Not concise enough, 02 Jun 2008
This book is neither one thing nor t'other. It is not a hand-holding guide to setting up your allotment step-by-step, and it is certainly not a reference book. It has helped give me a few ideas, and most vegetables are covered, but it's infuriatingly difficult to find what you need, and leaves you guessing in vital areas. The tone is nice, and friendly, and soft, and unintimidating for a beginner, but the information is something of a damp squib.
All the basics in one book, 24 Mar 2008
I've had a very productive and quite big allotment for 2 and a half years now. This is the first allotment guide I ever bought and still the one I use the most. All of the basics are there in a clear and concise format. I've got no idea what the one-star reviewers are on about: I agree that it is not an exhaustive guide, but note that it is for BEGINNERS! An excellent choice if you're just starting out.
Really useful starters guide, 23 Jun 2007
I've been meaning to write this review for a while now as I've found this book to be a really useful guide to starting up my allotment which has been up and running just over a year now. I think it contains just the right level of information to get the beginner up and running and not put them off by overwhelming them with complex and superfluous gardening jargon. I felt as well that it had just the right balance between ideas on how to get the allotment up and running, soil improvement, crop rotation, seed suppliers etc.. and information on various veggies, herbs, companion plants and common pests. The recipes were a nice touch as well.
Overall, once you've got started and know what you want to grow you'll probably want to search out more detailed information but if you want help reaching that stage in the first place, you can't really go wrong with this book.
Praise from Oxford, 07 Apr 2006
This book is an allotment holder's dream -- a thoroughly researched, attractive, clear, well-written and commonsense guide to good and effective practice. Each page is packed with advice and suggestions, excellent tips and even recipes. Its indexing and cross references are invaluable, as are its listing of organic seed merchants and of flowers which are both beautiful and promote vegetable growth. An essential handbook for eyars to come.

Embroidery for the fearful beginner!, 04 Nov 2008
Doodle Stitching: Fresh and Fun Embroidery for Beginners
I have always wanted to embroider & have never been brave enough.I bought this book after reading the amazon reviews I was not disappointed it's fab! The stitches are presented clear & colourful. I loved that the projects are simple but also that they are inspiring, you really think I could do that, what's more I could add a bit of this and....I particularily liked the fireworks design on the halter top as it's a simple way to customise clothes & the cute softie owl & racoon. If you don't know where to begin by this you won't regret it!
Brilliant, 01 Sep 2008
I love this book. The stitches used are simple yet effective, and are well explained. The designs are wonderful. Fresh, vibrant, trendy, inovative yet timeless. The artist is talented and I look forward to any other offerings from her. Even though I am not fantastically gifted at embroidery (especially satin stitch), the projects are inspirational and yet remain undaunting. It's a traditional craft brought bang-up-to-date.
Like to stitch, 30 Jul 2008
This book is a refreshing change from traditional embroidery books. It's modern and inspiring. Ideal for beginners. It concentrates on about 18 basic stitches to create a range of designs. No counting or measuring. Lot's of clear and bright photographs and only minimum equipment required. I can't wait to get started.

Definitely for beginners.., 11 Jan 2008
I bought this book after attending a puppy agility class with my dog and loving it so much I wanted to get into the sport.
The book goes over the history of the sport, current competitions, (it is American Kennel Club orientated), the obstacles themselves and the techniques. However, it feels as though each topic is just glossed over and it left me wanting to know more. It describes the very basic techniques- a lot of it is basic obedience skills quite well but left me wanting on actual agility skills.
However, this is a good introduction overall and not so expensive that I felt ripped off. I just had to go out and buy more books when I had finished to deepen my knowledge!
Excellent book for beginners., 05 Jun 2007
This is a great book if you are a beginner with Dog Agility. Its full colour throughout with easily readable and well poresented text. There are hundreds of photos to accompany the text too. It goes through every aspect of the 'sport' from rules to training techniques to making your own home or garden equipment. The author is clearly an expert and reminds the reader that this activity is, and should remain, fun for the 'team' (dog and owner). Gives you all the advice you need to get started.

good but lasted 2.5 years, 18 May 2008
decent product, easy to use.
Wasnt as quick as claimed and I dont put much in.
element went after 2.5 years. I think they should last longer. Try another make.
Excellent, 10 Apr 2008
I really love it! The most important for me that it evacuates fat when cooking chicken or minced meat.
And I wash it in my washing-machine - no problems at all!!!
Brilliant!!!, 07 Apr 2008
I love this thing...
I can come home from the gym, throw in the veggies, meat and potato, get in the shower.
By the time I'm done, its done.
Minimum cleaning....
Plus..I am eating veggies now I would never have eaten before.
Just throw them all in. Easier than making a sandwich.
Totally brilliant

Top Product, 19 Feb 2008
I bought this steamer based solely on the positive customer reviews that it has and I have to say that it is a fabulous steamer. Veg has never tasted so good and this steamer is both efficient and easy to clean and great stacking order for compact and easy storage. It is well designed and I think the price is an absolute bargain considering the amount of elecricity it is saving me.
Not the best, but good value for money, 03 Feb 2008
This is the second steamer that I have had and it is very sturdy, I also like the fact that it has a separator for doing multiple veg in the same tray. My criticism would be however, that it does not stack quite as neatly as the Tefal models that I have owned and seen previously and the lid handle is not flat so you are not able to rest the trays onto the lid (to collect the water that drains from the trays) whilst dishing up the food. Both minor points, but have made life slightly more difficult for me than the previous Tefal model I had before.

Ideal for floral students or beginners, 18 Jan 2005
hi I am currently trainging to become a florist and bought this book on the off chance that it would help me......well i must say this book is excellent and i am so pleased with my purchase, not only does it show what you need to become a florist but it shows step by step guide to make floral arragements for all occassions. Beginners Guide to Floristry, 11 Nov 2003
This is a brilliant informative book, having done an Intense Floristry Course at WCOH and now doing C& G in Floristry this book is now my bible. I would throughly recommend it to any students of floristry.
Beginner's Floristry, 16 Sep 2003
This is a interesting book with great illustrations. You will not learn floristry by just using the book on its own, however it compliments a beginners course extremely well. Great for practising indoors and for refreshing your memory later on.

Most helpful knit design book ever, 27 Mar 2008
This is an amazingly readable book, with clear but not patronising explanations; deals with design basics such as how to measure precisely, and to work out shapings. The section on specification drawing was particularly helpful for me, as was the discussion of choice of yarn for texture and drape, and the guidance on calculating yarn quantities.
Demonstrates all principles and techniques with very clear diagrams and schematics.
Has given me (after 35 years of knitting!) the confidence finally to design a garment myself. Thanks and well-done, Debbie!!
This is for me!!!, 18 Mar 2008
I really like this book. It is logical and easy to follow and does not use the "you are holding your needles in the wrong way" mentality I usually find in books about design. It is for the new generation of knitters who want to start to design their own projects and as a beginner in this area myself, I was particularly pleased to find socks and hats as well as sweaters, so I can start with something easy and work towards the more difficult areas.
There is a lovely section about colour and finding inspiration, beautifully illustrated with photographs and reproduction of paintings.
There is also a lot of graph paper to practice on, which, if like me, you are fond of intarsia and fairisle, you will find useful. I have not used the proportional graph paper and was interested to see how much easier it is to transfer a design using this paper.
I have tried to design a sweater myself in the past, without much success with the sleeves, reading this book I can see why, for which I am really grateful and can't wait to try again.
Easy....uninspiring and disappointing ! . , 05 Mar 2008
This book purports to cover knitwear design in 5 EASY steps. So basic that they would be boring to anyone who has already done some knitting. Only those who have would be likely to buy this book. It is completely uninspiring, and on some subjects almost no constructive help at all, eg colour and intarsia knitting and cablework. Then there are 48 pages of knitters graph paper, this about 33% of the whole book ! One of the most important measurements is missed out altogether, being from the nape of the neck to the wrist. Helpful for those who always end up with sleeves too long ! Some chapters on adapting patterns to fit would have been good too.

An essential handbook for eyars to come. praise from Oxford, 07 Apr 2006

The patterns all look manageable and are both beautiful and practical. The book is beautifully laid out. Wool weights are in USA jargon but I can translate those for her. I'll be buying a copy for myself.

Complete Plumbing, 06 Feb 2006
Well laid out book if you live in the USA. All measurements in imperial which have no value here now. Also most of the projects were laid out for American homes & informing unskilled people how to fix gas appliances should not be encouraged. Unfortunately I will have to return this book.
Caveat emptor, 29 Dec 2004
My fault. I should have read the other reviews before ordering. I too didn't notice the book was for the American market. I am now almost brainwashed into thinking in metric.(with difficulty!) I would just love to have the equivalent of Lowes Building Store in the UK, you can walk out with a virtual house and load it in the truck. But in the UK we are stuck with metric and B & Q which doesn't even come close. So sorry, I'll have to return this excellent book.
Great Book - if you live in the USA, 18 Oct 2004
This book contains everything in the Synopsis - there are great instructions, lots of helpful photos etc. It also has a refreshing non-sexist approach, with lots of photos of lady plumbers. It's not obvious from the way it's listed, but it's published in the USA and intended for the American market. The extent to which any of the procedures etc. are compatible with UK building regulations is undefined
