered. Maybe it's just that it suits my style of learning but if that were the case then I don't think I'd find so many others carrying it about - it's pretty bulky and heavy for a paperback! I really like this book!

Bought for OU Language Course 2008, 30 Sep 2008
I bought this alongside the Spanish Grammar book as they are both set books for the OU course. High St book shops are a lot more expensive,I saved £5.00!! Both books are set out in a really easy & logical format.
Highly recommended Not very castellano, 16 Jul 2007
EXCELLENT, 26 Oct 2008
I PURCHASED THIS BOOK ALONG WITH THE SPANISH VERBS AND THEY ARE EXCELLENT BOOKS.
I USE AN A4 WRITING PAD TO WRITE MY ANSWERS TO THE EXERCISES THAT WAY THE BOOK CAN BE USED OVER AND OVER AGAIN.
BUY IT!

We were given this dictionary at an Open Day at Harper Collins. And thank goodness we were. Its an excellent dictionary with colourful text. It has great examples of how to use each word. The central section includes bits about verbs, days of the week etc. so its more than just a dictionary. It also links to some things on the internet.
Quality keeps on improving!, 18 Jun 2007
I have a copy of a previous edition of this 'easy learning' dictionary and a friend has the penultimate one to this latest copy. As such, I feel well-versed to comment...
This new release is excellent. My wife and I, both in our 50's, are learning the language and we find this dictionary more than just a resource for looking up the meaning of words. It is a big help to us with our verb tables, especially the tenses and gives good grammatical breakdowns on many aspects of the language.
Perhaps if there was more help with pronounciations, it could claim to be a language course in one book. But that aside, it is very, very, good value and we both love referring to it at every opportunity. Definitely five stars from us!

I am currently doing a intermediate level of italian but find it always useful to remember the key verbs. I have used a lot of italian books in order to understand italian and this one explains and does what it says ''drills'' those verbs into your mind with a good set of exercises. A well organized easy to understand book perfect for beginners of Italian! I would seriously recommend it.
Watch out for errors, 19 Jan 2008
I like these series of books. I have used the French one before.
They have helped me improve my grammar retention. However, I have got to the section on -ire verbs (Pg. 21) and have found it lacking in accuracy. Four of the standard -ire verbs have an inaccurate or misleading English meaning. For example avvertire is described as meaning "to announce". It actually means "to warn". In addition, other verbs are described as being standard -ire verbs but are not. Benedire for example, is an irregular verb even in the present tense.
Will post more feedback if it gets better.
Brilliant!!, 27 Nov 2007
This is a very good book. I used this shortly after finishing the 'Michel Thomas series' and it strengthened my ability to conjugate verbs enormously. It also gives help on a lot of the important irregular verbs that Italian has. I really do recommend this book, especially at this price.
Note: This book is not intended for any other area of Italian grammar other than VERBS!!! As the title suggests. If you want in depth grammar help, buy `Italian grammar drills'.
Great for Revision and New Work, 08 Feb 2003
I have found Italian Verb Drills invaluable. It has been excellent both in learning new work - verb endings, different tenses, etc, and also for revisiting and revising. The book is clearly laid out and the answer section enables one to check work at the end, or during the exercise to make sure one has the right idea. I would recommend it to anyone taking up Italian.
Italian Verb Drills, 28 Apr 2002
Overall, this book is very informative and relatively good value for money. However, its biggest flaw in my opinion is that it does not explain the grammar as much as I had hoped. I would've liked more examples of the different tenses and pronoun usage, particularly reflexive pronouns and impersonal pronouns such as si. For anyone that is not too well educated in English Grammar, (the book goes into all kinds of tenses)I would suggest buying this book and also a very comprehensive English Grammar guide. Having said that, this book is a valuable resource for learning verbs, particularly in their infinitive form. I use this book in conjunction with other Italian books and Internet research, so don't expect it to stand alone as a means of helping you learn Italian.

The Bible, 31 Jul 2007
This book is truly the bible if you are studying Spanish. Not just verbs, great exercises and tips at the back. An absolute must for students of Spanish!!!
Spanish homework, 24 Nov 2006
I am learning Spanish at college and I could not have managed my homework without this book of verbs - a great book for anyone who needs to conjugate verbs (with all tenses made very clear).
genius, 20 Aug 2006
i love this book, i used it for everything i ever wrote while studying spanish Alevel, and used the equivalent french 501 just as much.
kendris and kendris were legend amoungst my fellow language learners..what would we of done without them?
Fabulous dictionary for any age learning French but will appeal to school pupils too !, 19 Nov 2008

Excellent dictionary; better than Collins and cheaper too!, 12 Nov 2008
I bought this dictionary without really assessing the market because I trusted an Oxford dictionary to be the best. Since then I have used the equivilant Collins-Robert (CR) dictionary in school, and while that in itself is very good, I'm still glad that I bought Oxford-Hachette. The typeface is clear, it has a vast array of sample letters, bills, contracts etc. in the middle section to assist people such as students who are going to live in France, and most importantly it has a HUGE range of vocabulary. Despite being cheaper than CR, it actually appears thicker, and it also comes with an accurate pronunciation CD-ROM. There isn't much to choose between them in terms of vocab, but I'd choose Oxford-Hachette over Collins-Robert simply because of the many helpful extras and it being a bit cheaper.
serious business, 05 Oct 2008
this is huge big heavy dictionary with everything you need! in this case size matters for those who study languages, a smaller dictionary or a conscise version is insufficient. you will be pleased with what this dictinary offers and there is also a cd inside to aid you. it's the real deal.
Best dictionary you can get!, 13 Nov 2005
This is by far the best english-french dictionary you wil find. You will never want to replace it. Highly recommended!
A Typeface to Enjoy, 05 Nov 2001
Oxford have topped the French-English dictionary charts with this latest offering. At last, a publisher has given some thought to we ageing profs who have to use bi-lingual dictionaries in our work. The font of the typeface is actually readable. It must be a first. Another great idea is a grey printed tab for each letter of the alphabet which acts as a fast way into the dictionary without cretaing a tear-point like the old cut-out thumb indices. An interesting by-product is that at a glance you can see which letter of the alphabet is the most common first letter for French words. What else do I like? Ah, yes the panel inserts with greater background info on modal auxiliaries, meaurement, time etc. What haven't they done? Still no translation into English of what the verb parts mean in the beautifully clear verb tables at the back. Then again I don't know a grammar book or a dictionary that has realised how useful this would be to learners. When will a publisher think of this? que il eut ete aime Five out of five for Oxford Hachette.
