This book is an absolute must for anyone with an interest in first aid or who is considering ambulance work. It contains a comprehensive guide to immediate first aid. It is considered the bible among those who practice first aid. Of course a basic first aid course with a qualified instructor is a must for everyone, this book will provide you with a good reference guide. Simply the best available, 02 Nov 2007
Why this manual?
Because it is created by a collaboration of the UK's premier providers of first aid so you know your getting the best advice possible. Also teamed up with Dorling Kindersley having the reputation of being one of the worlds leading publishers of illustrated books make this manual the most accessible and easiest to use with the highest quality images and text and easy to follow step by step guides what more could you possibly want from a first aid manual.
Over the years I have seen many first aid manuals, however none of them have impressed me as consistently as this, quite simply this is the only manual I trust. Everything you need to know plus a little more make this a must have book that every home and business should not be without.

This book is an excellent 1 stop manual for all the essential first aid techniques valuable to anyone. Essential for the home or work but don't just leave it on the shelf. encourage all the family to read and become familier with its contents. Well written with pictures and diagrams.
The Official Text for First Aiders, 10 Mar 2004
This is the official text for first aiders in the UK. It is quite well laid out, with plenty of graphic (but not gory!) illustrations of interventions and is easy-to-understand. As a Registered First Aid Instructor/Examiner I find the previous edition to have been better. For starters it was clearer on the management of the unconscious spinally injured casualty, whereas a bit of exegesis is required with this text to arrive at pretty much the same conclusion as the 7th edition (but just more subtly put - a purposefully grey area perhaps?). There are other flaws. Some of the graphics don't correlate with best practice, and the same can be said about the text in places. However, this is no fault of the book itself, which is a must-have for First Aiders as it reflects the official line on approaches and interventions. Flawed yet indispensable, with plenty of food for critical thought!

At last, the Paramedic Bible in English. Well done. Also much improved graphics pics etc. An excellent / essential resource for anyone working in pre hospital. Going from basics to advanced procedures packed with useful information. Easy to read offering excellent information on some advanced procedures. Well recommended.

An excellent textbook which covers all aspects of 'out of hospital' care, this surely will become the standard textbook for all future paramedic courses being held in the UK

I also have to declare an interest - as a chapter sub-author I agreed to take part in the project as I believed it would fill a gap in pre-hospital literature.
The book itself more than exceeded my expectations. It is a comprehensive book which can benefit the reader at all skill levels and in all sectors of pre-hospital care, from newly qualified routine care staff to paramedic practitioners and pre-hospital doctors. Information is clear and well laid out making it interseting and accessible, but carries enough depth to make it a relevant and useful read even for familiar topics. The format will suit a variety of learning styles with summaries, reviews and self-assessment. Despite the improvements and much needed anglicisation, the book still pays respect to Nancy Caroline as a pathfinder in this field of medicine.
Perhaps not the cheapest but it's certainly good value.

This new, anglo version of the cardinal emergency care text is a must for all paramedics, ECA/Techs and ECPs. The chapters are clearly written, informative and have upto date images and contemporary detail. This is both a fantastic study aid and source of reference material. It is well worth investing in this historically pivital pre-hospital text book. Well done NC.

Great stuff, I have always found this series of books to be an excellant resource for helping me develop my paramedic skills and knowledge, though have admitedly found it tiresome deciding which parts of the book I could incorporate into my own practice. This new version though carries on the all the good tradtions of previous books i.e. clarity, ease of reading and pick-upability (I do not know if this a real word, if not it should be) but all parts of it are now relevant to me and my practice, I am sure it will prove to be a great purchase for all who buy it.

Entertaining but ..., 13 Nov 2008
Although I enjoyed around half of the entries and found them entertaining and often very touching, this book should come with a warning.... for all NHS staff who work outside of the ambulance service! While the author acknowledges that his comments are not meant to tar all NHS employees with the same brush, and definitely the shortages of staff put pressure on all, there are several occasions where doctors, nurses and midwives are made out to be rude and uncaring and often this book descends into ranting about these professional groups. While dipping in and out of a blog the odd rant is ok, I found that in a book form these frequent angry entries got in the way of the flow of an otherwise enjoyble book.

As someone who is about to embark on a Paramedic-in-training programme, I bought this book with the hope that it would give me a thorough understanding of what is in front of me. It has. It's hilarious, upsetting, insightful and extremely interesting to get such an inside perspective. I highly recommend this book to anyone - it's an eye opener. I can't wait to get started.

Unfortunately for me, I also finished this book in just about two days - but have now started to read Reynolds' blog, Random Acts of Reality, everyday!
This book gets you down the street level and tells you what it is like to be an EMT serving the community. I live in Los Angeles, but can easily relate to each and every story told in this book. The stories are short one or two pagers that are easy to get through and leave wanting to get to the next one.
Tom Reynolds not only conveys the passion for his job, but the utter frustration felt by the EMS commmunity worldwide when people abuse the system. From the repeat drug user on his nth overdose this month to the pregnant woman calling for an ambulance because she doesn't want to pay for a taxi to take her the 300 yards to the hospital - it's all here.
If you've ever wondered what was going on with the sirens and flashing lights down the street, read this book!

great book. Brilliant description of working in the ambulance service. You warm to tom immediately. I read this book after reading a reccomendation for it in the book in stitche; the highs and lows of life as an A&E doctor. Both books are great - get them both

Essential for med school revision, 10 Feb 2007
I bought this book a week ago and my confidence in diagnosis has increased ten fold. Not only can you pick the symptom you think is most relavent and look up what could be causing it, you also get a list of conditions with associated features, and how the condition is confirmed.
In real terms when on for example A&E, you get a patient with difuse hair loss (I had no idea where to start on this one) and you get given options of cytotoxic drugs , iron deficiency, sever illness, hypogonadism and recent pregnancy. You would then see what the symptoms of each are, and how you would confirm each.
It made the situation of coming away from a patient totally confused much easier. I am also better at coming up with differentials now.

This book is one of the most comprehensive I have read on clinical diagnosis and provides a checklist of discriminating criteria for many of the symptoms and signs encountered in clinical practice. My only criticism of this book, from the point of view of a finals student, is that it doesn't specifically list investigations that would be required when a patient has a list of 2 or 3 possible differentials after the history/examination, which are often asked in examinations. In this regard, "Differential Diagnosis" is a useful book to read alongside this one.

Unfortunately for me, I also finished this book in just about two days - but have now started to read Reynolds' blog, Random Acts of Reality, everyday!
This book gets you down the street level and tells you what it is like to be an EMT serving the community. I live in Los Angeles, but can easily relate to each and every story told in this book. The stories are short one or two pagers that are easy to get through and leave wanting to get to the next one.
Tom Reynolds not only conveys the passion for his job, but the utter frustration felt by the EMS commmunity worldwide when people abuse the system. From the repeat drug user on his nth overdose this month to the pregnant woman calling for an ambulance because she doesn't want to pay for a taxi to take her the 300 yards to the hospital - it's all here.
If you've ever wondered what was going on with the sirens and flashing lights down the street, read this book!

great book. Brilliant description of working in the ambulance service. You warm to tom immediately. I read this book after reading a reccomendation for it in the book in stitche; the highs and lows of life as an A&E doctor. Both books are great - get them both

I bought this book a week ago and my confidence in diagnosis has increased ten fold. Not only can you pick the symptom you think is most relavent and look up what could be causing it, you also get a list of conditions with associated features, and how the condition is confirmed.
In real terms when on for example A&E, you get a patient with difuse hair loss (I had no idea where to start on this one) and you get given options of cytotoxic drugs , iron deficiency, sever illness, hypogonadism and recent pregnancy. You would then see what the symptoms of each are, and how you would confirm each.
It made the situation of coming away from a patient totally confused much easier. I am also better at coming up with differentials now.

This book is one of the most comprehensive I have read on clinical diagnosis and provides a checklist of discriminating criteria for many of the symptoms and signs encountered in clinical practice. My only criticism of this book, from the point of view of a finals student, is that it doesn't specifically list investigations that would be required when a patient has a list of 2 or 3 possible differentials after the history/examination, which are often asked in examinations. In this regard, "Differential Diagnosis" is a useful book to read alongside this one.

Cicerone have just published the tenth edition of (Pocket) First Aid and Wilderness Medicine by mountaineering doctors Jim Duff and Peter Gormly. For those people, such as wildlife film-makers, who work out in the wilds, distant from the nearest hospital, this is surely an essential item to add to the packing list. Despite being small enough to fit in a jacket pocket or slip in a rucksack, the book is packed with information about almost every sort of health-related problem you may encounter in the bush. There are numerous flow charts, enabling you to assess situations and determine the action required - this could not only be life-saving but could also prevent costly mistakes (for example where evacuation is not required). Some of the described bush-treatments are a revalation! There are also useful charts of medications and suggested contents of first aid kits. This book is an absolute must for anyone with an interest in first aid or who is considering ambulance work. It contains a comprehensive guide to immediate first aid. It is considered the bible among those who practice first aid. Of course a basic first aid course with a qualified instructor is a must for everyone, this book will provide you with a good reference guide. Simply the best available, 02 Nov 2007

Also teamed up with Dorling Kindersley having the reputation of being one of the worlds leading publishers of illustrated books make this manual the most accessible and easiest to use with the highest quality images and text and easy to follow step by step guides what more could you possibly want from a first aid manual.
Over the years I have seen many first aid manuals, however none of them have impressed me as consistently as this, quite simply this is the only manual I trust. Everything you need to know plus a little more make this a must have book that every home and business should not be without.

many people are used to online books you can store them in your mobile and be almost sure always its within your reach and read it while your free... simply look search engine with keyword of first aid manual and see how much information are available most are updated to the moment no need publishing house... on other hand for those who wants printed material is nice book ilustrative but not animated like websites

This book is an excellent 1 stop manual for all the essential first aid techniques valuable to anyone. Essential for the home or work but don't just leave it on the shelf. encourage all the family to read and become familier with its contents. Well written with pictures and diagrams.
The Official Text for First Aiders, 10 Mar 2004
This is the official text for first aiders in the UK. It is quite well laid out, with plenty of graphic (but not gory!) illustrations of interventions and is easy-to-understand. As a Registered First Aid Instructor/Examiner I find the previous edition to have been better. For starters it was clearer on the management of the unconscious spinally injured casualty, whereas a bit of exegesis is required with this text to arrive at pretty much the same conclusion as the 7th edition (but just more subtly put - a purposefully grey area perhaps?). There are other flaws. Some of the graphics don't correlate with best practice, and the same can be said about the text in places. However, this is no fault of the book itself, which is a must-have for First Aiders as it reflects the official line on approaches and interventions. Flawed yet indispensable, with plenty of food for critical thought!

At last, the Paramedic Bible in English. Well done. Also much improved graphics pics etc. An excellent / essential resource for anyone working in pre hospital. Going from basics to advanced procedures packed with useful information. Easy to read offering excellent information on some advanced procedures. Well recommended.

An excellent textbook which covers all aspects of 'out of hospital' care, this surely will become the standard textbook for all future paramedic courses being held in the UK
The best book of its kind, 30 Jan 2008
I also have to declare an interest - as a chapter sub-author I agreed to take part in the project as I believed it would fill a gap in pre-hospital literature.
The book itself more than exceeded my expectations. It is a comprehensive book which can benefit the reader at all skill levels and in all sectors of pre-hospital care, from newly qualified routine care staff to paramedic practitioners and pre-hospital doctors. Information is clear and well laid out making it interseting and accessible, but carries enough depth to make it a relevant and useful read even for familiar topics. The format will suit a variety of learning styles with summaries, reviews and self-assessment. Despite the improvements and much needed anglicisation, the book still pays respect to Nancy Caroline as a pathfinder in this field of medicine.
Perhaps not the cheapest but it's certainly good value.

This new, anglo version of the cardinal emergency care text is a must for all paramedics, ECA/Techs and ECPs. The chapters are clearly written, informative and have upto date images and contemporary detail. This is both a fantastic study aid and source of reference material. It is well worth investing in this historically pivital pre-hospital text book. Well done NC.

Great stuff, I have always found this series of books to be an excellant resource for helping me develop my paramedic skills and knowledge, though have admitedly found it tiresome deciding which parts of the book I could incorporate into my own practice. This new version though carries on the all the good tradtions of previous books i.e. clarity, ease of reading and pick-upability (I do not know if this a real word, if not it should be) but all parts of it are now relevant to me and my practice, I am sure it will prove to be a great purchase for all who buy it.
Entertaining but ..., 13 Nov 2008
Although I enjoyed around half of the entries and found them entertaining and often very touching, this book should come with a warning.... for all NHS staff who work outside of the ambulance service! While the author acknowledges that his comments are not meant to tar all NHS employees with the same brush, and definitely the shortages of staff put pressure on all, there are several occasions where doctors, nurses and midwives are made out to be rude and uncaring and often this book descends into ranting about these professional groups. While dipping in and out of a blog the odd rant is ok, I found that in a book form these frequent angry entries got in the way of the flow of an otherwise enjoyble book.

As someone who is about to embark on a Paramedic-in-training programme, I bought this book with the hope that it would give me a thorough understanding of what is in front of me. It has. It's hilarious, upsetting, insightful and extremely interesting to get such an inside perspective. I highly recommend this book to anyone - it's an eye opener. I can't wait to get started.

This new book by an experienced ex A&E Nurse who is now the lead academic on the Paramedic programme at Greenwich University has drawn together an excellent mix of Nurses and Paramedic Tutors to give a basic foundation on the Psycho-Social aspects often missed by the traditional IHCD programmes. This book is a great introduction to the basics of communications, ethisc, law, socialogy and psychology ( as relating to Paramedics)that are core underpinning elements to ensure that the future paramedic practitioner is bult on a broader foundation.
I have to declare that I put together the CPD chapter at the end of the book, but trully believe that this is the first of this genre of book and will be an excellent purchase for any Tech moving on to a Paramedic programme or a newly employed student paramedic wanting to get a broad grasp before adding to the bookshelf.

I needed a comprehensive book which would explain the basics for my first time in the ICU (I am a medicine student) and that would be easy to carry around in my coat pocket. This is it. I love it.

This pocket-sized book provides a very concise reference for common conditions found in critical care, and their treatments. There are some effective diagrams that simplify some of the more complex concepts such as septic shock. However, the instuctions for 'management' of conditions, whilst brief and to-the-point, could do with more detail in places. Additionally, the book contains a large number of blank pages, supposedly for the reader to add their own notes. For a book costing £25, i would expect these pages to contain extra information! Nevertheless, a good source for quick reference.

Great stuff, I have always found this series of books to be an excellant resource for helping me develop my paramedic skills and knowledge, though have admitedly found it tiresome deciding which parts of the book I could incorporate into my own practice. This new version though carries on the all the good tradtions of previous books i.e. clarity, ease of reading and pick-upability (I do not know if this a real word, if not it should be) but all parts of it are now relevant to me and my practice, I am sure it will prove to be a great purchase for all who buy it.
Entertaining but ..., 13 Nov 2008
Although I enjoyed around half of the entries and found them entertaining and often very touching, this book should come with a warning.... for all NHS staff who work outside of the ambulance service! While the author acknowledges that his comments are not meant to tar all NHS employees with the same brush, and definitely the shortages of staff put pressure on all, there are several occasions where doctors, nurses and midwives are made out to be rude and uncaring and often this book descends into ranting about these professional groups. While dipping in and out of a blog the odd rant is ok, I found that in a book form these frequent angry entries got in the way of the flow of an otherwise enjoyble book.

As someone who is about to embark on a Paramedic-in-training programme, I bought this book with the hope that it would give me a thorough understanding of what is in front of me. It has. It's hilarious, upsetting, insightful and extremely interesting to get such an inside perspective. I highly recommend this book to anyone - it's an eye opener. I can't wait to get started.

Unfortunately for me, I also finished this book in just about two days - but have now started to read Reynolds' blog, Random Acts of Reality, everyday!
This book gets you down the street level and tells you what it is like to be an EMT serving the community. I live in Los Angeles, but can easily relate to each and every story told in this book. The stories are short one or two pagers that are easy to get through and leave wanting to get to the next one.
Tom Reynolds not only conveys the passion for his job, but the utter frustration felt by the EMS commmunity worldwide when people abuse the system. From the repeat drug user on his nth overdose this month to the pregnant woman calling for an ambulance because she doesn't want to pay for a taxi to take her the 300 yards to the hospital - it's all here.
If you've ever wondered what was going on with the sirens and flashing lights down the street, read this book!

I bought this book a week ago and my confidence in diagnosis has increased ten fold. Not only can you pick the symptom you think is most relavent and look up what could be causing it, you also get a list of conditions with associated features, and how the condition is confirmed.
In real terms when on for example A&E, you get a patient with difuse hair loss (I had no idea where to start on this one) and you get given options of cytotoxic drugs , iron deficiency, sever illness, hypogonadism and recent pregnancy. You would then see what the symptoms of each are, and how you would confirm each.
It made the situation of coming away from a patient totally confused much easier. I am also better at coming up with differentials now.

This book is one of the most comprehensive I have read on clinical diagnosis and provides a checklist of discriminating criteria for many of the symptoms and signs encountered in clinical practice. My only criticism of this book, from the point of view of a finals student, is that it doesn't specifically list investigations that would be required when a patient has a list of 2 or 3 possible differentials after the history/examination, which are often asked in examinations. In this regard, "Differential Diagnosis" is a useful book to read alongside this one.

For those people, such as wildlife film-makers, who work out in the wilds, distant from the nearest hospital, this is surely an essential item to add to the packing list. Despite being small enough to fit in a jacket pocket or slip in a rucksack, the book is packed with information about almost every sort of health-related problem you may encounter in the bush. There are numerous flow charts, enabling you to assess situations and determine the action required - this could not only be life-saving but could also prevent costly mistakes (for example where evacuation is not required). Some of the described bush-treatments are a revalation! There are also useful charts of medications and suggested contents of first aid kits. This new book by an experienced ex A&E Nurse who is now the lead academic on the Paramedic programme at Greenwich University has drawn together an excellent mix of Nurses and Paramedic Tutors to give a basic foundation on the Psycho-Social aspects often missed by the traditional IHCD programmes. This book is a great introduction to the basics of communications, ethisc, law, socialogy and psychology ( as relating to Paramedics)that are core underpinning elements to ensure that the future paramedic practitioner is bult on a broader foundation.
I have to declare that I put together the CPD chapter at the end of the book, but trully believe that this is the first of this genre of book and will be an excellent purchase for any Tech moving on to a Paramedic programme or a newly employed student paramedic wanting to get a broad grasp before adding to the bookshelf.

I needed a comprehensive book which would explain the basics for my first time in the ICU (I am a medicine student) and that would be easy to carry around in my coat pocket. This is it. I love it.

This pocket-sized book provides a very concise reference for common conditions found in critical care, and their treatments. There are some effective diagrams that simplify some of the more complex concepts such as septic shock. However, the instuctions for 'management' of conditions, whilst brief and to-the-point, could do with more detail in places. Additionally, the book contains a large number of blank pages, supposedly for the reader to add their own notes. For a book costing £25, i would expect these pages to contain extra information! Nevertheless, a good source for quick reference.

It is considered the bible among those who practice first aid. This book is an excellent 1 stop manual for all the essential first aid techniques valuable to anyone. Essential for the home or work but don't just leave it on the shelf. encourage all the family to read and become familier with its contents. Well written with pictures and diagrams.
The Official Text for First Aiders, 10 Mar 2004
This is the official text for first aiders in the UK. It is quite well laid out, with plenty of graphic (but not gory!) illustrations of interventions and is easy-to-understand. As a Registered First Aid Instructor/Examiner I find the previous edition to have been better. For starters it was clearer on the management of the unconscious spinally injured casualty, whereas a bit of exegesis is required with this text to arrive at pretty much the same conclusion as the 7th edition (but just more subtly put - a purposefully grey area perhaps?). There are other flaws. Some of the graphics don't correlate with best practice, and the same can be said about the text in places. However, this is no fault of the book itself, which is a must-have for First Aiders as it reflects the official line on approaches and interventions. Flawed yet indispensable, with plenty of food for critical thought!

At last, the Paramedic Bible in English. Well done. Also much improved graphics pics etc. An excellent / essential resource for anyone working in pre hospital. Going from basics to advanced procedures packed with useful information. Easy to read offering excellent information on some advanced procedures. Well recommended.

The best book of its kind, 30 Jan 2008
I also have to declare an interest - as a chapter sub-author I agreed to take part in the project as I believed it would fill a gap in pre-hospital literature.
The book itself more than exceeded my expectations. It is a comprehensive book which can benefit the reader at all skill levels and in all sectors of pre-hospital care, from newly qualified routine care staff to paramedic practitioners and pre-hospital doctors. Information is clear and well laid out making it interseting and accessible, but carries enough depth to make it a relevant and useful read even for familiar topics. The format will suit a variety of learning styles with summaries, reviews and self-assessment. Despite the improvements and much needed anglicisation, the book still pays respect to Nancy Caroline as a pathfinder in this field of medicine.
Perhaps not the cheapest but it's certainly good value.

This new, anglo version of the cardinal emergency care text is a must for all paramedics, ECA/Techs and ECPs. The chapters are clearly written, informative and have upto date images and contemporary detail. This is both a fantastic study aid and source of reference material. It is well worth investing in this historically pivital pre-hospital text book. Well done NC.

Exceellent starter to pre hospital care study, 12 Aug 2007
i found the book an invaluable platform to launch the interest of a large group of military medics. a small handful of guys have ordered this book as its a well structured study guide which is relatively simple to understand. If you want more indepth study books then there are a few better ones out there, i also own the US military PHTLS book but preferred this as a stepping stone in preparation for an upcoming deployment to afghanistan.

This is a useful background book written predominately by Doctors for emergency personnel. The 2nd edition has a Paramedic involved in the writing, which is certainly in the right direction. Shame it is full of black and white pictures. There are more useful books available on the shelf

As a Paramedic this is an easy to use textbook with good explaining done, although there are qute a few graph's displayed these tend to be a bit minimalistic especially when comes done to explaning movements. I would definetely advise further reading for an indeep study. At the end of each chapter there is a list of books that would help. This would not be my first choice of books it is certainly worth having as cross reference in studies.
