Superb reference for scientific terminology, 27 Jul 1999
I started using this book in 1979 at the advice of my Undergrad Zoology teacher. Now as a new high school teacher, I find that I return to this book to help my students understand scientific names and nomenclature.
No better way to increase your vocabulary, 11 Dec 1998
You can't do yourself or anyone else interested in words a better favor than by buying this book. For fifteen years it's been beside me (or in the bathroom!) and the knowledge gleaned from all those roots has is inestimable.
A samll book that is a huge resource., 05 Oct 1998
I have worn out 3 copies of this marvelous book. I keep trying to find larger versions ot this book but can find none--regardless of size--that matches Dr. Borrors little volume. This is the Strunk and White for word roots and combining forms. Useful for virtually everyone. A must for anyone even remotely interested in any aspect of science.
Coin your own words..., 19 Jun 1998
I would broaden the appeal to all scientists and laypeople who are interested in understanding the descriptive meaning of the roots of technical terms, or who may want to coin a new word for whatever deviant purposes may come to mind. As a geologist, I find that mineral names, rock-types, descriptive terms, and fossil names all have interesting roots, but the terms do not appear in most dictionaries, and specialized technical dictionaries often do not indicate word origins. This is a great book.
Excellent pocket-sized reference!, 09 Mar 1998
As a medical student, I have found this small but concise dictionary to be an invaluable aid in understanding scientific terminology, most of which is based on Latin word roots. I think most people in the life sciences would find the book a useful adjunct to their bookshelf.
