A must have book, 30 Aug 2007
I love it! The children in my class love it!
It is full of literacy starters and games to get children thinking. It fits really well with the Ros Wilson 2020 / Big Writing and the Literacy Hour.
I wouldn't be without it.
A must for any teacher!, 23 Jun 2007
I have Jumpstart for over 3 years now and it has been invaluable in my Literacy planning. The games are split into sections, some are quick, others need more time - but all of the games are wonderful. My class has several firm favourites, and I have been particularly happy with the spelling games, of which many are now being played at the children's home whilst learning their spellings for the week. Jumpstart games can be applied to any year group and I would recommend it to any Teacher.
A good starting point, 03 Apr 2007
I've used a few of the activities in this book 'as they stand' and they have worked very well with my Y7-Y8 classes who are about Level 2 - Level 4.
I don't feel it is something you could refer to as an emergency 10 minutes before the lesson starts. I have to either incorporate the activities into schemes of work or refer to it the night before/morning.
Covers all range of literacy activities and is an excellent resource in that respect.
Handy for the classroom, 28 Nov 2006
This has been a great classroom tool. It is easy read and has some great ideas. Some of them you may have already thought of, but on those rainy days when your brain just isn't working, it's great to be able to flip through the pages and find an inspiring starter. Or, in some cases the inspiration for a greta lessons; there are some lovely writing workshop ideas included. Great for 7-14's. A must have for every teachers tool box.
Thoroughly Useful!, 22 Feb 2005
Suitable for upper KS2 and secondary level, this is a great collection of literacy starters and warm-up activites. Many of the activities and games could be adapted for KS1 and lower junior. Corbett covers virtually every aspect of sentence structure and language use in this gem. He is an inspiring writer and his ideas have really livened up the start of literacy lessons in my year 5 class. Highly recommended!

Usefull and good problem with the quality of the paper, 01 Sep 2008
I buy this book based in the advise of a friend that is an english teacher and the reviews that I read from amazon uk and amozon US. the book is very usefull for me. I never learn english from Class I learn english from HBO and Cinemax. Because of this I have a lot of problems with my grammar, I have quite a good vocabulary and my pronuntiation is pretty well, bt when I am writing... The problems appear this book help me a lot with that the study guide make me realize witch are my major mistakes and the cd is also pretty good. I recomend this book to all the people that think that they know enough english to not take classes again or for those who already take it but need an extra help in grammar, easy to follow and very clear. The only but is the quality of the paper... Is not bad, quite the opposite, too good, so if you are doing the book by your own ou will find almost imposible to erase in the pages, be carfull on that, from the rest... you will love it.
Excellent Grammar Book, 14 Apr 2008
Excellent intermediate grammar book with simple explanations / examples and exercises. Great for teachers and sudents!
Dangerous. It can make you waste years of your life., 03 Mar 2007
I've been studying English for the most part of my life and I've always be frustrated with English grammar. I thought that English grammar had no clear-cut rules and, therefore, was difficult to explain and understand. I was wrong.
The problem wasn't English grammar. The problem is this book (that I've been using all my life). This book has confuse explanations and Raymond Murphy knows English but he doesn't know which are the rules and how to explain them.
Of course, English grammar is hard (because there are so many rules) but it is easy to understand IF you read the RIGHT book. I recommend you Swan's Basic English Usage. If you want to know how to use English, please buy it. You won't be disappointed.
But don't buy "English Grammar in Use". I have wasted whole years of my life because of this book. If you don't want to do that, please skip this book. It deserves -10 stars.
The Best!, 21 Jul 2006
After 20 years of teaching EFL I have to say, this is probably the best grammar book for intermediate students. Clear, concise, yet comprehensive, it doesn't leave anything to chance, giving and explaining alternative answers - and you can be completely confident that you're teaching the 'correct' grammar - which sadly isn't so for all grammar books.
One of the best grammar books I ever had., 21 Sep 2004
Having aproximately 30 books of English Grammar, this is on of the best, I learned English on this one. After seen this brillian new version in colour and CDROM, I bought it and it is better than ever. This is one of the starts in my collection, simple, practical , with theory and exercises what else can we ask? Covers all the basic aspects of English grammar in different chapters, well presented, organized and simple to understand.

Totally indispensable for TEFL teachers, 04 Aug 2008
In my time as a TEFL teacher this book came in useful on numerous occassions. TEFL textbooks have notoriously shoddy guides to grammar, which are often detrimental rather than helpful for student and teacher. Swan doesn't have any practice exercises, but everything is laid out plain and simple, from the most straighforward grammar points to the complexities of cleft sentences.
As a teacher, especially in my first year, I would have sunk without a trace if it hadn't been for this book. You simply cannot do without it as a TEFL teacher, or as a serious English language student. There's not much more to say about it than that!
Big, fat and useless, 07 May 2008
This is regarded as a classic text, but in the eight years that I have owned it I can't say that I have ever found the answer to a single grammar or usage problem in this book. During a stint in Japan as an ELT teacher I did use the section on taboo words as the basis for an Upper Intermediate/Advanced lesson, but this can hardly be said to justify the cover price - or the weight and space it took up in my suitcase!
Handy guide to refer to, 07 Sep 2006
I've found this book very useful and easy to use for grammatical queries. You know how it is when you're not just quite sure about something, e.g. hypen usage - well this book is great to have at hand.
A very useful grammar the size of a dictionary, 18 Jan 2004
This grammar book has the size of a dictionary, and the entries are in alphabetical order for quick reference. It is "intended for intermediate and advanced students, and for teachers of English," as it is stated in the introduction. I particularly enjoy the bright white of the paper and the use of a brown-red for the entries, whereas their explanations are in black, in bold type and cursive. There are also ten very interesting pages about "newspaper headlines" and useful information on "stress, rhythm and intonation," as well as "weak and strong forms." I have a degree in foreign languages and literatures and have taught English for the last ten years. I think everyone who studies the English language should have this book on their shelves, next to their dictionaries, for whatever your grammar doubt is, you'll quickly find a solution to your problem.

This is a very comprehensive and easy to read guide on basic grammar, spelling and punctuation. The text is laid out in a manner that is clear with pictures to demonstrate the wording. As someone who cannot remember being taught most grammar and punctuation, this has been the easiest to read and the most concise book that I have found relating to grammar, spelling and punctuation. I thoroughly reccommend this book to anyone who needs to re learn, to understand and fill in the gaps in their knowledge in this area.

I thoroughly reccommend this book to anyone who needs to re learn, to understand and fill in the gaps in their knowledge in this area.
An excellent grammar book, 17 Sep 2008
This grammar book is quite big in size, but it is definitely excellent. Each topic is explained in detail, chapters are put in a logical order and paragraphs are well spaced, so one doesn't get tired and bored after reading the first pages. It is a must for anyone who wants to keep a grammar reference guide on the bookshelf.
Superb English/EFL Teachers Grammar Reference Book., 23 Apr 2007
An excellent resource, which all teachers of the English language, EFL or otherwise, should give serious consideration to. Every grammatical point is extensively covered in detail (514 pages) with each area of grammar being explained expansively and broken down in it's component parts, which further outlines specific teaching points such as construction and use.
The format of the book is also excellent with an abundance of clear sub-headings, which include Key Considerations, What Is..., Consolidation Exercises, and Difficulties For Learners sections. The layout is also good and easy on the reader with large sections of text broken up with tables and bullet pointed lists and examples.
Most serious English language teachers will probably own more than one grammar refrence book, while others, such as new teachers, may only own a single book. Either way, and regardless of which category you should fall into, this book should be given serious consdideration to anyone looking to invest in a good quality grammar reference book.
Good for intermediate and above, 01 Aug 2006
A book for those with already a good grasp of english grammar as the language and order does not aim for the beginner. I give up after a few pages when words were thrown in with no prior explanation. A good book but for the already practising and experienced teacher of grammar.

I think everyone who studies the English language should have this book on their shelves, next to their dictionaries, for whatever your grammar doubt is, you'll quickly find a solution to your problem. it is recommended, 11 Aug 2003
when I started studying English at university,I was in great need to an English Grammar book.once I went to the liberary, and searching for that,I began having a look at all the grammar books in there,I met with Practical English Usage and dwelled on studying its content.I found everything amazing and helpful. What I like in this book most is details on ing-form,Articles,Tenses. I used it a lot for teaching classes and as a self-reference, this book is clear and easy to understand, on top of it there are tons of exercises to practise, which is brilliant. Best Grammar Book (for beginners and intermadiate), 27 Jun 2001
It is a reference and practice book so you are going to always need this under your hand. Definetely for self-study. Teachers and students should not be without this book, 17 Dec 2000
The whole series is invaluable to EFL / ESL teachers and students. Strongly recommended for practical use in the classroom and self study for students. Those new to teaching foreign students will also find this book helpful for improving their own grammar. Exercises in the book can be used in lessons making this book a long-term investment.

Yours Sincerely; Amrani Djallal. Radio Operator. PGCE Student, 28 Jan 2005
Excellent!, 14 Apr 2008
Excellent intermediate grammar book with simple explanations / examples and exercises. Great for teachers and sudents! Nice price, 19 Jan 2008
This edition is my favourite.
I've been using and recommending EGIU for over 20 years (oh my..). Raymond Murphy must owe me ££££'s in commissions ;-)
At this price, order 2.
If your class is going to buy the book, then you'll need the newest edition. Very cunning of you to change it ever so slightly every new edition, Cambridge University Press One of the best grammar book I have ever used, 21 Jan 2005
Excellent!, 14 Apr 2008
Excellent elementary grammar book with simple explanations / examples and exercises. Great for teachers and sudents!
Better for Foundation Tier!!!, 07 Apr 2008
This book is quite light-hearted, and as another review says, probably contains everything you need to pass- get a C grade. It doesn't, however, contain the information i would personally say you need for the A*-B Therefore is better for foundation. I have now bought the York Notes revision book, which is much better for higher grades!!!
A must have!, 17 Oct 2007
If you are studying this book for GCSE, I would 100% recommend you get this book. It is a fantastic resource and will definitely help you with your analysis and understanding of the book.
The guide goes into great detail and depth, some of which is not needed but interesting to read anyway. The guide is written in a way where many quotations from the book are incorporated into the guide. This helps you remember the quotations, and helps you in understanding how to use quotations effectively.
This guide provides everything you need to know about Of Mice and Men, including historical context and a fantastic comic-style summary which will aid you greatly in remebering when each event occured. A must have for every student studying this book, no matter what grade you are aiming for or which exam board you are on.
Great for GCSE!, 13 Apr 2007
This is a very good text guide to help with An Inspector Calls at GCSE level. It gives you a great insight into the play and explains things very well. But sometimes it doesn't go into a deeper analysis and description which is required if you want to get the higher marks. But it has greatly helped me with the understanding and knowledge that I have of the play.
why is this book so good?, 28 Mar 2004
this book is fab. Because it is not a "york notes" which is fab for studying books, plays and poetry. this book tells you how to write. basically! it helps with reading skills, writing skills and essential english. it even tells you how to do a speaking and listening!! if you do not have the english skills, doesnt matter how many york notes you've memorized you wont do well... if you cant write an essay you wont do well... i learnt alot from this book. its great. CGP books are great as they give you good solid facts with funny comic-like pictures. most of the pics are silly but they will make you smile! GCP also uses bright colours to make these books fab to look at. it doesn't matter how good the books are if they are 100 pages of black and white notes you wont want to pick them up and read it.
You Need This!, 25 Jan 2004
If You are studying this book for GCSE and care about passing, then get this book... JUST STOP WHAT YOUR DOING, RIGHT NOW & GET THIS BOOK! it gives you everything you need to pass, the door is right infront of you, you just have to walk through it!
