Need more information, 11 Nov 2008
This book never give me what I was expecting of it, am disappointing in that I needed more information and explanation in detail with the practical task from college and the pictures that are in the book there is no need giving pictures that are not fully informational in terms of labelling. This book aim at people with little or no knowledge of plumbing so it need to give more explanation. I am left at a cross road a lot of times with this book.
It could be much much better.
JTL Tech Cert Lev 2 6129, 10 Nov 2008
This is THE book to refer to if you're doing the C&G 6129 course. It leaves nothing out. If you're with OLCI please don't just rely on their own folder it's just not got the info in. This JTL book is clearly set out and really easy to absorb the info. The clear diagrams and explanations don't leave you wondering. Just buy it !
Excellent book for level 2 both 6129 and 6089, 05 Sep 2008
Here at PPL Training in York we used to use the old JTL Level 2 plumbing book for our City & Guilds NVQ level 2 courses. This lastest book combines both the NVQ side and the tech cert (6129) side, which is a good step forward as BOTH qualifications must be taken to gain a NVQ 2 in Plumbing.
The book is clearly laid out with individual chapters on the course structure. Errors from the previous versions have been corrected and along with clear colour diagrams makes this book suitable for both young and old alike. We at PPL train a mixture of age groups and find this book a very valuable reference and learning resource.
IF you are training to be a plumber either at a private college like PPL or a local FE college this is one of the books you MUST buy - excellent.

What a great book to compliment Lego Mindstorms, 21 Jan 2008
My 12 year old son received Lego Mindstorms for Xmas in 2006 and I recognised that we needed further guidance and inspiration to learn and go beyond the basics. Therefore we bought this book for Xmas 2007,, and it's been fantastic. It offers a reference guide to all the pieces and how to work with gears and axles etc,, it explains and provides a reference for all the programming blocks. Then it provides 6 robots with clear step by step instructions on how to build them, and provides the programming code for each. The programmes build up in complexity to a level where the robots could be believed to be intelligent. The other great thing is that the author has provided free of charge all the programmes featured in the book on his website. We have downloaded a few for "tag-bot" with no difficulty. We have had great fun running tag-bot around the house. The programme downloads avoid you having to write the programme steps from scratch, and allow you to review them and learn from them. We are now using our understanding of the author's programmes to create alternatives. The authors work is clear, well written and authoritative. If you want your child or any adult for that matter to master Automation and Control, then you won't go wrong with this great Lego Mindstorms package and this book. Great Mr Perdue!!
This is the one!!!, 10 Nov 2007
OK, you have the brilliant Lego Mindstorms NXT set. You made Spike the Scorpion and were amazed but then there's a big gap - what do you do next?
This book arrived 3 hours ago. I've waited 4 months for it. It really teaches you robotics. I now understand gears!!
The diagrams are clearer than 'The Mayan Adventure' which has greyish black and white photographs. I'm confident the chapters on programming will explain NXT-G. The 6 robots - based on 4 designs look incredible. They start simple and get complex. If number 6 does what it says (and I think it will) I will be amazed.
This book, the Mindstorms NXT set and some well chosen storage containers (essential!) combine to make the best £200 Christmas present around.

Good but not perfect, 14 Dec 2006
A good book but not detailed enough. We use this as an additional training resource here at PPL Plumbing Training in York. As with the Level 3 version it seems to be aimed at younger learners. It is easy to read and gives a fair amount of coverage but we believe there are more comprehensive level 3 books out there.
best book for nvq, 10 Mar 2006
this book is the best i have read for the nvq qualification together with treloar gas instalation technology they should give you a very good understanding of modern plumbing practice

I have the THIRD EDITION, 18 Sep 2007
I bought a second hand copy of the third edition, so I can't comment on the new online chapters that appear to be the main criticism of the book. What I can say is that the quality of the existing chapters is impressive. The material was suitable to entirely teach myself the syllabus of a second year undergraduate module in materials science as part of my mechanical engineering degree, whilst being refreshingly concise.
Excelent book, but online nightmare, 14 Jan 2007
This book is a must have for anyone who is studying engineering. I have found it an invaluable source information as my lecturer in the subject is often confusing and the notes poor. I do have to agree sadly though with a past reviewer about the online portion. I registered online then didn't receive an email so now I am unable to access any of the online content. For this I am giving the book a 3, if only they could fix the web portion this book would be an easy 5.
Students worst nightmare, 10 Nov 2006
The parts of the book they give you are fine, but the publisher is greedy at the students expense. First off, the last five chapters are NOT included in the text! You have to go 'online' to get them. I bought a new copy with the access code, there is no longer any CD that comes with it, it is all 'online'. I use quotes b/c 'online' means registering your info with the publisher and then being allowed to get the material. I did this and had to carefully avoid checking all the right boxes to avoid spamming, which still didn't stop it. But after all that is done, they send you a confirmation email, an email I didn't get. Gmail might rightfully trash this companies emails. The result is denial of trying to register a second time with the same code, and nullification of that code if you don't authenticate within a week. So now I don't have access to any of the material and have to pay for the price of the book again to get a new access code. My other choice is to fail the quizzes!
If you are a student, don't buy this book for reference, as it is incomplete, and the website will probably only function until the next edition comes out. You can't buy it used as you have to pay for the access anyway.
Professors who are interested, please do your students a favor and stay away from this book. If you like the way it works, look into using the sixth edition, as I am pretty sure it has every chapter in it even if it is slightly outdated and it is still sold on Amazon. Your students can also buy a used copy. Even if they buy a new copy, they don't risk being sucked dry from this greedy publisher.
Spot on!, 12 Feb 2006
This is a must for any student studying not just material science but any form of engineering. Well written and easy to understand, Well worth the money.
Brilliant, just BRILLIANT!!!, 10 Jan 2006
I cannot fault this text book in any way possible! It is just perfect!! Every day after leaving my Chemical Engineering lecture, i would review what was taught by reading the text book, and i just cannot emphasise enough how much it engraved all the essential concepts in my brain!! I wish i could give it more than 5 stars!!

Better than some of the others in the series - but if you've got the textbook, 06 May 2008
Whilst the textbook in the same series may seem bright, colourful and easy to understand- don't expect the same quality from this revision guide. If you've got the textbook in this series they have just taken the same examples, questions and put them into a dreary and reptitive book that covers the same material in the same way. Whilst a few new examples and quick questions are dispersed there to keep some people happy- you would be better looking elswhere.
However, If you don't have the textbook from this series or are looking for a quick reminder of things- then buy it- otherwise its not worth your money.
Very helpful and easy to follow., 03 Jan 2002
I found this book very helpfull when I had limited time to revise as most other books just weren't as clear. It's accurate, easy to understand and well written.

Excellent book, 26 Apr 2008
This book is very easy to follow and helped me greatly during my degree. It is Much Much better than "Engineering mathematics by K.A Stroud" which was on my reading list (and is now an expensive door stop)
I just don't know who would read this book..., 18 Sep 2007
I was forced to buy this for the first year of an MEng course and the level of the material just didn't seem right. The first several chapters revise addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Eventually it reaches the level of A-Level maths, which should be a pre-requisite for most engineering degrees anyway. The only things that I hadn't covered before starting my degree were laplace transforms and fourier series.
I guess it could be a good book for revision, but who really has the time to read a 1000 page book on topics they know inside out?
So in conclusion, its probably a good book for the niche market of people who dont have any mathematical background and want a foundation for technical learning- perhaps technicians trying to go professional.
excellent!, 27 Jun 2006
I have found this book invaluable during the first year of my BEng course, it is clear in its explanations and always seems to follow the simplest most systematic way to solving problems.
I think this book is particularly good because it starts off with the basics and works you up to a high level, so it is particularly good if you dont feel too confident with your maths, there are plenty of worked examples and questions to attempt to help you gain confidence.
Having looked at most other maths textbooks in the library this year i have always found this the clearest and most user friendly book, so for this reason i recommend it to anyone in the first year of a BEng course.
Lots of information thats easy to digest, 16 Mar 2001
If you need to learn or re-learn maths for any particular reason and you have enough time to sit down and work systematically through a book, this is the one to get. It has a clear reader-friendly layout with lots of highlighted key points to remember when it comes to revision. The chapters are split up into blocks and there are questions at the end of each one which build up to an end of chapter test, so you have plently of opportunities to test what you have read. A very good buy, especially for those who are weak at maths.
good paced well worked degree level text book, 02 Feb 2001
this is a rather good book. there are plenty of good examples within it and is well layed out. it is easy to find parts which you are looking for and has been very useful to a poor BEng Engineering student! The book was recomended to the students by two of the universitys best Engineering Mathematical lecturers. From a student point of view, it has been useful throughout the lectures yet more useful within my private studies. This is due to the lay out of the text.

Great book, 27 Jun 2008
Very difficult exam . This gives a great view of Question that could be asked with good answers, Great Help.Lots of advanced study needed before course and exam. This book shows what level is requied. Good Book.

We use this book on our NVQ 2 Plumbing course here a PPL Training. Our students come from a wide range of backgrounds and the clear and easy to follow diagrams are a must. As I mentioned on my review of the Level 2 JTL Plumbing book, this book at not as technical as some out there. But we would recommend it in conjuction with the JTL book.
Great new plumbing title, 02 Mar 2007
I just received a copy of this new Heinemann revision guide today. It looks really great in helping me with my plumbing technical certificate. The information is really clear and the questions all have a description of the answers. I have bought quite a few books and I really think that this is going to be the best book to help me with my exams.

Combine this with a great instructor and you're onto a winner..., 11 Aug 2008
I've been trying to pass my test for a while now and always seem to get things cropping up that put my driving on the backseat (excuse the pun!).
However after purchasing this book I have successfully managed to take driving lessions for 2 months now and have made a lot of progress. This books tips on making time made a difference to me. Now I cannot wait to pass my driving test and use my new found skill (because driving is a skill).
This book gives you the lighthearted encouragement you know your friends want to give you but have given up on the idea of you passing your test.
I followed the tips in this book and actually got rid of my partners driving intructor (the gossip and unreliable type will NEVER get you through your test). Since then he is happily progressing with his new instructor. I also followed the tips and have found an instructor who understands I get panicky (once in a while) and doesn't shout or make me feel really small. I've even done my emergency stop without any problems-thanks to this books heads up on the situation (and of course my instructor).
This book is a must for any girl/ladee-I would even suggest it be a stample on the list of parents who have daughters turning 17 as this book will help them so much.
Seriously get this before starting lessons, 09 Jun 2008
Such a good read, i love this book, still reading it as i'm on my forth lesson. It's really funny in places, had me in tears. Teaches breathing exercises, stocking up on rescue remedy, what shoes/clothes to wear whilst driving, snippets from previous learners. Honestly get this truly inspirational.
A useful addition to any learner's bookshelf..., 05 Jan 2008
I first heard about this book a while back but I didn't actually buy it until very recently. From reading the other reviews it was obviously quite a positive sounding book to read and so I took the plunge and bought my own copy. At the moment I'm taking driving lessons and I found that this book really helped me. It has lots of useful hints and tips for us lady-drivers out there and is also clearly laid out with sections on before, during and after lessons aswell as some brief sections on buying cars and insurance. I particularly like the inclusion of other people's personal experience in driving related matters. It really gave me the idea that driving is nothing to fear, it's something to be enjoyed. This book might not be for everyone but I found it incredibly useful. Overall, a great product and it would make an ideal gift for any young learner driver out there.
Not Just for Girls, 04 Sep 2007
I bought the Girls'Guide to Losing your L-Plates last year when I was learning to drive in a manual car. I was good at clutch control but felt nervous about stalling and holding the car "on the bite" at junctions. Reading this book helped me to realise that driving does not come naturally to everyone. I could easily relate to the true life stories of crying in front of the instructor and struggles with roundabouts (my own pet hate). This year I switched over to automatic and passed my test in August.
The book is written in a friendly manner but is never too jokey or girly (despite the title). I found the level of writing was pitched just right - neither simplistic nor dry and over technical. I now keep the book on a shelf next to my road atlases and I still refer to it when I need to look up something I have forgotten or don't quite understand.
As a 40 something I could hardly describe myself as a girl but I would heartily recommend this book to learner driver "boys" and "girls" of all ages.
If at first you don't succeed, 03 Sep 2007
It took me five goes to pass my test and there were times when I felt like giving up but this book kept me going. I read the chapter 'If at first you don't succeed' over and over and it helped me feel a lot more positive and confident. It's full of useful tips and helps you keep a sense of humour about the ups and downs of driving. Don't think I'd have got my licence without it.

If you want your child or any adult for that matter to master Automation and Control, then you won't go wrong with this great Lego Mindstorms p | | |
