Well laid out. easy to read. lots of nice diagrams. ok so it won't get you honours points but should contain enough to pass and is far less intimidating than those huge physiology texts. great for preclinical medics. not enough detail for pure physiology students though.

Human Physiology is a useful introductory text to physiology, particularly for first year medical students who may find some of the more detailed texts somewhat overwhelming. This book is well written and approaches the various topics clearly and systematically. Unfortunately it does not provide quite enough detail to be used as a primary reference source, though it can be valuable if used along side another more detailed book such as 'Physiology' from Berne and Levy.

I successfully pass my Dental Nursing exam in 2004, It has fantasic sample exam questions and most of them came up in my exam. I highly recommend it for any student dental nurse.

Having sat the National Exam for dental nurses in may 2005 and passing, i would strongly reccomend any dental nurse studying either for the national or nvq to invest in this book.
I treated this book like my own personal bible whilst studying, its very well written and the questions are well set out and do not baffle you with big dental terms, its also very precice when explaining if you have answered a queston wrong, all in all an excellent book, my friend and i used to test each other during lunch breaks with the multiple choice questions. i will def be giving this book 5 stars.

I would not say it's a must-have for the National Certificate because I found lots of the questions are over and above what you actually need to know for the exam - or was I just lucky and it was easier this year? Also be careful because rules and regulations change so often and the book does contain some outdated information. Nevetheless, it is a big help in preparation for the exam. It's easy to use and I especially liked the fact that it not just tells you the right answers but gives detailed explanations even for the multiple chioce questions.

An excellent book giving basic information.
Helps with short answer questions required for the Exam and the layout of questions are identical to what you are faced with when sitting for your exam. I found this book great for helping fellow students and gaining confidence , and knowledge within the dental field.
A good scource of reference and revision. A must for all dental nurses wishing to gain the National Certificate of Dental Nurses.

This book Contains almost every question which could be asked in the national examination its a great help with revision. It covers all the parts of the examination and is good practice for the real thing.

As stated in the other reviews, this textbook is indeed comprehensive when it comes to conservative dentistry and the carious process. However, despite it displaying width of content it lacks in many other areas.

Some of the techniques described in the text are completely impractical. As a 2nd year BDS student I have attempted to put into practice many of the techniques. Usually the method employing my own common sense is far more successful, cost effective and kind to the patient.

The text is also exceptionally dry. Any lecturer asking that you read it before an exam or for a class test is asking a lot.

The text often contradicts what many lecturers say. In some instances it even contradicts itself. Beware also of the many misprints and paragraphs of text that contradict the captions beneath the images and pictures.

Considering this text has been published a number of times, you might expect that most of the contraindications would have been rectified. It sounds like it has been written by clinical academics who haven't practised in many years. I find a much more useful source of correct information is to be found in questioning lecturers and using internet sites. These are much better value for money.

This textbook was recommended to me both by my lecturers and the students in the year above me - and I have found it very useful. The picture step-by-step format makes it invaluable for those starting conservative dentistry for the first time, helping to bridge the gap between learning the theory and completing treatment. It also discusses patient management, including extra-oral examination.
This textbook is a good buy because of it's content, it's presentation and not least of all, it's applicability to a large part of the course, unlike many other textbooks recommended which are useful for a relatively short period of time.

I am using this book for year 1 BDS - the pictures are excellent and the text is really easy to understand.

There is a good introduction to the process of caries at the start of the book (although is this covered in more detail in other texts in the series - e.g. "essentials of dental caries").

It also gives useful information on the uses of the materials used (e.g. why amalgam is still one of the major filling materials) which I find very useful because to saves you having to consult a different text!

The names, pictures, uses and handling techniques of the dental instruments and materials is also very useful for students using them for the first time.

Overall an excellent book, recommended by many lecturers.

A handy text with every fact you're likely to be asked in viva's. Perfect for those last minute oh my god I've forgotten..... moments.

Fits perfectly in the pocket of a white coat.

The information, however, can be sparse and is sometimes inaccurate.

Really good book for guidance in how to manage typical cases which may come through the door. Gives a walk through on procedure that you may need to carry out with good explanation.

More useful for students who are in clinics.

Easy to read with text broken up with quality pictures. I would highly recommend this book.

This book is very readable. It's format and content are exactly what a dental student such as myself needs and wants to learn and revise from.
It shows you what real dentistry is like and what its about practically on a day to day basis, because the individual cases COULD actually walk into your practice or hospital.

This book teachs you how to train your thought processes to tackle each problem logically and systematically, and gives you the confidence to do so. The layout is excellent and the pictures and diagrams are a useful lifelong reference for all aspects of dentistry.

This book is very readable. It's format and content are exactly what a dental student such as myself needs and wants to learn and revise from.
It shows you what real dentistry is like and what its about practically on a day to day basis, because the individual cases COULD actually walk into your practice or hospital.

This book teachs you how to train your thought processes to tackle each problem logically and systematically, and gives you the confidence to do so. The layout is excellent and the pictures and diagrams are a useful lifelong reference for all aspects of dentistry.

As a student studying under B.J.Moxham in Cardiff University you may think that I'm biased in my judgement but in all honesty this book will be extremely helpful in your first year. In addition to this it is one of very few books that will also get you through a huge porportion of your second year course as well!! It contains all the anatomy of the head and neck you will cover in your first year and then in your second year it will take you through your oral ecosystems course(development of teeth etc.). To sum it this book is good value for money and concise and I would definately suggest you buy this as very few books can be said to be useful in your first and second year!!

as a first year dentist i would highly recommmed it to those out there who are 1st years too. the book is well detailed, maybe more than it should be , but it covers everything that it needs to do. the use of many histological and other general pictures helps immensely in understanding many of the topics. if your looking at buying berkovitz i would suggest you look at oral bioscience by d.b ferguson. it covers many of the same topics, maybe more to the point, but can be hard to understand. due to lack of diagrams/slides.

This book written by Dr berkovitz is absolutely excellent, there are lots of illustrations, each one with detailed information explaining what can be seen. The book is laid out very well and in a logical and easy to follow manner and the best thing is that it is written in english, by that i mean the language which most students understand and not the language that scientists speak. Dr bekovitz is probably the most leading scientist in this area and this is reflected in his book. This is excellent for people studying Oral anatomy but also for those who are just interested in the topic as it starts from the basics and proceeds in an easy to understand manner to the more detailed aspects. The only disadvantage is that it is quite big and doesn't fit into any normal size bags, but then the upside to that is that people on the trains read the title and think you are really clever!!

Well laid out. easy to read. lots of nice diagrams. ok so it won't get you honours points but should contain enough to pass and is far less intimidating than those huge physiology texts. great for preclinical medics. not enough detail for pure physiology students though.

Human Physiology is a useful introductory text to physiology, particularly for first year medical students who may find some of the more detailed texts somewhat overwhelming. This book is well written and approaches the various topics clearly and systematically. Unfortunately it does not provide quite enough detail to be used as a primary reference source, though it can be valuable if used along side another more detailed book such as 'Physiology' from Berne and Levy.

This book is easy to read but also gives enough details to cover the essentials of a human physiology course. The lay-out breaks it down into clear sections that make it easier to read and learn. It explains itself clearly and makes some of the more complicated issues easier to handle and digest. If you are having difficulty with another text then get/use this one!

I successfully pass my Dental Nursing exam in 2004, It has fantasic sample exam questions and most of them came up in my exam. I highly recommend it for any student dental nurse.

Having sat the National Exam for dental nurses in may 2005 and passing, i would strongly reccomend any dental nurse studying either for the national or nvq to invest in this book.
I treated this book like my own personal bible whilst studying, its very well written and the questions are well set out and do not baffle you with big dental terms, its also very precice when explaining if you have answered a queston wrong, all in all an excellent book, my friend and i used to test each other during lunch breaks with the multiple choice questions. i will def be giving this book 5 stars.

I would not say it's a must-have for the National Certificate because I found lots of the questions are over and above what you actually need to know for the exam - or was I just lucky and it was easier this year? Also be careful because rules and regulations change so often and the book does contain some outdated information. Nevetheless, it is a big help in preparation for the exam. It's easy to use and I especially liked the fact that it not just tells you the right answers but gives detailed explanations even for the multiple chioce questions.

Helps with short answer questions required for the Exam and the layout of questions are identical to what you are faced with when sitting for your exam. I found this book great for helping fellow students and gaining confidence , and knowledge within the dental field.

As stated in the other reviews, this textbook is indeed comprehensive when it comes to conservative dentistry and the carious process. However, despite it displaying width of content it lacks in many other areas.

Some of the techniques described in the text are completely impractical. As a 2nd year BDS student I have attempted to put into practice many of the techniques. Usually the method employing my own common sense is far more successful, cost effective and kind to the patient.

The text is also exceptionally dry. Any lecturer asking that you read it before an exam or for a class test is asking a lot.

The text often contradicts what many lecturers say. In some instances it even contradicts itself. Beware also of the many misprints and paragraphs of text that contradict the captions beneath the images and pictures.

Considering this text has been published a number of times, you might expect that most of the contraindications would have been rectified. It sounds like it has been written by clinical academics who haven't practised in many years. I find a much more useful source of correct information is to be found in questioning lecturers and using internet sites. These are much better value for money.

The picture step-by-step format makes it invaluable for those starting conservative dentistry for the first time, helping to bridge the gap between learning the theory and completing treatment. It also discusses patient management, including extra-oral examination.
This textbook is a good buy because of it's content, it's presentation and not least of all, it's applicability to a large part of the course, unlike many other textbooks recommended which are useful for a relatively short period of time.

I am using this book for year 1 BDS - the pictures are excellent and the text is really easy to understand.

There is a good introduction to the process of caries at the start of the book (although is this covered in more detail in other texts in the series - e.g. "essentials of dental caries").

It also gives useful information on the uses of the materials used (e.g. why amalgam is still one of the major filling materials) which I find very useful because to saves you having to consult a different text!

The names, pictures, uses and handling techniques of the dental instruments and materials is also very useful for students using them for the first time.

Overall an excellent book, recommended by many lecturers.

Really good book for guidance in how to manage typical cases which may come through the door. Gives a walk through on procedure that you may need to carry out with good explanation.

More useful for students who are in clinics.

Easy to read with text broken up with quality pictures. I would highly recommend this book.

I have been a big fan of this book.
It's so easy to read while still being informative and professional. Not all books manage to do so.
This edition has some important updates.
If you are an Orthodontic postgrad student or an Orthodontist who likes to go back to basics occassionally then this book is for you.

This is a very well illustrated book, which takes you step-by-step through the basics of tooth morpholgy.

It takes you through the individual teeth, both deciduous and permanent dentitions, pointing out differences between the separate teeth and also the variations from the left and right sides of the mouth.

These sections are easy to follow and are summarised in bullet-point form at the end of each tooth.

The book then goes on to endodontic anatomy, describing the root structure of each tooth in detail, along with details of formation and eruption dates for each.

This is a detailed, yet easy to understand dental morphology title, one which i have found extremely useful so far as a dental student, and one that I am certain I will put to good use again in the not too distant future.

This book is very readable. It's format and content are exactly what a dental student such as myself needs and wants to learn and revise from.
It shows you what real dentistry is like and what its about practically on a day to day basis, because the individual cases COULD actually walk into your practice or hospital.

This book teachs you how to train your thought processes to tackle each problem logically and systematically, and gives you the confidence to do so. The layout is excellent and the pictures and diagrams are a useful lifelong reference for all aspects of dentistry.

As a student studying under B.J.Moxham in Cardiff University you may think that I'm biased in my judgement but in all honesty this book will be extremely helpful in your first year. In addition to this it is one of very few books that will also get you through a huge porportion of your second year course as well!! It contains all the anatomy of the head and neck you will cover in your first year and then in your second year it will take you through your oral ecosystems course(development of teeth etc.). To sum it this book is good value for money and concise and I would definately suggest you buy this as very few books can be said to be useful in your first and second year!!

as a first year dentist i would highly recommmed it to those out there who are 1st years too. the book is well detailed, maybe more than it should be , but it covers everything that it needs to do. the use of many histological and other general pictures helps immensely in understanding many of the topics. if your looking at buying berkovitz i would suggest you look at oral bioscience by d.b ferguson. it covers many of the same topics, maybe more to the point, but can be hard to understand. due to lack of diagrams/slides.

This book written by Dr berkovitz is absolutely excellent, there are lots of illustrations, each one with detailed information explaining what can be seen. The book is laid out very well and in a logical and easy to follow manner and the best thing is that it is written in english, by that i mean the language which most students understand and not the language that scientists speak. Dr bekovitz is probably the most leading scientist in this area and this is reflected in his book. This is excellent for people studying Oral anatomy but also for those who are just interested in the topic as it starts from the basics and proceeds in an easy to understand manner to the more detailed aspects. The only disadvantage is that it is quite big and doesn't fit into any normal size bags, but then the upside to that is that people on the trains read the title and think you are really clever!!

I have been a big fan of this book.
It's so easy to read while still being informative and professional. Not all books manage to do so.
This edition has some important updates.
If you are an Orthodontic postgrad student or an Orthodontist who likes to go back to basics occassionally then this book is for you.

This is a very well illustrated book, which takes you step-by-step through the basics of tooth morpholgy.

It takes you through the individual teeth, both deciduous and permanent dentitions, pointing out differences between the separate teeth and also the variations from the left and right sides of the mouth.

These sections are easy to follow and are summarised in bullet-point form at the end of each tooth.

The book then goes on to endodontic anatomy, describing the root structure of each tooth in detail, along with details of formation and eruption dates for each.

This is a detailed, yet easy to understand dental morphology title, one which i have found extremely useful so far as a dental student, and one that I am certain I will put to good use again in the not too distant future.

This book is great for revision!

There are lots of pictures and histological slides, and is not loaded with text making it easier to read. There are summary boxes and flow diagrams. It also has information about 'normal' dental conditions such as caries and periodontitis and a section on medical emergencies.

I don't know how I'd pass without this book!

Being a fourth year dental student, this book has provided alot of information for oral medicine.

Alot of my lecturers use this book in their handouts, so when you read those handouts you know where to look afterwards. It has nice diagrams which are easy to understand and make your studying a bit less stressful.

What I also enjoyed in this book, is that it doesn't stick just to oral medicine, but it also takes you a step further giving you information concerning not only dental but medically relevant information as well.

This is an excellent book for dental students, it contains just the amount of information coupled with some remarkable colour images.

Don't let its title of Oral pathology and oral medicine mislead you to think that it is just a collection of slides - it has a lot of in depth knowledge in all areas relating to oral health as well as a section with the relevant medical aspects of dentistry covered in good detail. Its very easy to read and doesnt contain alot of waffle, the bullet point boxes highlight the relevant and important key features which are great for revision.

I thoroughly recommend this book for all dental undergraduate students.

This is a highly informative book and useful for all dental students. It provides concise factual information and relevant diagrams, as well as histological slides. It is also easy to read and interesting.

There are boxes listing key features of the diseases, for a useful revision aid, and there are logical flow diagrams showing differential diagnoses. The book covers the aspects of oral medicine and pathology in depth, but also provides information about medically compromised patients and common dental diseases, such as caries and periodontal disease.

As a BDS4 student I highly recommend this book.

Utterly indispensible.

A summary of all aspects of oral med and path, both hard tissue and soft tissue. Its catagorized by type of pathology, and subdivided from that into specific lesions. There's a lot of information on the commoner conditions, although the rarer ones are worth only one sparse paragraph.

Well illustrated with lots of good pictures of pathologies. The section on cysts (which are, after all, the things most likely to come up in exams) is particularly good.

Very useful are the summary tables which list all possible causes of red patches/white patches/radiolucencies/whatever and their distinguishing features. They're easy to understand, memorize and regurgitate in exams.

Well laid out. easy to read. lots of nice diagrams. ok so it won't get you honours points but should contain enough to pass and is far less intimidating than those huge physiology texts. great for preclinical medics. not enough detail for pure physiology students though.

A useful starting point for
