A real feast...but beware beginners!, 17 Oct 2008
Definitively a truly inspiring book, I have had the book for 3 weeks already made 2 projects out of it...but not quite for beginners as there are not many details provided for each project. Also, for the second project I had to make adjustments as the pattern provided (jumper for the teddy was just never going to fit!)was just not quite right.
Nevetheless, it made me sew again after a 5 year gap...
..., 21 Sep 2008
Best book bought for a long time...., 14 Sep 2008
The moment i received this book i could barely put it down for days, beautiful pictures and easy to follow, all the projects are items you would want to make! Have already tried two projects from the book and have not been disappointed with the result.
An inspirational delight, 31 Aug 2008
I was fortunate to be able to flick through this book before I ordered it from Amazon. This book is the favourite of both my son (12!) and my daughter, for it's dreamy, shabby-chic inspired theme. It is an ode to the home, and the room-by-room treatment of offerings is a perfect way to inspire the crafter to visualise a complete makeover! I love this book so much, that I ordered the Christmas version, which is just as lovely. However, since I can't see us adding the flying pigs to our Yule-time trimmings, this book remains our favourite to curl up to, with a cup of tea. I made the fabulous living room quilt as my first ever quilting project, and am delighted with the result, even if it is deliberately different to the original. There is not a single project in this book that I don't adore, including the daft little strawberry pin-cushion things. Even projects that I will never make, delight me at every turn of the page.
This book is a must for the armchair decorator, stitcher and crafter. Directions are better suited to those with some experience of following shop-bought, sewing pattern directions, or those who can grasp how to create three-dimentional items from two-dimentional fabric, but there are enough projects to suit complete beginners, too.
Everyone should own this book for the warm-fuzzy-feeling it imparts!

Good, although I found diagrams a little confusing for an inexperienced sewer, 27 Oct 2008
As the other reviewers say, this is a good book. It has inspirational pictures and ideas and descriptions of how to measure and make blinds and curtains for windows and also cushions. I have found some of the diagrams and descriptions a little difficult to follow, which is why I have given it 4 stars, but I am an inexperienced sewer.
Brillaint book!, 16 Aug 2008
I was looking for a book to give me clear step by step instructions on curtain and cushion making, that was contemporary in style and which would provide me with some inspiration too. This book exceeded my expectations.
Set out clearly in easy to use sections, this takes you step by step through the process of making blinds, curtains or cushions. Suitable for beginners or those wanting to try something more challenging. Top tips are suggested to give a professional finish too.
I am not a complete novice but it had been a long time since I had attempted anything so I wanted to go back to basics and achieve a good result. I surpassed my expectations and was able to make a fab set of curtains, some cushion covers and I am now planning my next project!
There is useful information for calculating fabric quantities and a glossary at the back in case you don't know (or have forgotton) the terminology!
The book you need for blinds!!, 07 Apr 2008
Love this book!!. It has very clear instructions on Roman blinds, which I have felt most useful. Also, a good directory on supplies for the amateur so sourcing materials is much easier - e.g. corded track sytems. Also bought their encyclopedia but find this the most up to date and inspiring.
UP TO DATE, 03 Dec 2007
I really like this book, for the main reason it's bang up to date, no overbearing stuffy swags and tails in here, just modern designs and materials which look liked they've just walked out of the pages of a 2007 edition of Ideal Home magazine. It takes the usual and turns them into the unusual. Inspirational pictures on how to top and head your curtains, and ideas on how to treat different types of windows, with easy to understand step by step guides to making them. There's ideas on choosing your best track or pole, measuring and estimating fabric and lists of exactly what you will need, with professional tips doted around to give you practical advice. The pictures are inspiring, modern and fresh. If your bored with the other books and sick to death of the old swag and tail, then this is the book for you.

Gorgeous and helpful altogether - a dream!, 22 May 2008
I can only echo what other reviewers have written. If you love textiles, you'll love this book. The history and use of old masters paintings gives a fantastic insight into how textiles have been used through the ages and the author contextualises her descriptions to upholstery projects. This book is an inspiration! I bought this book as an absolute beginner who suddenly thought she might just have taken on a project too big to start with - this book gives me all the detail I need to get started and will help me avoid mistakes. I can feel lots more projects coming along ....!
A book for the experienced and beginner alike., 16 May 2007
I have a few years experience of doing traditional upholstery. I found this book gave me a fresh insight into upholstery as a very personal art form. The writer really knows how to enthuse the reader with the creative spirit. This book is not some dry and dusty manual on how to do it. This book treats upholstery as a fine art, and encourages experimentation, whilst warning against those things she has found do not work artistically.
A good book for the creative artist wanting to express their feeling in some original upholstery. This book is going to make a big difference in my home!
A book that will last for years, 23 Jan 2001
This is the first time I have bought a book specifically about upholstery. I was delighted to have a list of relevant books to choose from and selected this one of the basis of disappointing or no reviews for other books in this section, that it was English (UK) rather than English (US) and... the cover looked lurverly, though they do say.. don't judge a book by .....". However, this book has not disappointed. I'd say this was a book for the beginner, but it contains enough inspiration to last through the years as you progress through and tackle the series of more and more advanced projects (10 in all, from drop-in seat to Chesterfield). The book begins with a potted history of upholstery, illustrated with examples of furniture in art from the 17C and goes on to describe tools, equipment, materials - all well described. The lovely illustrations and text with which the various stages of upholstery are described are excellent and even I, a complete beginner, found the early stages in the process very familiar and recognisable. The advanced stages are every bit as easy to understand and there are useful lists of suppliers of fabric and tools, and a glossary of terms.Described as a "Practical Guide to Upholstering Traditional Furniture", it is comprehensive and will serve as a good clear reference, as it's well written in digestable sections. If I have a critisism it is that, the notes accompanying some the photographs drew my attention away from the text from time to time - but still, that probably says more about me than the book !

Curtain Makers Bible, 04 Dec 2007
This book is an absolute must for all people serious about making curtains. As others have already pointed out, this is not a book full of glossy pictures but one full of very detailed instructions on how to achieve first class, professionally made curtains and associated soft furnishings in all styles. I have collected over the years all the books by Merrick and Day and they are all as good as this one. I am a professional curtain maker and I dont think a day goes by when I dont refer to this book to help me out! I wished I had found this book when I first started making curtains, I wouldnt have bothered with all the others I have invested in! Highly recommended. Excellent reference book, 25 Apr 2007
I have been designing and making curtains professionally for over 25 years and bought this book in 1997. I have many books on curtain making & soft furnishings as I am constantly striving for improvement (although my customers are always delighted!!!) and this book has helped me no end with my business.
It's one of my favourites and is packed with useful information with lots of professional tips clearly outlined. The author stresses that there are no RIGID rules to curtain making as styles evolve and you can adapt the instructions to suit.
There's a brief section outlining the history of the curtain, stating that we can learn a great deal by seeing how our ancestors dealt with the problems facing us today, which I found fascinating.
The book teaches you about the different fabrics, how to work out how much fabric to use, measuring essentials, awkward windows, sewing machines & how to get the best out of them, poles & tracks, how to make pelmets & blinds of all kinds, and much, much more.
It shows traditional styles of window treatments (which never go out of fashion) and also the more contemporary, modern styles.
I have found that most customers who want bespoke soft furnishings expect them to last and therefore usually chose traditional styles anyway with an individual twist (which sets them apart from the shop bought styles)- the details that make the difference - and for that purpose the pictures and styles in this book are invaluable.
I found the instructions clear and easy to follow so I would recommend this book for the beginner or professional alike.
I can honestly say that, even though it's fairly expensive compared to some inferior titles(which I wish I hadn't wasted my money on), I have certainly got my money's worth out of this book.
For the professional - I would also recommend The Curtain Design Directory, also by Merrick and Day which is another essential reference book! Hope this helps! Not at all an encyclopaedia, 07 Mar 2006
An encyclopaedia would suggest good organisation and clear details. I bought the book, not for inspiration (!) but for the heights of standard headings and hems, how far in the pleats should start, how many to a panel, how to attach the hooks (particularly when the curtain material is very heavy), all of which are necessary to produce curtains that 'look right'. It's true that most of the information is in the book. Somewhere. However, the headings and typeface, the layout, the quantity of words, the order in which the information is given all lead to such confusion, that you start to consider how beautiful unembellished glass is. I should point out that I am a tailor, so it is hardly a question of sewing experience. Sew like a pro, 30 Sep 2005
Excellent - a great book if you want to make your own curtains and blinds. The pictures are very trad, but it has clear instructions, good line drawings, and a rating system to tell you how difficult projects are (though be warned 4 spoools really does mean very difficult, not for the faint hearted!). I have so far managed to put up pelemt boards and tracks, make pelmets, Roman blinds and interlined curtains, and am about to tackle some more. Really the only how-to book you need (and you can get all the supplies on their website), though I would recommend also getting the Swags and Tails pattern book(s) if you intend to make draped swags. My only quibble is that their suggested pelmet proportions (1/5 overall length of curtains) are very traditional, and I found that a shorter pelmet (1/6 or even a little shorter for a very tall window) looked more modern - but as they suggest, trying the design in cheap fabric first is the best way.
"The Bible" for curtain makers, 26 Jan 2005
If you're after ideas and inspiration and want lots of colour pictures then this is not the book for you. More than half the book is taken up with detailed, stitch by stitch instructions on making curtains and blinds including measuring up, dealing with awkward windows, what types of fabrics to use in what situations and how to form handmade pleats. It's the best and most professional reference book around if you make curtains properly but it's really not a general interest or interior design book.

Product Description
The title, The Essential Guide to Upholstery is perfect for this beautiful, comprehensive and sumptuous volume. It does not simply possess the practical DIY air of so many upholstery books but rather seduces you into a world of opulence and elegance. First comes an interesting historical introduction, then useful hints on materials, tools and obtaining furniture in need of upholstering as Gates quickly gets into the essential techniques. The first subject is that typical junk shop find, a dilapidated but potentially desirable armchair. As with all the 25 projects, every stage of the restoration process is presented through detailed illustrated and photographed instructions, with close ups of the trickiest bits. These projects range from simple upright dining chairs to a decadently decorative day bed. With each of these projects come plenty of suggestions on colour, fabric and trimmings, nothing too prescriptive though as the emphasis throughout is very much on the fun and satisfaction of transforming an unloved piece of furniture rather than obsessing over historic authenticity. The layout and photography throughout are a pleasure to behold and the important ingredient, planning, is manifestly demonstrated in the presentation of this book. Throughout, you get the feeling that you are in the safe hands of an expert, which indeed you are. The author, Dorothy Gates is an authority on upholstery and what she tells you is borne out of a lifetime's experience. Taught by her father, she was the first female President of the Association of Master Upholsters and Soft Furnishers and has passed her skills onto her sons and many students. The Glossary and Suppliers and Institutions sections are further evidence of her generous desire to pass down her knowledge. She gives you confidence and enthusiasm to tackle tasks that previously you might have hesitated over. The Essential Guide to Upholstery is a book of admirable provenance--there is probably nothing better in its field. --Teresa Falinska

If your bored with the other books and sick to death of the old swag and tail, then this is the book for you. handy book for home., 22 Jul 2006
If you are looking for a book to help make blinds and curtains, look no further. this book has diagrams and clear instructions on how to measure and make curtains and blinds, all types of blinds from roller to roman, also with beautiful pictures of all window dressing. well written.
1st Class !

Review of Essestial Guide to Upholstery, 19 Apr 2003
I belonged to an upholstery class and we all placed a mass order because we were so impressed with the book. It is full of colour photographs of projects. Information on upholstery materials/tools, how to complete different projects - maybe not in as much detail as a beginner would like, or need - and lots of inspiration with regard to using materials and trimmings.
What can I upholster first??!!, 01 Feb 2002
Having received this book as a b'day pressie, I had to ask my sister "Where are the tools to go with it? I want to start NOW!!" I am so inspired by this beautiful book - the things you can do to an old, icky piece of furniture are just amazing. Dorothy Gates has included projects from beginner level (that's me!)up, explains how to do the basic stuff, gives detailed material lists of what you will need for each project, discusses colour schemes, textures and trimmings, gives tips for setting up your work space, AND provides a substantial list of suppliers at the back of book...so you can get started straight away! There are hundreds of colour drawings and photographs illustrating projects ranging from dining chairs and armchairs to day beds, footstools, blanket boxes and lounge suites. There's a glossary at the back in case you forget what a tack roll is, and a working order checklist at the front (so once you know what you are doing, you can simply refer to that to make sure you don't miss a step, instead of reading a whole chapter again!) Truly, an excellent book! Thank you Dorothy Gates - you have inspired me to begin a new hobby!

I was fortunate to be able to flick through this book before I ordered it from Amazon. This book is the favourite of both my son (12!) and my daughter, for it's dreamy, shabby-chic inspired theme. Helpful book with great photo's, 22 May 2008
This I think is a book for beginners. It is generously sized and includes actual photographs of each of the projects being demonstrated. It doesn't contain a great deal of text, working mainly with lists of what you need then showing you exactly what to do. There is a good range of projects covering just about any seating upholstery project you might want to tackle. I particularly like the photo's showing where various tools are used (as a beginner, some of the pins and needles look rather oddly shaped to me so its good to see what they are actually meant for!). Well worth buying.
good-looking book, 01 Aug 2007
In spite of the book contains the huge information about reupholstering the old furniture No new methods described. For example the polyurethane foam is not a deal- the only horse hair and so on. The method of material calculations not included also like as you already have the fabrics factory in your home and don't need to by the fabrics.
In any case the book can be helpfull for the people who is interesting in remodeling of old armchairs or chairs in conjunction with old master secrets. Just be prepared to have all necessary materials in your hands.
Good luck.
Complete Step-By-Step Upholstery by David Sowle and Ruth Dye, 03 Jul 2005
This beautiful, inspirational book seduced me into believing that I could reupholster an antique sofa of tricky dimensions. The gorgeous photographs, clear illustrations and sensible step-by-step instructions were logical and easy to follow. The completion of each stage was satisfying and thrilling and enhanced my confidence in my ability to complete the project. to a professional level. The final result is a pleasingly luxurious and elegant sofa. I can't believe I did it myself and treasure the book that made it possible.

1st Class !
It's the best and most professional reference book around if you make curtains properly but it's really not a general interest or interior design book.
essential guide to upholstery, 31 Jul 2005
exactly what you need to get started, the perfect bible for anyone going into re upholstery.
That covers it ..., 09 Jul 2006
If you want a concise, yet comprehensive reference guide to everything from sofa cushions to sofa drapes and from table cloths to table covers, look no further: Gina Moore's book will show you all you need to know. There are short, but very informative chapters on assessing and measuring your furniture, choosing the right colours and fabrics, etc., as well as nicely illustrated, easy-to-follow instructions for a variety of stitches and seams. The last two thirds of the book are dedicated to individual projects. Here again, everything is illustrated with step-by-step photographs, and all instructions are clearly written und easy to understand, even for sewing novices. Most importantly, though, all projects serve as templates, too, and can effortlessly be adapted to suit personal needs and tastes.
Gina Moore manages to make cushion and cover making look easy and fun, offers a host of ideas to the experienced and the beginner alike, and supplies the reader with enough inspiration to turn it into a fully-fledged hobby (if it isn't already.)

Beautiful!, 26 Oct 2008
I ordered this book after already having the christmas addition but this one is certainly the best from the collection.
The ideas are inspiring and the photogrophy is gorgeous. I love it. Ive made a few items and the instructions are clear and straightforward.
Highly Recommended.
I really like this book, for the main reason it's bang up to date, n | | |
