Dont let the title put you off, 05 Oct 2008
This is a wonderfully honest and open book. The four authors are experts in their respective fields of psychology, psychiatry, psychotherapy and meditation so you know right from the start your in good hands. There are too many books out there written by so called experts that really do more harm then good this however is a breath of fresh air.
You dont have to be depressed to find value in this book in fact the authors recommend steering clear of it if you are suffering with a bout of depression.Read this book when you have some clarity in your mind, try to implement the techniques and maybe a clear mind will become more common. This book will show you how to befriend your feelings even the bad ones and you will look at the breath in a whole new light. The body scan is introduced and also the three minute breathing space and at the end of the book is an eight week mindfulness program that i personally found helpful and intriguing. This book is accompanied by a CD of guided meditations that will prove to be invaluable. This is a must read for anyone interested in mindfulness or looking for some relief from the "black dog".
There is light at the end of the tunnel!!
Simply Fantastic, 24 Sep 2008
Before I start I just have to say that this book is FANTASTIC and is a really exciting step forward in the treatment of depression. At last - a non-drug approach to one of societies most overwhelming problems: Depression.
As a person who has suffered from depression in the past and as a therapist, I truly enjoyed this book from start to finish. It told me all I needed to know about mindfulness and taught me the process in a very comprehensive yet easy to follow way.
I had read several books on mindfulness by various authors before receiving this book. Compared against the others that I read, I found this one to be the most clear, so even if you do not suffer from depression, but are looking to learn mindfulness, this book could be just what you are looking for. The other bonus with this title is that it is not repetitive like similar titles I have read - it just tells you what you need to know.
Some observations that I would make though are as follows.
1. There were a few spelling and grammar mistakes throughout, however they didn't affect my `reading flow', so this should be an issue.
2. The layout of the separate sections could have been better laid out. It shows you how to follow an 8 week program in the end of the last chapter. I would have liked to seen it laid out so that you read and practice a section at a time rather than learning everything before you start.
3. There is a warning in a couple of places in the book that warn you not to us the program in is entirely now if you are experiencing an episode of clinical depression. This somewhat confused me as the title of the book is `The Mindful Way THROUGH Depression.
4. The book comes with a CD... It was recorded using the voice of one of the authors, Jon Kabat Zinn. The meditation entitled `The Body Scan' seemed a little rushed. As a personal preference, I used an old CD that I had from Jon that was much better quality for me and worked well.
These were the only negative things that I picked up and wanted to include them to make this review as balanced as possible. There were so many things right with this book though that the comments above are small concerns against all the things that you will get out of reading it.
So in conclusion: this book is easy to follow, very inspirational and motivates you to learn mindfulness and overcome your depression. It is simply fantastic.

This book is an excellent guide to the technique of mindfulness. The principles of mindfulness are essentially very simple but amazingly effective. It's something that we all forget to do, and this book serves as a powerful reminder to bring our attention away from our thoughts and into our experience. The authors are free of academic jargon and are clearly passionate and extremely knowledgeable about the benefits of mindfulness, and the book is clearly not just for people who might be suffering from depression. I recommend it highly along with Eckhart Tolle's the Power of Now, and Steve Taylor's Making Time Making Time: Why Time Seems to Pass at Different Speeds and How to Control It, which uses mindfulness as a way of living in the present and becoming free of the future and the past.
The Penny Dropped, 14 Jun 2008
Having suffered depression for 2 years following a particular incident and very bad year this book allowed me to connect my emotional and physical systoms. Explaining in plain english what to do to stop the self turmoil. I am not saying this offers a cure but it certainly offers everyday coping mechanisims that are easy to introduce and stop decline. Highly recommended.
Good Sound Advice, 02 Jun 2008
This book holds advice that will help anyone. The wisdom of the practice of Mindfulness Meditation is the key. I highly recommend it along with 'Sacred Space' by Elizabeth Bailey.

Indispensable, 09 May 2008
Have had every edition and I still carry a copy in my bag. Anyone doing acute takes who thinks they don't need to reflect on some aspects of some cases will come to grief. I am reassured when I see junior docs carrying a well worn copy.
Brilliant , 05 Feb 2008
This new book is even better than the 6th edition as its tiny! Meaning it's even easier to put in your bag/pocket and delve into on ward rounds/acute takes when your unsure of diagnosis/what to do next!
possible, THE best medical book out there...of all time, 02 Jan 2008
Guys, and gals, this book doesn't even need an introduction. Being only a 2nd year medic, I thought I'd get this now for later usuage, but it really has helped me out so much already. From the handy revision of essential anatomy and physiology for key conditions, to the layout, including advice on OSCEs, emergencies and much more, this book truly is a life saver, and should be given to every 1st year medical student, as it will benefit them for the rest of their career. What are you waiting for, buy it now, and lap it up!! Invaluable!!
Must have for med students!!, 30 Dec 2007
This book covers all areas of internal medicine and surgery in a clear concise way and whats more is that its easy to carry around when your on the wards. This book covers everything from aetiology, epidemiology, clinical features through to the necessary investigations and management of varying conditions. I dont actually know a medical student who doesn't own it!
Perfect for medical students for several reasons:
- Easy to carry
- Includes medical pneumonics (they make its so much easier to remember)
- concise - makes a great revision tool to test your clinical partner
- covers such a broad spectrum of topics
- the radiographs, CT images, MRI section is definately worth a read!!
- it contains evidence-based medicine with easy links to websites
...could it be any better??
The best ever, a must have, 28 Jul 2007
This 7th edition of OHCM, while retaining the much loved concise and essence of the previous editions has been greatly revised, improved and updated. It contains a new chapter on radiology, new information on how to handle common calls and a wider coverage of medications and doses, clinical skills and surgery. The best feature has to be the integrated colour illustrations with pictures and cartoons; and tons of radiographs, CT images, MR1 images etc. The layout is very reader friendly. This is an invaluable study aid for plab and all medical exams. It also has a PDA version, and web links from the book for instant access to evidence based clinical information. This is a must have and if you have a previous edition it is worth the upgrade.

I have read a number of books in the overcoming series and they were all helpful. This book addresses depression in a kind, understanding and compassionate way. It looks at things that I never understood about depression, such as issues around perfectionism and anger. I was recommended to the overcoming books by a friend ... I could honestly say they have been a lifesaver in difficult times and I wouldn't hesitate in passing on that recommendation.
well done, 24 Oct 2008
i came across this book after buying another book
[the calling of your true self] it was under this book as people who bought this book also bought this one, glad i came across both as i can certainly say both have brought me back to a better way of thinking, and lifted me from my dark hole, recommend both as one helps the other in a funny kind of way
a positive step forward, 05 Oct 2008
I don't think this book is not for anyone who is in the middle of a deep depression though it might help their family and friends to understand a bit of what is going on in their mind. Bu it and save it for when you start to feel a bit better. It also shouldn't just be used on its own but as an extra to the help your GP can give you.
As someone who has suffered chronic depression throughout my adult life I have found this book invaluable. Not only has it helped me to understand what was/is happening to me but has been good to dip in and out of.
There are practical exercises to do, it asks you some very difficult questions and you may find you pick it up and put it down a lot of times before you feel up to reading it but I think this is an excellent book which has helped me through some very dark times.
My crutch, 11 Apr 2008
I was lent this book by my CPN not long after I was first diagnosed with quite severe depression in August 2007 & it soon became something of a crutch for me - I had to order a copy for myself so her other patients could benefit from her copy. I agree that, initally at least, it probably wouldn't work on its own but in conjunction with therapy and/or medication it is a great book. It was good to read & think 'I know that feeling' - it made me feel like there was still some fine thread linking me to the world people around me inhabit.
In a strange way it helps that Paul Gilbert is a clinical psychologist who has himself suffered with depression; it means he writes in both a practical and informative style. The book is medical without being hard to follow & helpful without being pink fluffy cloudy.
overcoming depression, 28 Mar 2008
Having had a 12 month bout of depression and ending up on medication, I was advised to read this book. It offers a fascinating insight into how our thoughts and feelings can be misinterpreted and gives methods into dealing with negativity which often leads to depression. The book does require some commitment but once you start to feel better and start to understand your thought processes, you want to continue reading and learn more. I want to work through the whole series!

For me, it is faultless and if you are going to find one book that will actually help you to move forward postively in your life, this is the one. Too often, these kinds of books outline ideas to move forward and change things without actually giving any strong background as to why this will happen. This book does exactly that and more. I have read this once and intend to read it again and again. Whats more it has exercises designed to structure the process of making change. That is why it is going to be read many times. Anthony Robbins presents himself sincerely and inspires total confidence in what he is trying to help you to achieve. I have only read it once and im already feeling my mindset change. I now intend to reread it with an emphasis on implementing his methodology fully.
Im almost overwhelmed by the level of attention to detail he gives to his approach.
Forget the rest and buy this.

When I first dipped into this book I did not think it was for me. There was too much 'loud' stuff. I could envisage 'group hugs' and the American way of doing things. It felt way too touchy-feely for me; however, I contined and was ultimately so pleased that I did. Robbins has such a way with writing and inspiring it is quite clear why he is the person he is today.
Who can Argue with Success?, 24 Aug 2008
Awaken the Giant Within encourages taking control of ones life to promote positive change. Robbins has read extensively on human development and has rolled many worthwhile concepts into his book. He explores topics including belief systems, how to change, positive decision making, destroying blocks to success and more. This book gives a good overview of how to take better control of one's like.
The reading is quick, but he could have been somewhat less verbose and get the same points across. Then again, it is a relatively minor point if this is what is needed to motivate people to take control of their lives.
Although interesting, Robbin's book did not change me significantly. Almost all of his concepts can be found in other sources. However, Robbins work has helped many people a great deal...and it would be unwise to argue with this success!
The Re-Discovery of Common Sense: A Guide To: The Lost Art of Critical Thinking
It's what you make it, 24 Apr 2008
You will read a lot of conflicting reviews about this book. Most are good, some are OK and then others claim that Robbins is a con-artist hell bent on brainwashing gullible folks to fleece them of their money by selling some limp 'positive thinking' dream.
The truth with many things is in the eye of the beholder. What it isn't is some 'positive thinking' book designed to make you oblivious to life's difficulties and claiming that life is easy. Life isn't easy. This is why so many of us find it challenging. If you choose to read this book from a point of curiosity, you should find it interesting. If you read it intent on doing the exercises with a view to having the courage to make changes in your life, it can be life transforming; - but you must want it to be. It won't just happen.
Robbins makes the point that everything starts with 'personal power', the ability to take consistent action in the direction of your chosen destination. What holds us back in moving our lives forward is our reluctance to move out of our emotional comfort zones. The key reason for this is fear. As adults, we call it stress or angst or any other number of names but it all comes down to the same thing. We are bothered by what others think and say, we do conform, we are scared of getting rejected or of failing so we opt to stay in unhappy relationships, dead-end jobs, adapt to low earnings and be unhappy in the process and avoid risk.
This book will show you some very powerful strategies in taking control of your thinking and starting to move in the right direction. The earlier chapter on the power of decisions is a must. Robbins makes the point that a true decision means no going back, its not a 'should' or a 'ought' but a true emotional conviction. This book will give you the power to make those decisions and the strategies to manage your emotions in the midst of the emotional discomfort you will experience.
Too many people who have not been content with their lives can testify to this books effectivness. I was someone who faced some major challenges in my life which caused me to retreat into my comfort zone. Doing what I knew I should be doing was avoided and procrastination was the order of the day as far as work was concerned. This book gave me the courage to change and made me realise that any challenges or gain we experience in life requires courage and will make us feel uncomfortable.
Its only by experiencing emotional discomfort that we achieve emotional growth. Yes, it can be scary but its all down to whether you want it or not. If you do, this book will help..

It is simply fantastic.

wonderful, 07 Jul 2008

I could honestly say they have been a lifesaver in difficult times and I wouldn't hesitate in passing on that recommendation.

i came across this book after buying another book

A very useful book. Easy to read and understand with good use of photographs. Well worth purchasing
An easy and interesting read, 12 Nov 1999
A most informative, and enjoyable book to read. Clear and understandable text and pictures, without loads of medical or jargon words. A great source of help & interest for my Sports Massage Therapy Diploma.
I'm recommending this to all my coaching clients, 01 Sep 2008
I cannot recommend this book enough! Aside from the fact that I have found it personally life-changing (the simple heart-brain breathing exercise in the first chapter is worth many times the cost of the book on its own), I have, in the past few months, recommended it to many of my life coaching clients. They have all been delighted with it too.
Everyone should read this book, whether depressed or not!, 14 Apr 2008
This is a brilliant book. The balance of advice is excellent, from medical to common sense to alternative therapies, this man has a really sound outlook on life. It's not just psychological advice either ~ the chapters about doing voluntary work, exercise and nutrition are very helpful too and are important factors often forgotten by people looking for more complicated answers.
It confirmed some ideas I'd read elsewhere and gave me new ideas also.
If you're wavering about whether to buy this book or not, don't hesitate, buy it! It's well worth the money and time to invest in your wellbeing and life.

I think this book is a must for every adult reader. If everyone read it and used the self-help tools inside its covers, then the world would be a happier place - and they would feel happier too.
Is it too good to be true? I hope not!!, 31 May 2007
Still only half way through the book, however I am finding it both fascinating and enlightening. Assuming that each example David uses is factually correct, this book has to be a recommended read for all physicians and patients alike. It seems to me that the traditional/drug based methods should be used only in severe cases, and all of these ideas should be tried first.
For years alternative therapists and practitioners have applauded the use of one or more of these techniques, and may be a book like this can help enlighten the practise of mental healing and cure many many people.

It is simply fantastic.

wonderful, 07 Jul 2008
Highly recommended, 06 Nov 2008
Absolutely amazing. , 19 Nov 2008

Truly Superb Self Help Book - buy it., 15 Nov 2008
I have read many self help books recently and i dont have enough words to commend this particular book.
Oustanding the 'Bible' of self-help manuals, 04 Oct 2008
When I first dipped into this book I did not think it was for me. There was too much 'loud' stuff. I could envisage 'group hugs' and the American way of doing things. It felt way too touchy-feely for me; however, I contined and was ultimately so pleased that I did. Robbins has such a way with writing and inspiring it is quite clear why he is the person he is today.
