Wonderful photos to help you identify everything, 18 Jun 2006
I don't own this book but recently bought a copy for my brother, and would like to get one myself. What struck me when browsing this book, and what impelled me to buy it, was the plethora of excellent, good-sized colour photos to enable the precise identification of every pest and disease. Unfortunately many books on this subject provide instead only line drawings, which don't do the trick in the same way as a good photo.
But this book is not just full of photos - there's plenty of detailed written info too on each problem and which plants it affects, and no doubt (since it's an RHS book and involved Pippa Greenwood) of good quality too, but I didn't have a chance to read through it and assess it.
Another RHS book on the same subject is written by different authors and has few if any photos, relying on b&w line drawings, and this one looks far superior. I only refrain from giving this five stars because I have not had a chance to read it in depth.

This book contains all the necessary information to make successful diagnoses for a wide range of plant problems. Useful and useable for the amateur and professional alike, containing colour photos, detailed information on pests and diseases and lists of the most frequent and likely problems for a wide range of plants. Also, this book is so much more affordable the the majority of plant pathology books which are aimed at a very specialist market and often deal with only insect pests or diseases. It even contains information on badgers and deer.
Just the best for the not so learned gardener, 12 Dec 2000
This book makes it simple to identify gardening problems, with its clear photos and use of simple names for plants as well as the latin ones. I found a solution to my problem within seconds. It will certainly be my bible for any gardening queries.
A superb, intelligent book, 03 Apr 2000
This is the ideal book for novice and professional alike. The subject is covered thoroughly and without patronising the reader. If you aren't sure what has attacked your prized and precious plants then get a copy of Stefan Buczacki and Keith Harris' book. No good gardener should be without it.

Any book on pests is not something which you want to spend very long reading, so I was delighted when i found this little book which gives me all the info I need about how to deal with pests (organically) that are having a good munch on the plants and vegetables in my garden. As well as telling you all about the bad insects, it also tells you about the good insects that will help act as a deterent. The price is also refreshingly good. They only cost £2.99! Frankly, if I'm not going to spend much time reading it, I certainly don't want to be paying lots for it!

Interesting angle on organics, 18 Aug 2008
This guy is a professor based in the US and although it is American and I'm not quite sure all of the chemicals mentioned are allowed for use in gardens in the UK this is a good book any UK gardener will find interesting. Starting off with an open mind and a keen interest in research he finds out which pesticides are the most harmful to use - both organic and chemical - and tries to blow away some of the rhetoric used on both sides of the argument. I found his style very readable and although he is talking lots of science you never feel confused. I'd recommend it to any inquisitive gardener who wants to get their facts straight about organics.

Weed ID in the Field, 15 Jan 2006
This is a great little book. The main thing being that it is a little book, intended for taking into the field and stuffing in your pocket. It covers the most common weeds you're likely to find, with excellent pictures from early germination to more mature seedling/plant. It also has clear diagrams of the main features to look out for and the usual basic information on the plants themselves. It has handy summaries of the cotyledon and seedling photos for quick reference and is very easy to use. The only thing is that it's lacking a few more species as i dont think its extensive enough. Its a great starting point but it is likely that more information is liekly to be needed for extensive identification. This should not put you off for use in the garden though, as it is a great little book. It has however limited the star rating to 4 rather than 5 as i think it could still work and be double the size.

A COMPLETE AND NATURAL SOLUTION TO GARDEN PESTS, 12 Jun 1999
I read the entire book from cover to cover with a highlighter in hand. I could not stop reading (and highlighting). This book was exactly what I was searching for. A complete and natural guide to ridding my garden of those pesky pests. I have used many of Loren's "receipes" and can honestly say they work. I would and do recommend this book to anyone who has a love for gardening, a love for nature, and a hate for destructive pests who get in the way.
An excellent resource!, 14 May 1999
I listened to Loren's tips for years on television. It is nice to have so many of them compiled in one handy resource. The tips contained are cost-effective, easy to use, and far better for people and the enviroment. Highly recommended!

Disappointing, 14 Feb 2008
Sorry, but this book does not help me to identify weeds. There is little consistency in the layout; Willowherbs has two reasonably clear photographs and a labelled drawing whilst Bittercress makes do with two out of focus photos. Too arty. Photos wouldn't look out of place on a birthday card.
Weeds friend or foe, 16 Oct 2002
A clearly written and brightly illustrated guide to weeds or not weeds for the gardener and wild life lover. Giving excellent information, allowing the reader to really use the book time and time again. Clearly laid out with a exceelnt mixture of photographs and information. Providing instructions on removal, monitoring, cultivation and all the arguments for keeping or destroying plants. I currently have the libraries copy. But i am going to buy this book. A definate for any gardener however expereinced.

This is a much needed and fabulous manual., 18 Jun 1998
When trying to identify a particular problem with growing trees or shrubs knowing what kinds of insects are possible culprits is a major step. This book gives us, in color photos and descriptions, most of the common larvae that can be found feeding on the particular plants. Even Entomology texts often refuse to deal with larvae of insects, keeping only the adults in the keys and descriptions (even though the adults are often not pests!). This guide will be a welcome addition to any plant clinic, grower, or Entomology professor or student's bookshelf.
