Good layout and accessible, 14 Jul 2007
The book has a good layout and is accessible. It starts with language used, technique, materials needed, preparation for class and a time guide. It then follows with a warm-up exercise, the main lesson and a follow up exercise. The lessons are set out so there is no need for any photocopies, just the whiteboard. There are thirty different lessons for your beginners class. I haven't taught the whole of the book yet but the lessons I have taught went across quite well. The subject areas are what you would normally teach but it's set out in a way that makes it a lot easier to write out on a lesson plan and to organize your thoughts on your aims and objectives. It's a good tool for those of us who find it easier to teach reading and writing, than speaking and listening.
Great little buy, 30 May 2005
This book is brilliant for teachers unsure how to begin planning listening lessons. It's easy to follow and is clearly laid out with different chapters covering different topics. It does not target a specific level of ability and the lessons and activities can therefore be easily adapted to almost any group of students. This book is remarkably cheap considering how much it packs in. I'm a big fan of the entire series and would highly recommend them to any teacher on a budget!

This book, along with the others in the set, is an absolute MUST to any trainee teacher on a CELTA course, and to newly qualified teachers also. Its step by step approach makes it invaluable to trainee teachers in ESOL/EFL because it is SO clear and simple. During my CELTA training, my head was spinning with all the books I felt I had to pore over, so these fantastically priced books were wonderful light relief, and will be just as helpful after you have qualified. Bargain buy for first time teachers!, 22 Nov 2002
The Oxford Basics series contains all the essentials for the newly qualified teacher and elementary learners. The books are organised into 30 useful topic areas eg. numbers, food and drink, describing people. Each book has the same format with units clearly laid out in the form of an actual lesson plan giving ideas for activities, checking comprehension, pronunciation points and follow-up activities. They have easy to copy pictures and a variety of exercises for each unit.
Having bought all five books in the series they did at first seem to repeat material, however because each book focuses on a different skill they complement each other. For less than the average cost of a single teaching book I'd recommend the complete series.

Easy listening, 14 Jun 2006
I got this item for a friend of mine who wishes to learn to speak English better. And immediately I noticed that she was speaking much better. Although more practice is needed, and constant studying just like with any other learning really. Looking forward to getting the 2nd edition
